So after working a crazy long grave, I wasn't tired so I picked up on an old favourite see I could roll over the score. Three hours later this what happened:

It's one of the key features of the gameplay that makes it so much fun and was so disappointing in the sequels when it was capped too low.
Anyway, the most efficient way to max out your score is in this forum's high score thread. Just get beneath a bird in the bouncy cloud area, let the game bounce you into it until it stops giving poits, grab the 1up and jump in a pit to your death. Repeat.

I remember doing it as a kid to earn 1ups easier but then I wanted to go all the way and see what happens.

That's a good strategy but I may have been accused of excessive leaching and my score would have been DQ'ed.
