So i just sent off a perfectly working...but all original capped Duo to Chop5 for recapping. It feels a little weird to do something like this as a preventative step, but everything I've read seems to indicate that eventually they all leak. So I figured It'd be worthwhile to nip that in the bud.
I'm sure he'll do a great job making sure everything is in order, but is there anything else I should be having done while the hoods off? I'm pretty sure the laser isn't worn out as the system has very little play time on it (although i guess it probably needs new grease).
Speaking of NEC stuff, is there anything long-term I should be looking out for with the PC-FX? I'd imagine it's also getting a little long in the tooth hardware wise and i have one in a box somewhere.
By the way nice to be on the forums...I'm slowly pulling out my old hardware in a bit of nostalgia. Turbo Duo was at the top of the list to get back into tip-top shape.
Welcome aboard!
Good call on the recap. As for anything else needed, have chops clean it, reapply the KY, and stress test for cd reading issues, which I believe he does as a matter of course anyway.
For the PC-FX, I've not heard of any typical problems. All caps go bad eventually and blazing cd lazers won't last forever, but I wouldn't worry about it if it currently works okay.
You're in good hands with chop. He's one of my go to guys when I get backed up.
on the FX, same cap issues as the duo, just newer
the lasers fail, but thats not an age thing

Yep, I had a FX that went to crap. BlueBMW had to recap it for me, as the sound was doing exactly like the black Duos would do when the caps crapped out.

region mod & s-video come to mind as worthy additions.
Chop doesn't do mods to my knowledge...which is fine, I don't want anything "extra" done to the system. I think I'd rather get one of those converter cards if i ever have the hankering to play imports.
