I say, wear white. That way, you don't have to bother inspecting anythign that looks like a rat turd on your floor... you'll know it is a rat turd because your fucking toes won't be dropping them all over the place.
I wear different colored socks to go with my different colored pants, or just white if they're jeans. When it's nice out and I'm not at work, I go sockless in the jerusalem cruisers.

Sadly, the rat turds get everywhere. In between toes. White rugs in bathroom.
I have tried something new, but most folks would not approve: no socks in the winter, with my "loafers". I love the cool feeling in the icy weather.
Black socks always. Or gray. My winter socks are gray or a nice fuzzy blue.
But I don't wear white socks. I like picking the rat turds from between my toes.
i dont own any white socks.
blue or dark brown with dark brown pants.
black socks with black or gray pants.
black or gray socks with jeans.
low ankle profile black or gray socks with shorts.
NONE with any kind of sandal.
also...need to coordinate properly depending on the dominate color of the shoes you have on.
(light gray anklers if you are a squib and wear white sneakers)
do NOT ever wear black shoes with brown or blues pants (jeans excluded).
do NOT ever wear brown shoes with dark gray or black pants
low cut black socks, and tall black ones in the cold. i work on cars and white is not cool with grease.
Black socks only. So I don't have to worry about matching sock pairs or stains.
The only coloured socks I've got are dedicated for running. They come even in left and right handed (footed???) variations, which adds to the confusion. But they fit just soooo snugly, that I could cry tears of pure joy everytime I put them on.

I used to always wear regular ol white socks at work. My shoes were always black work shoes and I had dark blue work pants. Well I would always walk really fast at work in order to get things done quicker. One day one of the salesmen (I worked at a car dealer as a technician) saw me rollin by and said "hey! Slow down man, your socks are showing!" So after that I wore blue socks so they wouldn't show as much when I was walking fast.... True story!

I can relate, kinda—when I do stuff in front of my boss(es), I make sure not to flash any ankle skin. I just don't think they would approve of my new foray into sockless winters.

Black socks 4 days of the week for work. White socks on Fridays because I can wear jeans to work on Fridays. If it is warm out, then no socks at home on the weekends, unless I'm working on a car or push mowing part of the yard. Otherwise it's sockless with flip flops. If it is cold, then white socks.

I stopped wearing matching socks over 20 years ago. I'm currently wearing one green and one orange sock, but I don't own any all-white or all-black socks. They're mostly solid colored spanning all the colors of the rainbow, but I did for Christmas get a pair of fast food socks and a pair of socks with mustaches all over them. :)

Although all my socks are black, I only have a matching pair the first time I wear them (out of the package).
Then, I literally grab two at random.
It's lots of fun when I don't grab a crusty old one with a soft, fresh new one.

And to answer the question, mostly business socks (https://youtu.be/AqZcYPEszN8&t=2m12s), but if I'm lounging around the house in the winter or going for a run (or needing for some reason to wear my tennis shoes) then I wear white low cut socks.
Black socks, always. White socks and business attire (or generally any type of pants) make you look like a chode.
