We all know the Obey version of Ys III runs like dog shit struggling uphill in the cold of winter, and other versions seems to run without this issue, is that something that can be fixed somehow?
I am only asking, because I had a dream it happened...
So, what say you?
Edit: D'oh meant for this in the dev section, oh well
My guess, is that it'd have to be built from scratch. If someone had the source code for Legend of Xanadu, that'd probably be a great base code for redoing Ys 3.
The hardware could do a version with 60fps scrolling no problem. There's nothing you can do about the existing version using dynamic tiles from the MSX version for most of the scrolling though.
Just whip up a new version from the ground up and please upgrade the pixelart while you're at it, since it also is not optimal.

Yup. In addition to upgrading the graphics, I know most folks would love an alternate soundtrack (remix?) in addition to the standard one.
Actually, two alternative soundtracks (remixes + Bhangra versions), plus the original PCE soundtrack would be even BETTER.
:)
I smell a project...

I know nothing of the sort. Sure it could be better, but it's hardly unplayable.

Comparable to most other versions, it's sadly the inferior running version, not to say it's not playable, just jarring...
I'll take not so great scrolling over the trainwreck tunes of the SNES any day.

"Choppy" scrolling: MSX, PC-88, PC-98, PCE (less than those to the left)
"Smooth" parallax: MD, SNES, X68k
No in-game parallax: Famicom
Looks like "most" are choppy.
PCE version still plays better than SNES and some prefer the gameplay to Genesis.

You know, I had halfway written a post in defense of the snes version's soundtrack but then I went and listened to it again on youtube and my memory had been playing some tricks on me. The way I recalled it (having not heard it for probably 20 years or so when I rented it out of curiosity) I thought that even though it was a bit midi-ish or whatever the music was good enough to stand on its own.
Searing Struggle is one of my favorite song from that console generation and listening to the snes version of that was outright painful. My god.
This really is bad! Wow. I, uh, well, I won't ever try to defend this version of the soundtrack again. After listening to the Ys 3 soundtrack I checked out the snes version of Ys 4 and it sounded much better to say the least. The soundtrack to Ys 5 was alright as well, probably the best of the 3 games on snes.

I don't remember the soundtrack for SNES Ys III, so now I'm going to have to listen to it, as well, for comparison.
And, while I am at it, I'll re-listen to the Genesis version as well (I remember a few of the songs, at least).

Yarr, the other two are pretty good. It's not that the SNES wasn't capable, it's that whoever did those tunes dropped the ball. Hard.
If you want good Ys III chip tunes, listen to the Famicom version.

I will have to compare all the Ys III tunes.
You know, even though the background scrolling is janky, the rest of the game plays perfectly well. As well as any of the other renditions, anyway.

I like the X68k version.

Damn.
Quote from: Dicer on 02/13/2015, 11:24 PMSo, what say you?
I think it'd be a wasted effort considering we already have other good non scrolling versions (genesis)
But the music isn't nearly as good(Genesis). Still better than the snes audio though.
Honestly the scrolling doesn't bother me much except for in the main town. It's 10 times worse there for whatever reason. In the rest of the game it isn't as choppy. Honestly I think the main town would have been better off just having no scrolling at all than how it is.
My favourite town music is the mega drive version but when I want to get pumped I listen to the PCE intro music. So good.

I prefer the genesis sound - ym2612 va6 game too strong
Never tried the genny version. Gonna have to give it a go.

Word. It's my favorite Ys III next to the x68000.
Yea all graphics and gameplay mechanics aside, IMHO, TG16 and PCE ver of this game by far have the most kickass soundtrack of any other release
Genesis version has great scolling and better audio over the Snes version. But the Genesis colors just look washed out compared to the Turbo.

I mean the animated tile background layer scrolling. I don't mean ordinary level scrolling. I thought the regular side-to-side was a LITTLE less smooth than the SNES or Genny, but not significantly so, and I felt the character otherwise controlled just as well. In fact, I think I preferred the attack hit detection to the SNES version, which is the only other version I played extensively. Between the SNES and CD versions, I preferred the CD version.
Starting to think how this would translate to a view like the other Ys games, hrmmm

That's what I was saying, Ys III was made from the ground up around with those integers in mind. The 100% smooth scrolling games are the one which had to find a compromise to make the gameplay work.

It would strike me as odd if the entire game flow were based around simply making some dynamic tiles work properly. Game design typically goes the other way.

fixed that for you.
Anyway, the scrolling is fine. People have this misconception that smooth scrolling is some sort of required thing. The parallax in Ys III is fine. The sprites are running smooth. Everything is playable.
The game plays good. The choppy ones play good too.
The MSX2 one is pretty awesome, for example. I'd say overall, the MSX2 and PCE ones are the better versions to play. The MD one might be if Adol wasn't retarded looking.
To say the game runs like shit makes me wonder if you even played it, as the scrolling that people complain about isn't even present for large portions of the game.

No no no no....not like that
I mean make it just like Ys I II and IV same style not that isometric nonsense.
I would've preferred they maintained the overhead format as Ys Book I & II and what they returned to in Ys IV, but because I was treated to one of the greatest soundtracks in videogame history, everything else was forgivable, even the bad dubbing.

Man, that miner starting at 1:07 is incredibly robotic! However, I've always thought Mayor Grady was 1 or maybe the only relatively decent actor, he usually sounds fairly natural IMO.

I made that up, the scrolling is fine 10% of the time (some stages are smooth) and Arkhan has 10% of a penis.
Also, if anyone re-makes this game and so much as TOUCHES any of the voice acting, I will say bad things about you. I love the voice acting; it is consistent with the english voice acting in Ys IV.
I was thinking more Last Alert/Final Zone levels...
