We tried as a forum to collectively beat every licensed U.S. game released for the TurboGrafx-16 system in 2016. We failed. ](*,)
Now, we are simply trying to collectively beat them in 2016-2017.
Rules
1. Post the games which you have beaten in this thread.
2. Game must be beaten on any difficulty level which 'completes' the game and credits scroll (if the game does that). (So 'Breeze' on Magical Chase won't cut it, because it is not the complete game, and no credits scroll.
3. A game clear screenshot must be posted for your clear to count, but if you absolutely missed getting the pic, you may substitute a picture of your gaming setup with the game playing on the screen.
4. Emulators may be used, but no save states/frame skips/cheats are allowed.
5. The PC Engine version of the game may be beaten in its place if the games are basically the same (i.e. Ninja Spirit – okay, Sinestron/Violent Soldier – not okay)
6. Continues and/or passwords are fine, but no codes allowed which are not given to you by the game itself or its instruction manual.
7. Game must be beaten in its entirety in the calendar year of 2016. No old 99% saves may be used.
8. If a game has no ending and just repeats the same stages, then you may consider it beaten once you get to that point.
9. If a game has no ending but just continues racking up points (i.e. Alien Crush), then you may consider it beaten once you beat the in-game high score or you max out the score (i.e. all 9's in the score).
10. Gamers may participate to beat longer games if it is feasible and desired (i.e. Boxyboy – one could beat the first 125 levels and give the password to another who could beat the final 125 levels).
11. Games to clear may not be reserved. Whoever beats it first and posts their pic gets the credit.
12. If anyone feels that a game was missed or a game is unbeatable and/or should have an alternate clear condition, please post your thoughts.

Couldn't resist a quick run through New Adventure Island after I saw this thread! :]
Played the PCE version but I've beaten both and the only difference I've ever noticed is the title screen.

Well the crush games will be no easy task, but I could probably knock out a few in the next few days like Fantasy Zone, Bonks, and Gate of Thunder. Cool thread, I saw one from a few years ago and always wanted to start this again.
Great idea! :)
I would like to make one small addendum to the rules:
13. You pledge to listen to the tunes from Timeball /Blodia at least twice in 2016. You may not like the game, but at least give the (very short!) soundtrack a chance. Thank you.

My favorite TurboGrafx-16 game! There is no "The End" screen in Darkwing Duck but here are a few terrible quality pics I snapped after I beat the game earlier.

Still one of my favorites.

Psychosis 1 Life clear, only takes 15 minutes :)
Final score: 299,000, but I'm trying Loop 2 right now
General tip for anyone, use only the Wave shot
Edit: got to 2-4

I think this will be done by the end of next week lol. But yeah man, rock those games out, so much fun. :)

If we finish all of the licensed TG-16 games, then I'll add the unlicensed and then perhaps open up the PC Engine floodgates to see how many total we can beat.

Anything's possible but one of the rule was:
QuoteEmulators may be used, but no save states/frame skips/cheats are allowed.
I'm also guessing hacked CD or rom does not count as well? There's a list of cheat on Krikzz forum for hacking ROM and a few CDs such as unlimited lives, invincibility, etc.
If the above did finish Exile 2 without cheating or reusing old save in a short time, then wow!!
Fantasy Zone 1cc!
This was the first PCE game I ever played so I have a huge soft spot for it :)

Camp California was one of my favorite games back in the day. I never lost my touch at that game, and I understand how to manipulate Byron so he platforms like a boss. Exile WP is the same deal. I spend the most time in the Spire Of Eternity, building up levels. The rest is just memory. I actually went through the Tower Of Souls without taking a single hit, and only took one hit on The Great Ark (from a floor wave attack) and one hit from the genie (charging attack, before his pattern settled). Turrican... same deal... favorite back in the day, I remember where everything is, which path to take, and when to use the buzzsaw or fire off special weapons.

This is a very fun and beautiful action game by Nowpro, the dev who brought you New Adventure Island, Bravoman and Jackie Chan.
Great job guys!
I was going to try to knock one out yesterday, but my boys and I ended up watching Robotech instead.
I'll update the thread this afternoon.
I'm trying as hard as possible to beat Space Harrier (without CNT), got as far as level 11 before the endless waves of static robot sprites got to all my 3 extra lives :(
Beat Bonk's Adventure today. I somehow managed to get myself killed as I hit King Drool for the last time:

lukester you machine! Here I was all excited to share my clear of Soldier Blade and I see you've long since slayed that this new year already. At this rate lukester will be able to finish the entire challenge himself.
We have cleared 22 of the 134 total goal!
Updated first posts.
Since GOJIRA ate my save in 2015, I might as well start playing a new campaign of Might and Magic 3 again for 2016. That's going to be fun.

Nice job everyone!
Someone said that NintendoAge was also doing this.
...That may be true but the library is huge and Captain Planet and the Planeteers is Mission: Impossible. Based on that 1 game alone I'm skeptical that they'll accomplish the goal.

Cheetahmen2. No one can finish it without using cheats. And Action 52? Does it have to be all 52 games to count this as one? Or would it count as 52 toward the final number?
And forgetting those funky pirated, xx-in-1 which is really 2 or 3 unique games and 10,000 various hacks, and other illegal hacks, there are something like 2000 Famicom titles that were never made available outside Japan and some of them are pretty darn hard.

Ah..., you were asking what qualifies as clearing/beating the game. #-o
Is there any way to make credits roll or to indicate that one has beaten the game? If not, then I'm fine with what you posted. One thing that I may do is try to keep track of how one clears/beats the games.

I made it to Chapter 3 in Dragon Slayer today, so if no one else is currently working on it I bet I can finish it within the next weekend or two (probably by next weekend, I'm pretty addicted to it right now).

