Title: Hu feels sticky and the protector has a strong plastic smell
Post by: Bekic on 02/15/2015, 01:58 PM
It happened after opening a brand new game. Is that all good or should i be worried? The back of the card also has these "prints" on the back with a texture different from the actual plastic.

Possibly it was exposed to alot of heat. Does the game still work?

I would toss the sleeve and wash the HuCard with dish soap and a sponge. Make sure to thoroughly rinse and immediately towel dry it afterward.

Yes it works fine. I couldn't really say if it was exposed to heat though or anything else.

BT's advice works like a charm.

Comrade, we are just goofing around.

You really need to toss the sleeve, though.

There is a thread (maybe someone will link to it) where a few folks have reported the exact same issue as you: sleeves deteriorating, leaving a residue on HuCARD, sometimes even ruining the print on the HuCARD.

HOWEVER, I have never heard anyone reporting that the HuCARD is inoperable as a result of this residue.

I don't think all sleeves are going to become gooey...I have not experienced any problems yet (and I have a many NA and JP titles).

Sticky residue huh? You didn't happen to buy it from Nulltard did you? If so, add clorox to the cleaning regimen.

Don't forget to use a cotton swab with alcohol to clean the interior corners of the tray.

yep this seems to work, i think the detergent neutralizes any acids left on the cards. same goes for damage from storing in a business card holder.

I've never seen it on brand new games right out of the box (or later on games that were bought new), but I've had it on games bought used.  You could try cleaning up the sleeve, but I'd just chuck it and replace it with one of seymouronions.

Just to be clear, I wasn't joking and have been washing HuCards and TurboChips in a sink for 25 years with only positive results.

My Gamola speed sleeve was starting to turn (was a sealed copy) must be something in the materials used to make certain sleeves...

Absolutely. A combination of...

materials + exposure to heat/humidity + LOVE (or lack thereof) = sticky factor.

I would use 90% rubbing alcohol to clean it. Cuts grime and evaporates almost instantly.

So would you guys say it's inevitable?

No.

However, as my prior posts summarizes, whether or not a HuCARD sleeve will deteriorate into sticky goo is combination of...

STICKY FACTOR = (1) materials (not all sleeves are exact same material, from same manufacturer, from same lot) + (2) exposure to heat/humidity/other elements + (3) LOVE (or lack thereof)

I would not be surprised if other sleeves become stiff/dusty/cloudy/etc.

SOFT, MALLEABLE PLASTICS/VINYLS do not age as nicely as hard plastics...

AT LEAST THIS ISN'T FOAM we are dealing with. FOAM DETERIORATES QUICKLY AND HORRIBLY compared to other materials.

:)

I've had a lot of success cleaning sleeves with a stripped down retr0brite:

Hydrogen Peroxide (stronger is better, but the pharmacy stuff works ok)
Oxyclean Powder
Glass container (I use a 10 gallon fish tank)
Bright sunlight/UV (in warm weather is best)

Let them soak all day.
Use another glass tray to hold them under the solution (bubbles form and they will float otherwise)

you can wash them a little with soap and water first if they are heavily soiled.

Rinse with water and dry completely (towel and air dry for several days) before putting the huey back in (it's hard to get all the water out of the pocket with just a towel, so don't skip the air dry step.

These were brown before the process.  Also, it wont clean ink, as you can see.
