I'm not going to pretend I knew at least the name of the developer, but damn he will be missed, judging by the quality of his work.

Damn that's sad, how old was he? Maybe 50's?

Fun Fact: When making Lode Runner, he used some of the kids in his neighborhood to make free levels for him. ;)

Wow, I don't know what to say. I never played much of Lode Runner, but I played enough to know it was an excellent game. Even so, I am reminded of the fact that I'm beginning to reach the age where life starts to give less, and take away more.

Good-bye, Doug Smith. I hope you are in a world with lots of gold and none of the monsters...

Damn, I loved Lode Runner on Apple ][.

LODE RUNNER is a PURE, PERFECT FORMULA for action-puzzle-platformer (whatever the hell the genre is) games, as far as I am concerned.

It still plays splendidly today.

Precise, responsive controls are crucial--plus, the little guy could run fast.

Thanks for posting, Arkhan.  :pcgs:

LODE RUNNER, you are equipped with a special lazer gun that can only destroy brick floors. Good luck.

Wow...  Lode Runner was one of the first PC games I remember playing a ton of (back when my Dad had an 8088!). I even picked up the PCE version for nostalgia's sake (though I still need to get the Bomberman version someday).  RIP, Douglas.

I was playing the pc-engine version today.  It brought back memories of the Apple ][ version of it we had at school.  It was an incentive to do well at the educational software we had in class.  If we did well and had time we could play some Lode Runner.  Sad news to hear.  It is like what Arjak said.

Lode Runner is definitely a game where it may seem like it's dumb at first, but really, once you get going, it becomes one of the funnest games ever.

Never played the original. Tried the PCE version and enjoyed it. The Legend Returns, that was a game I put many, many hours of play and creation into. Worthy follow up to the original.

I remember putting some major time in on Load Runner on the C64 in the mid '80s. Then bought the NES version and kicking it to the curb shortly after.

Really sad. Retro Gamer mag did a whole spread on the guy last year. He'll be missed.

I remember playing the NES version at my aunt's house when I was a kid. I was probably the only person in the whole house who appreciated the game's high pitched music.