I started this a few weeks ago. I agree it is a lot of fun. I liked how the battles go by pretty quickly. But I won't finish before you or anything, so go for it!
We are now up to 33 cleared!

...That said, for longer games such as Cratermaze, Might & Magic III, other RPGs, etc..., if you post in this thread that you are actively working on this game, there will likely be some 'gamer courtesy' in giving you a fair chance to clear the game. Just don't leave us hanging. :-"
I have been playing super star soldier for off and on last week. Last level boss rush is nasty. I'm having a list of issues with the game.
First if you die and have the continue where you left off power up. (Yellow Ship) its practically worthless because of how little damage your standard ship does you wont be powerful enough to defend against whatever just killed you.
-The Flamethrower (Yellow) power up can hide enemy bullets inside so if you blast a wave of enemies coming in and one gets a shot of at the edge of your shot, you can't see it and will get hit.
-The Flamethrower power up leaves the front of your ship exposed every other second
-While dodging enemies the power ups can get in your way (they come down in a waving pattern), so while maneuvering around to not get hit you may be forced into picking up the flamethrower power up.
-If you are already powered up with and a power up drop ship comes by if you don't shoot it to release power up, it will kamikaze at you across the screen and can kill you.
-Shooting the drop ship creates another problem as when it releases the power up it comes down in a wave formation. This is a big pain because unlike en enemy you can't shoot to clear it, you have to dodge it if you don't want it.
-Some power ups randomly appear (unless its point based, kill count based) so clearing certain parts seem dependent on if you can get that random ship to come for the extra power up.
-The first red power up does nothing? (Standard ship fire two straight lasers, 1 red power up nothing, 2 red power ups shots shoot front and back in a Y formation, 3 red, shots spread out all around the ship.
-The order of power ups can screw you over. If a wave of enemies come in, in addition to a wave of 3 drop ships. And I shoot the drop ships to avoid them going kamikaze on me. And a Red, Blue, Red Power ups wave down in that order. If I collect the first red nothing happens because thats how that one seems to work, then blue and get level 1 blue, try to avoid the next red but still touch it, it changes me to lvl1 useless red.
It seems that in order to clear the final stage you need the level 3 Green Power up, Blue is possible to a lesser degree. Forget Red because its useless if you get it. Yellow exposes the front and blinds your shots.
Then survive the first 3 minutes of enemies attacks while getting lucky enough that a random green appears to get lvl 3 then not get screwed over by power ups after that. Proceed to Clear a 3 boss rush, not dodge the 11 power ups that come down after the first rush cause none are green. Then defeat the last two bosses with allowing room for maybe 1 hit against you.
TL:DR SSS is a fairly difficult shooter and in the later levels becomes extremely and awkwardly difficult because of a flawed and punishing power up system. :-({|=
^the power up system is not flawed. You simply have preferences for what you like/don't like.
I was never a fan of the flamethrower when I first played the game. Later, though, I would get flamethrower to add variety to the game.
This is standard operating procedure for most games: best it first using preferred weapons, then have fun replaying the game with different weapon combinations (even the "lame" weapons can be fun when they become part of the challenge).
Well i think we'll have to disagree on the flawed parts but i should have been more specific. On a standard ship the first red power up should do something. It appears to do nothing. (Maybe someone more familar with the game can explain it) The shots of the flamethrower should not hide shots of the enemy. With it being a short to medium range weapon it permits close shots that will never be seen to hide inside and hit the player.
With power ups being a big criteria to a shooter having two of the four power up paths with issues has me giving this game a B instead of an A+. Overall though I've had a blast playing it.
The other things on my list are just challenging parts of gameplay because clearly they designed the drop ships to kamikaze.
The difficulty of using recovering after a death is forgivable too as that is an aspect of many other shooters.
The first red power up changes your shot from 4 double forward shot to 6 double forward shot. Its more noticeable when you jack the turbo switch up, which you should do when you have the red power up.
I use the green electric weapon from start to finish in Super Star Soldier. Total screen annihilation all the time, except behind you.

Ahh, the inability to see enemy bullets at close-range...that's the trade-off for using flamethrower. I like this (I believe it was intentional, to balance things out...otherwise, it might be too easy to put speed up to MAX and just zip around screen without abandon.)
Of course, I understand why you don't like it. You may never feel "comfortable" with flamethrower (leading to frustration)...
...I guess we can agree that flamethrower might not be universally loved :)
Personally, I love how it fans back and forth and is rather limited...
...but wait until you beat the game a few times. Then maybe give flamethrower another chance.

The RGB adapter has started to act up though. I first thought it was the laser, since I noticed the screen acting up whenever there was a non-action, cinema, moment while playing Ys I&II. Now I've noticed it on HuCards though. It doesn't happen when I use the original composite cable. You can see it here how it warps the text page in the funny "Take me now" screen:

Magical Chase
NecroPhile,
Congrats on beating the game!
How difficult would you say Magical Chase is compared to many of the other popular shooters on the TurboGrafx? For a game that garners so much attention due to its rarity and value, I know little about its play mechanics. I know Chris gave it a high score on Turbo Views, so with a copy up for auction now (currently sitting at $2,454 with a little over a day to go), I'm curious to hear other opinions about the game.
If it were a more common shooter, like Blazing Lasers, R-Type, Galaga, Super Star Soldier, or Gate of Thunder, do you think it would be considered one of the better shooters on the system?

