For $500 couldn't I just use all original parts, mod it, and end up with the same product. In fact, wouldn't I save money that way?

Nope, rather use the $500 to get a Neo Geo AES or a decent laptop.

it does look cool and the famicom compatibility is nice but 500? no thanks.
