Title: PCE 30 Years Book (CANCELLED)
Post by: _Paul on 10/31/2015, 05:16 AM
/ruclk6.png

In 2017, the PC Engine will be 30 years old. To celebrate this event, I hope to gather stories, photos and memories of the PC Engine and/or TurboGrafx-16 from the community and compile them into a free book that anyone can view online or download and print.

This book will be a community project, written by us, for us.

I'm looking for virtually anything you have to say about the PC Engine, which can include:
When you first saw a PCE/TG.
General memories, events (serious, funny, happy or sad) concerning the PCE/TG.
Stories about the PCE/TG (real or fictional is OK!)
PCE/TG related artwork you want to share.
Photos of you, your setup, you playing, or just being silly with your PCE/TG.
Anything else PCE/TG related that you can think of!

You can send any content or enquiries to me at paul[at]pcengine.co.uk or message me on the forums here (If you have large/many images then I suggest using a service such as wetransfer.com)

If you are contributing, when you send information, please let me know the name or handle which you would like to be credited as and a photo of you (or something to represent yourself) that I can use as an avatar of sorts with your comments.

LET'S MAKE THIS AN EPIC BOOK WORTHY OF THE PCE!

LOL.  Man Bernie, it's never going away.  This is awesome paul.  Now do you have a Tatsujin to english translator if he is going to add anything?  Probably not though.  FB has sucked the life out of him.

Will definitely be sending something about the repair threads and walkthroughs, and the Folklore that the community has created, through memes, modifications, raffles, chat, etc.

I can either do an academic analysis of these things, or make it totally informal. Maybe a bit of both.

u decise

Anything and everything is good. A lot of the book would be informal, almost like a collection of forum posts showing a range of opinions and experiences, so anything deeper would also provide a welcome variety.

Off topic but this is the kind of thing I would be interested in. I could easily translate from French to English. Where can I find a pdf or physical version of this book?

Eh, maybe a pamphlet.  I do have a lot of mundane(to the public) memories from growing up with the Turbob aside from the few stories of interaction with TTI & WD.  Even those however, aren't gonna be 100% accurate memories, wish I recorded it all!

That depends on what people contribute.

Basically, my view of the book is quite casual - almost like a series of printed forum posts where people can say what they like, as long as it relates to the PCE. I'd like the focus to be on personal writings or creations, so although there is room for 'A History of <something>' I think it would be nice if the bulk of it consists of personal stories, feelings about the system and games etc.

But I'm not going to try to steer this too much in any direction. Think of it as something we are all making as a tribute to the PC Engine. I'm just here to edit it and slap it all together.

I might submit some stuff particularly some art stuff if I can get off my lazy ass during this winter.

Is there a deadline for submitting work?

I'm starting to play around with ideas for the layout of the book. I'm thinking of arranging it sort of like instant messages or forum posts to keep it informal.

I think that is a great format to use.

Why?

Because I think that it fits perfectly with "community"... Especially if I just go back and recycle some old posts.

Ha!

Also, I want my brothers to do something. At least one of them should be able to get something finished by 2017.

:)

Awesome.  I've had the first few submissions in now, but I still need YOURS. Yes YOU, the one reading this now.

Send, photos, pictures, drawings or write about your PCE TG memories.

Or even fan fiction (keep it clean)!

Paul,  This is incredibly cool!!  I would love to contribute something!  How are the submissions so far?  More than enough?  Not enough?  Just right?

What kind of timetable are you looking at for getting these in?

I'm kind of strapped for time with other things (life, projects), but would LOVE to contribute and will try in my spare time.  If it takes me a few months to submit something will I be too late?

Thank you,

Never enough submissions!

Then, even if you have submissions, there might be varying levels of "quality"...

That sort of thing...

Start today and maybe you won't end up doing something the night before the deadline.

I've seen this thread a while now and my thought was submitting something around say the Ys IV translation project. Go through some history on its origins, the ups/downs, setbacks, glorious progress, heck, a lot of material I already wrote in the Ys IV ReadMe, just would need to be summarized, updated further for the dubbing aspect and what not. Problem is I dunno how fast you're moving and I'm not quite in the mood for something like this just yet... :/
Title: Re: PCE 30 Years Book - a community project
Post by: _Paul on 02/18/2016, 02:16 PM
My current plan would be to release it on the 30th October 2017, the PCE's birthday.

That gives us lots and lots of time to prepare. I will try to keep pushing things regularly though because it's easy for people to forget and then months go by.

I have only a few submissions so far. I would like a lot more because I hop this can be a kind of document that the community can look back on in a few years and be able to read people's memories and experiences without having to fish around in old forums.

Anyway, I'll say the deadline is...May 2017?

Bump to remind people of this project.

I'm going to say a primary deadline for this is the end of October this year. At that stage I can see if there is enough content to be worth continuing. If there is, then I'll take more over the few months after to fill things out.

DEADLINE OCTOBER!

Get writing / drawing / photographing or whatever now!

I've had a few submissions, but not enough yet to make this a full project. What I get in before the deadline will help determine how far this project goes and whether it's going to be a full online and printed book, or just a few pages in a PDF.

AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, this was literally the next thread in the queue.