Matt,
Why not get a turbo everdrive and play the game yourself? It is definitely not the best shooter on the system but it is a pretty decent game.
I've thought about getting an Everdrive. I love getting the original games, but I'm not a purist and if I ever pick up another NES, SNES, or Genesis will probably use Everdrives with them. I can see myself getting one for my PCE in the next year to play MC. That's a game that, financially, I know is just always going to be out of my reach. I would get one now, but my gaming time is severely restricted by my useless assignments I have to do for graduate school. ](*,)
Overall I'd say it's an above average shewty but not the best around. It looks great, sounds good, is cute as all get out, and offers a nice variety of weapons and enemies, but it feels kinda sloppy with a too big hit box, slow speed (even on 'feather' broom), and clunky star maiden controls.
I always get a little sad when a good game gets this super rare status. Thank goodness for the TED and emulation. At least people can play it still! It's not so bad when it's a kind of crappy game (i.e. Action 52) so you don't feel too much of an urge to own it. As for the game itself, it's probably not in my top 10 shooter list, but it is definitely a really nice looking, colorful game. The graphics are definitely one of it's strong points, and it's certainly worth a little bit of your time, just not $2000 of your money.
Quote from: johnnykonami on 02/08/2016, 01:58 PMI always get a little sad when a good game gets this super rare status.
This too saddens me, and probably saddens most of us here, johnnykonami. I hate thinking back on some of the fun games I remember renting and playing as a kid: Panic Restaurant comes to men, and seeing how expensive they have become due to a mix of rarity and demand. That's just the way the market goes, I suppose, but it is one of the reasons I quite collecting for (and sold off) my Nintendo collection.
Please excuse me, for I am new to the forum and guessing that Magical Chase and game prices have probably been discussed here to death, but I am at least glad that the 'Holy Grail' of NTSC TurboGrafx games is, at the very least, considered a quality game.
Compare that to Stadium Events - it's super rare, goes for an outlandish amount of money, and, as anyone who's played World Class Track Meet can tell you, is
not a great game.

I have a collection of maybe like 10 handpicked NES games, just stuff I loved. The Guardian Legend, Super Spy Hunter, Goonies II, a few others. I could probably buy about 30 more games and be totally happy with my NES library. Lots of great games, but lately I've been more interested in highly curated libraries rather than complete ones. Takes up less space and it's just what I want to play anyhow! I only discovered Panic Restaurant through emulation, but it is a really cool game. Another victim of collectardism, I guess. I think I played World Class Track Meet once as a kid, I knew someone who had the powerpad... no way I would pay a bunch of money for that one. In general, I'm not a huge fan of these types of games. I know my alias here is johnnykonami, but Track n' field is one of my least favorite Konami games. I did have some fun with Mach Breakers though. And I guess Summer Games on the C64.

It is a challenging game :)
You need a strategy for the entire race (parts) based on your driving preferences.
And...sometimes the terrain is hard to see at night (obstacles in road), so I play in a darkened room.

Definitely. The play time limit is an hour (I beat it in about 45 minutes), but meeting that meant replaying each level after learning the quickest way to the exit and restarting each level whenever I missed a jump, which happens all the time due to the crap controls.

Man your not kidding hate when night time sets in. I've been getting my butt kicked already. I've been playing with the different parts strategies. Made it about half way through the map/checkpoints last night.
^ Basically, if you know you wear out certain parts a lot, especially on paved surfaces, just make sure you have am enough in stock.
It's one of those things that you figure out as you make it further and further into the game...
Also, it goes without saying that you should try to build up as much "buffer" time as possible, since it is cumulative and acing the earlier tracks will buy some forgiveness on the later tracks.

A lot of people gives shit to Fighting Street but imagine the literal HELL it must have been to port the game so accurrately on a CDROM format in 1988, without any kind of cdr burners, a time when hard drives had 1/10 of the capacity of a full disc at best, rudimentary PC98 tools and expensive HD-array PCECD drive emulator, and a magnetic tape system to submit masters to the pressing factory. Even with all those difficulties they managed to do an almost 1:1 port, and many other great ports and original games up to the half of the 90's in that same rudimentary system.
The PCE, with hudson soft daring to do a CD system so early, has indeed earned the distinction of "King of The Hill".

Hahahahaha, I was contemplating posting a topless pic of me for the second one, but decided against it. ;)
I've never gotten remotely close, but don't you actually beat Alien/Devil Crush if you get a score that's straight 9s? Would that put her at around .5% of a complete game?

Nobody ever has. Our high score forum shows that. She has second highest score on forum at about 85 mil from a few years ago. The first page said the game would be beat if you could beat in-game high score.

Yeah, I wanted this challenge to be doable, so that's why I put that rule in. (Although if someone can max out the score with all 9's, then I'll be happy to note that. :-"

I maxed out the score once via a glitch. The ball was stuck in place bouncing between two point scoring bumpers for infinity. I think I took a picture and may have even posted it, but that was years ago and my memory sucks so bad I can even remember what Crush it was... 95% sure it was Alien.

Ha! That's awesome—just knowing the glitch exists. Collectively, pcefx must have logged a billion hours in those two games...so I don't think it is too common.

Double Dungeons
Dude, amazing. I actually thought about playing through this one again but just didn't have the time to do it. Crappy game but it does have it's merits as a huge time waster. :)
I wouldn't say it's a bad game, just bland and longer than necessary.

Quote from: guest on 03/17/2016, 09:49 AMDouble Dungeons
I never finished Double Dungeons. I enjoyed it a lot as a first person dungeon crawler but eventually found the fun wearing off and the game became too much of a chore as the dungeons got progressively larger. At one point I was mapping things with graph paper but I eventually just dropped it. Kudos on the completion.

I was actually really close to finishing this one and then I died. I got lazy and did not try and finish it again lol. I was at the level where it's a huge maze I think that is close to the end. It has been a while since I finished the game.
I was gonna do Legendary Axe after Sinistron.
But Sinistron won't yield.

