Title: Super Famicom shooters, whats left to get?
Post by: PCEngineHell on 12/29/2014, 10:10 PM
So far I have Chatting Parodius, Gokujou Parodius, Super R-Type, Gradius III, Raiden, Area 88, Pop n' Twinbee, Cotton, and Darius Twin. The ones I know of out there to maybe get still are Sonic Wings, the first Parodius released on SFC, Super Nova, Macross, Super Aleste, and Axelay. I know some like it, but I don't care to get Phalanx. Anyway, is there any other good shooters out there to get besides what I listed?

Ahh you know I am glad you mentioned that. I have seen that game pop up on ebay a lot, and from the name I just assumed it was some kind of platformer.

This one is okay. Not nearly as good as Galaga 88,
but I was pleased when I learned about it.

Gradius III is my favorite snes shooter.

Do you have R-Type III professor? It's apparently the best r-type.
I could never beat any of them though, depends how good you are.

Prof: you might like Firepower 2000 (3000? 4000?) because it has an interesting vibe to it (like it was birthed on a computer, then ported to a console).

At least try it via emulation. :)

Parodius is fun. Even if you already own the arcade-perfect PS1/SAT Deluxe pack version, the SNES version will offer you some bonus content.

I usually like R-Type, and thus had to have R-Type III. But eventually I found this game to be kind of a letdown. The visuals are great and pretty smooth for SNES standards, the music is so nice (especially the opening sequence and level 1), but what comes after the first level is an unfair hard unplayable mess... at least to me, since I suck at shooters where you have no "EASY MODE" option. Really, even the original R-Type and R-Type II were easier for me on normal difficuilty than part III. I had to cheat in III by using the Retrode and playing in an emulator with quicksaves, to regain some fun for the money I spent on the cartridge. My opinion? III is highly overrated.

That said, the only R-Type I've ever beaten was Super R-Type on easy and novice modes. :/

I can recommend Axelay. The Mode 7 graphics for the vertical levels feel awfully lot like being conveyor belts, but they are still somewhat impressive. The collision detection in the vertical levels  need some time to get used to, but in the horizontal levels it is just fine. Good music, good weapon system.

Even though I'm a big fan of Macross, I can only think of Scrambled Valkyrie being a B-movie shooter. The graphics are OK (sometimes with cool effects), the level design is OK, the power up system is OK, but the music is horrible in some parts. Watch a longplay of some stages and you will know what I'm trying to say. Most bosses aren't taken from the movie or TV series, sadly.

Yeah R-Type 3 is one I am not a fan of. I owned it years back and just didn't enjoy it. Something about it and R-Type Leo just don't do it for me at all. I love R-Type 1-2 and Super R-Type though. Firepower 2k. Looking at video of it now it looks like an overhead Silkworm. Interesting....

BioMetal and Super Earth Defense Force both look good, so I am adding them to my watch list along with Firepower 2k. Will probably pick them up soon. Also saw one called Blazeon that I may grab too.

While not traditional shooters.... I liked all of the Super Scope games.  Battleclash and Metal Combat are a good romp, Yoshis Safari is easy but fun.  The super scope six pack in is loads of fun too.

I actually prefer the SFC Bio Metal without the 2 Unlimited soundtrack.

There's a GameSack episode on SNES shooters... I guess you've already seen it, but I think it fits well in this thread:

Imperium is a neat little MUSHA clone on the SNES. It even sorta rips off MUSHA's stage one music theme.

You probably already know UN Squadron but I have to mention it just because it has such a wonderful atmosphere. It has that early SNES vibe similar to Pilotwings that I love so much.

Got it, at least got the SFC release of it, Area 88. :)

Ah yes it does appear that you did mention Area 88. Me bad.

To make up for that oversight I will recommend that you stay far far away from Xardion. It's one stinky shewty. shoo-we!

Ended up finding Axelay for a nice price (along with Battle Master). Will have to come out of Japan, so it will be awhile before it gets here.

Axelay.  Very cool shooter with a lot of mode 7 effects.

EDIT:  Should have read that post above mine!

There's Thunder Spirits, which I still believe is worth $5 even with the horrendous slowdown.

Spriggan Powered looks nice...and that's about it.  Still, gotta love them pretendered graphics.

Do try to get ye a copy of Super Nova/Darius Force, as the bosses are really quite unique among Darius games & it's not an expensive game.

There aren't a lot of Mode 7 effects in Axelay. I think the level 2 boss has some mode 7 (first side-scrolling stage) but that's it if I recall.

Yeah, the conveyer belt scrolling bits are often mistaken for "mode 7" but in fact it's an effect that can be produced by both the Genesis and PCE, if I'm not mistaken.  It can be seen in Sonic 3D Blast...

Pocky & Rocky 1-2 (US versions are at stupid prices)
Cotton 100% (not as good as the other cottons but decent)
BlaZeon that you mentioned is a good port of the arcade game, but it is a slow moving shooter
Uchū no Kishi: Tekkaman Blade (sort of a different side scrolling shooter with vs fighing) Probably shouldn't be in this list
Strike Gunner STG (decent with 2 players)
Caravan Shooting Collection (if you fancy nes ports on an snes)
Acrobat Mission (port of Taito's arcade game)
