Title: RGB vs. Component Mod
Post by: Azzurri on 09/03/2014, 02:00 PM
I'm very new when it comes to the PCE, but from what I've read and watched people seem to go for the RGB mod and connect it to the XRGB Mini Framemeister.

Is there any reason to go with the component mod over the RGB?  I know you need SCART cables, but they're pretty easy to buy for cheap off of Ebay.

Are there any advantages from either or?  Main differences?

The thing is I want to run it the console to my PC monitor, but it only has HDMI, which is why I was going for the RGB and have it go through a Framemeister.

Are there any alternatives?

Thanks a lot fellas!

I don't have a xrgb mini and my HDTV takes component video and supports 240p,  thus the component video mod is more logically for me.

Iam using the RGB mod with a customized cinch to scart cable, since I use a CRT TV for gaming. So no need for a component mod....but I might need it one day when I have to switch to LCD/LED.

Most of the scalers and mods for retro gaming are geared towards RGB.

Test it by putting the yellow composite cable from your system into the green component jack. IF you get a black and white picture then your TV will accept the component 240p signal.

I have a cheap Scart to HDMI converter which works fine. There is some slight motion blur on 240p images, but I can live with it. I have a CRT when I want perfection!

RGB is the native image of the system. The Rgb mod just allows you to get that signal out of your system. A component mod would just be a chip that converts rgb into the NTSC "component" standard. You can buy a box that converts euro scart(rgb) to component just like the HDMI one pictured above. The advantage in doing that is that other systems can do the same thing with just a cable (SNES, Genesis, master system)