Beating the Quest Mode counts as beating the Quest Mode.
Winning the Championship = beating the game in regular tournament mode.
Same for tennis.

I beat Cosmic Fantasy 2 in November of last year so no way I was going to play that again. It's a good game but man some of those battles drag out towards the end of the game. Especially the parts of the game when you only have one character. It takes ages to kill enemies lol.
I love RPGs and am typically patient with the classic ones but this one almost defeated me lol.

Yeah, I remember the last time I played all the way through it, back in the late 90s, I was so done with the game I sold it thinking I'd never want to play it again. But time heals all wounds and I started itching to give it another go a few years ago. I received it as a Secret Santa gift and have started it a couple of times since, but fizzled out before completing it. I think this time it's going to stick, though!

Well for PCEDaisakusen!, I would call Magical Dinosaur Tour cleared if I watched all of it, every screen, just the same as watching the visual collections, but for purposes of this challenge, it didn't seem to be one (a challenge) other than just finding the time to watch it, so that's why it is not counted.

Old_Rover, bless him, may be able to fix this, even if the game is simply released as "III" and "inspired" by Neutopia.
But don't hold your breath.
I wonder who even owns the rights to Neutopia these days, Konami? Maybe they don't care about it enough and someone could secure the rights cheaply. I remember hearing at one point Rover and some others were working on a 3rd installment but it was scrapped.

I did change it to "lever" control but I'm starting to think that besides the turbo button spring jumps the "button" control is better. But the problem really lies with the slippery controls and the momentum based mechanics. It's like Sonic's levels had vertical walls full of spikes every 10 feet. Qwertyuiopasdf.
I got used to the button controls in the arcade. I have no trouble controlling the Turbo version. Too many are just too used to how most games in any particular genre work.

Geez, I think maybe 3 weeks or so of playing it 1-3 hours a night. It wouldn't be too bad but there are some really confusing warp puzzles that are basically impossible without drawing a map. I said I would beat it without map drawing (because I'm lazy) but I ended up drawing maps because everything looks the same.
I hate games that force you to draw maps. It means that the level(s) are:
1- Too complex; or
2- Everything looks the same, no relevant landmarks or something as simple as different wall colors.
I beat M&M3 without maps... while the game is HUGE everything, especially the overworld, feels like a proper environment and dungeons are simple, with decent landmarking and good structure, so even more complex ones with dickish warps are doable. Also you can always use auxiliary spells like automap "wizard's eye", jump, etherealize, teleport, time distortion (teleport to dungeon entrance), and the Interdimensional Transport Box item.
This is very different from something like, for example, Double Dungeons and maybe, to a lesser extent, Order of the Griffon, imo.

This is very different from something like, for example, Double Dungeons and maybe, to a lesser extent, Order of the Griffon, imo.
I agree 100%. While this type of game typically is not my cup of tea, I was really enjoying it through the first few dungeons. Once I had to put pen to paper the only thing that got me through the game was knowing it would get crossed off the "beat in 2016" list. I also am a freak and will not even play another game until I complete what I started. Towards the end it became more of a chore than enjoyment to push through. At least I can say I beat it... I likely will never play it again but who knows. I will admit the later battles with tough enemies were fun because of the strategy involved. Very basic strategy based battling but, that was the highlight of the game imho.
Didn't intend to post here, but here's a toughie out of the way.
Super Star Soldier 1 life clear (you pretty much have to beat it in 1 continue, I hate the brain)

The green lightning is the best weapon, and you can attack both arms and the head when fully powered. The blue rings are okay since they have wide width.
It's easier to take out the arms first, so that way you have more room to dodge.
Other tip, I recommend missiles over shield.

I'm new to the Turbo and meant to beat this game a while back but been busy this summer. I wanted to chip in because a member here was very kind in selling me something Turbo related a while back.
Thx for the great community you regs provide.
Fun and challenging game, enjoyed the "garage/parts" aspect of the game.

Len Goodman, why have you denied us a photo?
It would be fun to try to track down all the voice actors in all the NA CD/SCD games.
I only looked up a handful, myself. I used to have a file with all (barely) any info I could find for a few games (not Shapeshifter).

I worked on The Addams Family over the weekend, but man is that game hard! I went ahead and used the extra lives code to see how far I could get and did finally beat it, but without using the code, I'm not sure if my skills are up to the challenge... :(
Bump cause we're running out of time.
P.S. fuck the final boss in Forgotten Worlds

Quote from: NecroPhile on 09/16/2016, 10:35 AMWhat's up with the corrupt graphics of the last boss and 'next'?
I played it through the SuperHuCard proof of concept disc, I guess the hack for the game to run off System Card RAM wasn't 100%. Looks like the game loads some graphics from the System Card ROM (the glitched bosses' tiles looks like kanji for me)
Still, good enough for a playthrough I guess.
Oh, shoot, I didn't know y'all were doing this! I love these kinds of projects. :)
I beat World Court Tennis a few weeks ago legitimately, but I didn't take a picture of the victory screen and I'm not sure how close my last password is to the final match (probably pretty close, though). If it's close, I can replay that match to get the ending again.
I was gonna start my Halloween gaming, but I think I'll tackle Sinistron again this weekend.
OK, here's the screenshot for World Court Tennis:

