Title: Awesome music from average or crappy games?
Post by: PukeSter on 04/04/2015, 09:46 AM
I'll start.

Mr. Nutz was a pretty generic platformer on the SNES. However, the Gameboy Color version (which I grew up with) has some pretty good music.

This is one of the best title screen themes I've ever heard.

Black Belt on the Master System is pretty similar to Spartan X and Vigilante. I like it but never beat the 4th boss. The Boss theme is incredible though. Keep in mind the music is totally different in the Hokuto no Ken version.

Verytex and Midnight Resistance on the genesis both have spectacular music, and those are pretty average games.

Jinmu Densho on the PCE has pretty inspired tunes.  I think the sound engine is messed up (much like the rest of that game) where if you let the songs play long enough, the percussion goes off-sync with the rest of the music.

I will edit this post when I think of more.

NBA All Star Challenge on SNES is an odd one-

Meh sports title, but it's composed by the same team that did Shadowrun for the SNES, so if you loved that one (Which I do!), you'll really like this one.

I always liked the Skate or Die 2 (NES) music, from the opening theme with the heavy guitar riff and digitized vocals to the awesome half-pipe music!

The actual story line game totally sucked, I always remember being frustrated by the controls.

Super Hydlide on the Sega Genesis was notoriously bad, but the soundtrack was varied and phenomenal.

Notoriously bad by people who were too stupid to read the manual and play the game, you mean.

Shadow of the Beast is an average game with awesome tunes.

Shadow of the Beast. I love the way the soundtrack sounds on all platforms (I've played a bunch of them), but the PCE Red Book really is nice.

:)

I loved the game and it's realistic day/night, weight and food elements.
It's just that the graphics were so horribly bad and it was quite difficult to figure out what to do/where to go in order to progress.  Thank god there was a thorough walkthrough in one of the Genesis game mags of the day.

Gambit's theme is my favorite.  They are all good.  The game not so much.  Not terrible.  The music though is still some of the best on the SNES.  Thank you Tim and Geof Follin.

That's because it's an enhanced port of a PC-98/MSX game.  It was made and released before the Genesis even came out.

Sorry, musical tastes are so subjective...

RAYXANBER (FM-TOWNS)

Gorgeous, indulgent, sultry synths. HOLY CRAP THIS IS EXQUISITE for folks who love this sort of thing.

VALIS II:

JIM POWER (such greatness...I can't remember if you-know-who* stole** this tune from somewhere else, but it doesn't matter because this song is a fave):

*  Chris Huelsbeck
** "was inspired by"

SLIME WORLD:

Sadly, it's a short tune. Huelsbeck basically does a FREESTYLE VALIS II track and that's why I love it so much. I love Valis II Red Book. I love freestyle.

The first two that popped into my head where Midnight Resistance and Shadow of the Beast....got beat to the punch.

Viewpoint, great music, throw the controller and kick the cat level of aggravating gameplay.

Kid Chameleon.  Super repetitive and really 80s but its got some rockin tunes.

Also, Light Crusader.  The music is superb, but the gameplay is bland.

I got the Genesis version because I found it for $10 at a used book store & it seemed like a good deal, and I like shooters.  I've yet to actually play it, though.  I'm waiting til I over clock my genesis.  I didn't think the music in that port was super great, though.

Everyone I meet my age that's played Kid Chameleon just showers it with praise, but I indeed find it to be mediocre.

Light Crusader, on the other hand, I thoroughly enjoy...except for the fact that the puzzles reset when you leave a room.  Very obnoxious.

I love both KC and LC, but I know they aren't for everyone.  I did a YT playthough of Crusader a few years ago, with a little more polish it could have been awesome.