Only three months left...
...is this doable? There is maybe one game on here I can beat. Furthest I've ever got on Yo'Bro is the giant ants...
Quote from: Carparama on 10/09/2016, 02:00 PMOnly three months left...
...is this doable?
I don't know if any of the games left are insanely hard, have never been beaten by any known player, or have some other obscure barrier to victory. At Sega-16 -- where we're also trying to beat the full Genesis library, albeit not in a single year anymore -- there was one game that required that you watch a TV broadcast on a specific date (!!!) to get the final password, and no one had ever sussed that out until we had some help from an expert ROM hacker.
That said, quite a few games on that list are easy wins or popular games. Both Sherlock Holmes games are trivial with a walkthrough, and everyone raves about Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Nectaris/Military Madness. (Then again everyone raves about Master of Monsters, and we still haven't found someone to beat that at Sega-16.)
Sports games are tough; most people aren't willing to play those. I've tried out Davis Cup Tennis and Sonic Spike Volleyball over the weekend, but the former game is pretty rough and the latter infuriating.
But is it doable? Absolutely, with enough help. :) I'll do what I can, but I'm a newbie to the system so I can't promise much!
I just got through World Class Baseball. Hadn't played that in a decade or more, but I vaguely remembered my techniques for striking out opponents and neutralizing the running game. Having trouble uploading a picture, though: it says the upload folder is full.
I am also working on Military Madness (stage 11 right now), and will probably get through Beyond Shadowgate in the next month or so.
Looks like it's mostly just puzzle and sports games. I might go for Cosmic Fantasy 2, R-type, or Sinistron.
I've gotten to level 6 on R-type, but it is a difficult game. You just have to memorize the whole thing. I haven't played the other two, but they seem more interesting than anything else left.

It's forum file host thing is borked and not worth trying to use (very limited). You're best off using a third party host like imgur, flickr, etc.
What's the win condition for Moto Roader -- is it "get 1st place in one course and get the credits", or "get 1st place in all courses (and get the credits each time)"? It seems like each course (and all its heats) is self-contained.
Quote from: goldenband on 10/10/2016, 11:41 AMWhat's the win condition for Moto Roader -- is it "get 1st place in one course and get the credits", or "get 1st place in all courses (and get the credits each time)"? It seems like each course (and all its heats) is self-contained.

Well, sure! :D But the problem with Moto Roader is, there are seven different courses (each of which has eight different tracks, though the game calls them "heats" for some reason), and they're completely self-contained: /30j2t6v.jpg
That said, the usual standard I've seen with games with multiple self-contained things -- e.g. the different campaigns in a wargame -- is that if you get a victory screen + credits with any of the individual scenarios, you've beaten the game. And I figure the credits are likely to be identical for every course (if not, someone let me know).
So behold, my victory on the Normal course! -- which, again, is really a set of eight different "heats" or tracks:
/98dq8w.jpg
/1z4d0dy.jpg
This next one is very blurry (cheap cell phone camera) but the image at top shows my racer popping champagne with a stupid grin on his face, while the bottom is the credits starting to roll:
/ng9fev.jpg
So, is Moto Roader done now? (Or do I need to get seven identical credit sequences? :D)
In Davis Cup Tennis, I won the "Great Britain" tournament (a clear stand-in for Wimbledon) in Tournament mode and got a credits roll. Is this sufficient to call the game beaten for our purposes?
/14wxe8x.jpg
(https://i.imgur.com/JlcWIEe.jpg)
If not, I can take on the Championship mode (which may well give the exact same credits roll!), but I'll need to buy some sort of save backup unit -- I only have a CoreGrafx II -- and may not get to it this year. (I bought a Tennokoe 2 on Ebay but it arrived with severe battery corrosion...)
goldenband: I accept MotoRoader, even if it technically isn't 100% complete. I'm sure some other folks (myself included) could beat the other races if we really wanted to be "thorough" ;)
Does R-type Complete work in place of R-type? The gameplay is the same but continues are unlimited and there is an easy option. Using normal seems to make sense because there was no difficulty option in the US version. However, my argument for unlimited continues is that the game is an arcade port. In the arcade, you would have unlimited continues if you had unlimited quarters or playing on "free play". Just saying..

Cool. :) I'm definitely going to beat the other races on my own, of course, but usually in these sorts of projects if you get the same credits for every game mode, you only have to do one. I figured it'd be more help to this project if I could move on to a different game.

That's not a proper clear. Time Cruise does have an ending.
Copy that, but rule 9 is a little iffy, Alien Crush has an ending/congratulations screen. Word on the streets is it takes around 40 hours to beat Alien Crush. So for rule 9 are we just going for beating the ingame highscore on pinball games?
Time Cruise has an actual ending when you max out the score. You were just over 12% of the way to it. I've gotten Time Cruise's ending once... and only once. It's not easy to get to the ending but it can be done. It takes a few hours, lots of skill, and a handful of luck.

Updated today! We're now up to 98*/135!!! And it looks like several members are working on some more games! Lets do it!!!
My boys and I finally knocked Buster Bros out this weekend!

So with Buster Bros by Bardoly, that puts us at 100 completed! We have roughly one month left and this list remaining? Which one are you taking? C'mon!!

Going to play Sherlock Holmes tomorrow night, I think.
I think I'll take Lords of the Rising sun.

You're a good man. Granted I haven't touched it since I was a kid but I could never figure that game out.
I might try It Came from the Desert. I never did pass that game back in the day...

cool deal man.. I'm on level 16 (NECTOR) right now playing on my Turbo Duo.. having a blast again. :) It's been decades at this point since I played every level sequentially.. but I just remember how much of a disappointment level 32 was, I was hoping for an epic battle vs. the sparse one they gave. lol
I'm getting so much into it again I think I'm going to give the PSX version and the new 32 levels in there a spin again and see how I like it. I recall I gave up after only a few levels and never gave it another chance.
OMG, I've had a good time with Andre' Panza in the past, but this play-through was just a serious pain. I think I've fought Panza and failed a dozen times, Just when I got him down to nearly all "lights out" he put together a stupid comeback and crushed me, while I fuddled with my phone/camera to snap a pick.
Regardless, I was able to snap a few of his demise, however the shot of me holding the belt was missed and I'm not the #1 money/prize winner currently, however I did gain the championship and beat Panza. That's enough for me to consider it conquered.... lol

spida1a completed Sinistron back in July, but he never posted it here. I PM'd him and he said to go ahead and count it!

Let's knock a few more out!
Awesome, so close! But we have some of the most painfully difficult games left! Will be a serious challenge.
I spent almost 2 hours playing Battle Royal this weekend, got to round 10 and had to quit out of frustration. :(
Here is Vasteel.
http://youtu.be/KXQIxE7j2PE
I apparently stopped the video early as there was a short blooper about 30 seconds after I shut off the camera and then it said The End.
There are two endings. One for each brother. I played as the first one, oldest brother. I think Falial. Stefan I think is the younger brother. Leader of the rebel forces.
It's weird, I cannot hear that cd-rom tapping chatter sound when playing the console but it is annoying in the video. My camera must pick it up for some reason.
All the HuCards will be tough, but y'all are very close to at least knocking out all the CD games. Could someone just coast through the two Sherlocks with a walkthrough? (I'd do it but I don't have a CD unit yet)
I finished the first Sherlock Holmes game. The ending screen for all 3 cases is rather similar so I probably should've just snapped the score three times but oh well! I'm going to take a stab at a game that I've hated since the first time I ever played it next: Dropoff.

I will attempt another go at Battle Royale and see how much of Theron's Quest I can get in over the holiday break. :) Great work everyone regardless!
I have been working on Boxy Boy for awhile but got pissed/burned out on it (I think I'm at like 107 or somewhere in there). I've also been side tracked with a Commodore 64 project but perhaps I should go ham on it and see if I can get it done before midnight on 12/31/16.

According to the rules you could share the PW on here and someone else could give it a shot to continue to the end. :)
I feel a slight sense of accomplishment, even though this was likely the most frustrating 3+ hours of video gaming I've experienced in many years. But.. hey- All clear Battle Royale Championship on Intermediate. I won't be trying a higher difficulty, this game is unfair as fudge!

I recognize that "Master Royalty" screenshot... does it get recycled for multiplayer matches?
Because I have a hard time believing my brothers, or I, actually beat the game back in the day.

I'm actually not sure, it's possible that screen is shown when you win a Battle Royale with 5 participants? That would be lame if it was the same for 5 player and for the end of the game, but honestly it wouldn't surprise me. I do remember the victory screen changing every few rounds.

Anyway, cleared another sporty game: TV Sports Football hasn't been claimed yet. Using the Buzzards I got through a 10 game season just BARELY squeezing into the playoffs at 6-4.

Took out the "Tidal Waves" in the finals 17-3. (Stupid score screen disappeared before I got the phone/camera ready) I still haven't been able to accurately pass the ball at all, but I've gotten alright at delayed handoffs and just running the ball on nearly every play. Also, playing linebackers on DEF is a good way to get turnovers when they pass the ball.

Looking over the rest of the list, I'm not sure I have any more Turbo in me for the remaining 48 hours of the year. :(
It's been fun! Maybe we should start another thread for 2017 in regards to playing through the remaining 20+ games. :)
Great! Yeah, most of the remaining games are definitely the more difficult ones. I've been beating my head against the wall, trying to take R-Type down. I've made it up to level 6, but man, my shooter-fu is weak... ](*,) I might be able to do Boxy Boy if Desh has given up and is willing to share his current level password. I know that there are a few other games that were being worked on; hopefully they'll be cleared before the end of 2016.
For 2017, I was thinking of just starting a new thread fresh and try again to beat 'em all, but maybe we need a point system where easier games get less points than the more difficult games. That would require figuring out difficulty tiers though... We might be able to do a prize of some sort, something more tangible than simple bragging rights. :-k. What do y'all think, or does anyone else have any ideas?

GOAL: We must finish all the games, as soon as possible.
GOAL: We want everyone to participate and be proud they beat *multiple games*, even if they weren't the first to do so.
THEREFORE: The games that are "unbeaten" by the end of the year should automatically become the goal for the next mini-contest...but the mini-contest should not run a year...it should be shorter (a few months?) to encourage folks to play NOW.
Basically, I think this contest is fun because it can encourage folks to play (1) new games they don't know or (2) try to beat games they never have vanquished before.
SO, with that premise in mind (everyone should play, even games they don't know too well), "points" should be awarded for "all" completions...
(A) obviously, the first person to beat a game = maximum respect (Gold medal)
(B) however, folks who complete a game before mini-contest is over will still get some love! (2nd = silver, 3rd = Bronze, 4th = Blue ribbon, 5th and beyond = red ribbon)
The Olympics are fun, but we need another slot (or two) to encourage participation. RIBBONS!
QUALITATIVE, not quantitative: If a game requires an inordinate amount of skill/time to beat, we might consider a multiplier (ex. 3 gold coins for ______) — but, even if we don't do this, WE KNOW NOT ALL GAMES are equal.
So, respect is paid to folks based on the quality of their achievement to. Having several gold medals for beating shitty, easy sports games earns you the title QUEEN OF SHITTY SPORTS GAMES. This "honor" has much less weight than KING* OF ________ (R-Type).
I say: keep it easy and simple. Don't worry about determining the "point value" for games. We can worry about that later. Just make a disclaimer that this is not simply about tallying up points, but about rewarding dedication (time and skill)...
EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY.
:)
Personally, I will be really proud of myself if I could earn a red ribbon for every game left. Truth.
*Note: KING OF CASINO is already reserved for _______.
At Sega-16 we just kept going when we didn't finish the library in a single year. (We still haven't, but it's the journey that counts, ma-a-a-an.)
Continuing into 2017 with this year's unbeaten games as the top priority, rather than restarting from scratch, would be great -- but I'm down for whatever. (And still intend to beat that $#$%@ Hit the Ice...)
~80% completed discounting any games that get finished tonight. I guess a 'B' isn't a bad grade but it definitely isn't stellar.

Here is the shameful 22 that remain. For whatever reason these 22 games were left to the wayside by the masses at PCFX? Can we beat JUST these games in 2017? Should they be thrown down the shitter? Should we consider ourselves failures?
Maybe, but I think if we took one or two of these and played through them, mayhaps even MASTER them, we could then have a good chance to beat 'em all in 2018! Who's with me?!?!?
NOTE: I removed R-Type (Bardoly said he beat it, but hasn't taken pics yet) and my efforts with TV Sports Football and Theron's Quest. :)
Is SimEarth even "beatable"? I mean I never heard about anything about an ending in the PC version, and one of the scenarios is a simplified version of Lovelock's Daisyworld (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisyworld) so how do you beat that one?
note about simearth: it is based upon the "gaia hypothesis" which doesn't have all that much credit in the scientific community but at least it makes for an interesting model for a videogame sim.
There are only a few ways I can think of that would classify as "beating" SimEarth:
-Making the sun explode
-Causing the exodus on Venus
-Evolving robots
Soooo... a robot exodus on Venus followed by a supernova... that should do it. :D
I took on Drop Off, because I was really good at it 20 years ago... I am not good at it anymore.
Sports games are generally not all that popular, however aren't the most difficult to conquer either.
Be not afraid.
For 3-4 years I've been wait no for a former pcefx member to send me Jack Nicklaus CD.
I think it is time for my yearly email.
:)
The only one of the remaining games that I have is Lords of the Rising Sun, and I remember being totally confused the last time I tried playing that game. I'm not sure I will be able to make a contribution this time.
Reminds me I have a savegame on my DUO with antoku saved. Lords of the Rising sun seems to be very lame and I'll explain why:
-Localization feels rushed and unpolished (using Syscard font, tons of spelling errors, tons of grammar errors, nonsensical text, REMOVED VOICE ACTING)
-Battle mode has zero depth and feels like a minigame (compare it with the original LOTRS which you can tell is way better just by a screenshot)
-Other minigames are nothing more than annoying gimmicks
-Horse pursuit minigame is aggravatingly annoying since you have a 1 in a 100000 chance to actually kill a general with "0 ARMY". More annoying is that sometimes you'll pursue the enemy general for hours on the map doing this minigame over and over and over with no end in sight (my youtube channel has an hour of doing just that in this game).
-Killing generals is POINTLESS aside from retrieving the endgame treasures, since when you kill a general the game literally waits 1 or 2 seconds to show you the message "ASDFGHJ HAS RAISED AN ARMY". Since the army is fully fledged and with max troops, you're basically giving all the troops you killed back to the enemy.
-There is no pause button on the map screen. THERE IS NO PAUSE BUTTON ON THE MAP SCREEN. Important stuff happens every 2 seconds and you take at least 5 to scan through the map so you can't keep track of all your units. THERE IS NO PAUSE. NO PAUSE! (there's the save screen that pauses the game but of course you can't view the map while in it)
This game is very aggravating. Yet I still want to finish it.
I'm still planning to take another shot at Hit the Ice. Last time I got all the way to the final match and had winning chances.
BTW I like the Hit the Ice "series", such as it is, since different systems got very different ports. The Genesis and TurboGrafx versions of this game both have merit -- the Genesis version looks fancier but adopts a long, eight-match structure with passwords; the Turbo version has simpler graphics but is closer to the arcade game in many ways, with fun little bells & whistles like the octopus. But the SNES version is a disaster -- it looks like a slideshow!
I'm still halfway through Tricky Kick when I started it last year. Maybe in 2017 I'll stop playing better games, invest more time in Tricky Kick and finally finish it.

Finally updated today. I double-checked everything, and yes we cleared 113 out of the possible 135, leaving 22 unbeaten in 2016. Maybe we can beat these 22 this year?
Quote from: OldRover on 01/27/2017, 03:44 PMThere are only a few ways I can think of that would classify as "beating" SimEarth:
-Making the sun explode
-Causing the exodus on Venus
-Evolving robots
Soooo... a robot exodus on Venus followed by a supernova... that should do it. :D
This post is pure gold. I lol'd so hard when I read this.
I can beat King of Casino in an emulator with savestates.. would that be fine. :p Because screw playing through that normally

Quote from: MisterCrash on 01/27/2017, 07:20 PMThe only one of the remaining games that I have is Lords of the Rising Sun, and I remember being totally confused the last time I tried playing that game. I'm not sure I will be able to make a contribution this time.
I'd be willing to take the game off your hands if you don't want it any more!
I think this thread about King of Casino counts as another clear.

I started playing Lords of the Rising Sun again last night, as Kiyomori. I killed Yoritomo pretty much right off the bat. Now I just need to start knocking off the other generals, and I'll finish that campaign.
But will that count? Or is beating all three campaigns needed to count as beating the game?

Let's coop and beat the game together, what do you say? A scenario for each.

I'd be willing to share the glory of beating it with someone else. (Wait, not like that)
As far as killing the generals on the horse, all it takes is patience, practice, timing, speed, and luck.
Honestly though, I generally try to be behind and to their left. Then when you get kind of close, move toward them quickly swing the sword.
There have been times I've spent 15 minutes trying to kill one, and other times I get a whole bunch of kills that way right off the bat.
Excellent, I started Yoshitsune.
http://youtu.be/5scKSiMupeM
Now to kill Yoritomo.
LOTRS update: got the emperor, basically wiped out the light green army (I killed 3 generals in a row and made sure they had no castles so the "raised an army" event made a new warlord for another clan), neutered Genji clan. Now to (finally) fight yoritomo himself to see if I can kill him.
About horseback: I feel like the "difficulty" of killing generals might be scripted (ie don't kill someone before you're supposed to!) since the Heike warlords went down very easily yet I could not finish off generals from other clans. I hope the game doesn't force me to hunt for an invisible objective before being able to kill Yoritomo.
edit: latest gameplay video: http://youtu.be/YrdW2Pxuxyg
next video will be epic or a complete fail since I'll join all 4 warlords to attack Yoritomo all at once. I'd try some shurikens but I'm afraid to fail the assassination and have to commit sudoku (the game DELETES THE GODDAMN SAVE when you die ](*,))

I think that's seppuku. Although the prospect of being forced to play sudoku until you die is fascinating.

I think Punch intentionally used "sudoku" because, personally, seppuku is far more enjoyable than sudoku.

I need to stop playing this game and commit sudoku once and for all... my kingdom for a horse(back pursuit). I can't kill Kiyomori, not to mention the severe setback I just had with someone going rogue in a campaign where you have the least amount of warlords out of all campaigns... this is very aggravating.

I need to create my own thread for this game to get some fresh advice. Anyone here ever managed to win at this game? Please tell me because I'm starting to think it's impossible in the literal sense of the word.
At least sudoku is winnable.
I've been slacking on my Kiyomori game.
I just watched one of your horse back attacks. Some advice, you are going at them way too fast and crazy. I stay in a straight line, and let them fall back to you. Then try and attack at a diagonal direction.
CONFESSION: I have never really made much progress in this game. I am fascinated by it though.
But, since I stubbornly refuse to read FAQs and guides and stuff, this game is on my "nemesis" list along with Camp California (I just suck at Camp California).
You should give it another shot. It really is a good game. I get sucked in and next thing I know I've been playing for two or more hours.
Honestly I didn't know anything about it when I started. And I'm probably missing things from not reading the manual.
Like every time I attacked by ninjas, I'm dead. I know I am to block the sharokens, but I'm not 100% sure how.

Well, this is why I am following this thread. It totally got me psyched about this game again (knowing that others were enthusiastically playing it and making progress).
It is "motivational" and "aspirational"....
:)

I think your hint helped me this time but I'm still not 100% sure if killing a warlord depends on a blessing from the RNG gods or just very tight timing.
I'm not giving any spoilers but there's more than meets the eye in the game. The "New objectives always arise!" written in the manual is not to be taken lightly. I'll update this post with the playthrough video.
ps: my DUO almost gave up on me reading the burned game during a cutscene, I need to buy an actual copy of the game already. I don't have the video up yet because I have to edit the last dialog bits with the audio extracted from the disc to compensate a read error.
Carry on, Punch and mitsuman.
Carry on.
I just got killed by a ninja. Good thing there's SEL + RUN!
I need to stop playing and start uploading. I wonder if the CPU is forced to kill himself if the player wins at the ninja sequence.

The story isn't very complex but it was way more than I expected. I enjoyed this game a lot, wish I knew how to properly kill generals back when I thought this was a bad game.

Punch: I can't watch too much *now* until I've played this game again myself.
:)
However, without the explanations in this thread, I don't think I would have completely understood how this game works.
:)
TRANSLATION: This video series will be cherished by someone, someday. Have faith in the Lords*, my son.

Oh man, that is awesome!
I'm off work today. I'm thinking I'll go fire up the Duo and get back at it with Kiyomori.
I watched the last part of the video. The ending sequences are pretty great.
Impossimole is impossible. In every way, it's not that it's over the top challenging, it's just so unfair and disrespectful to your brain whilest playing. I just... I don't think it's possible to play through every level. :(

I have beaten Impossamole several times.
It has bad hit detection, for sure.
The last boss is YUUUUUGE, but kinda anti-climatic....still....
There are better things to do with your time unless Impossamole grows on you (I don't hate the game).

Your demands seem to be
Impossimole!
... Ah crap. I'll keep trying... ;)
Beat Military Madness more times than I can count. I love that game. When I first played it on the Turbo in 1989, I pulled an all-nighter.
The only other game that I found that addicting was Dune 2 on the PC a few years later.
One nice thing about being "ahem" older was experiencing the birth of so many game genres. Everything felt novel and fresh.
So assuming we don't get through the last games in our list for '16-'17, should we do a startover thread on New Years 2018? I'm kind of excited to try this once again next year.
I would definitely like to start with some of the more difficult 'gems', but it might encourage people to give these a shot again.
Maybe we'll do it this next time where multiple people can clear games? So like Military Madness could have clears by Nectarsis, Necromancer, and Nectrosister. and we'll just tally up all the clears. That was if a popular game like Air Zonk is already cleared, we can still include clears.
So for example, we could have clears like this:
2018 -
Total clears 256
Library completed 115/135
or something like that.
Thoughts? :)

Great Idea. Perhaps we should create a clears goal? can we hit 500 or 1,000?
Perhaps a raffle or other goodie could be in the works if we hit a goal? (Kickstarter style lol)
JUSt spitballin, but I think it could be a ton of fun.
A prize to whoever has the most clears? Damn, that's a cool idea. I'd pitch in $20 to see everyone go wilde with clears! :)
Or like, give out little prizes if someone can knock off one of the 20 bastards that kept us from achieving our '16-'17 goals. lol Those rotten jerks!!
