(https://web.archive.org/web/20190927223429im_/http://www.sarumaru.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/YukiGIF.gif) Hey y'all. I just wanted to share a little project that I'm a big part of, it's a web comic on Instagram titled Henshin-Engine FX-Unit Yuki. It's a tribute comic to the PC Engine about a gaming-gal named Yuki Shirokawa who just started an apprenticeship for the Jipang Electronics Corporation (JEC). Her favorite gaming console is the FX-Engine, a product of JEC. She later discovers something crazy about her beloved FX-Engine that would change her life.
(https://web.archive.org/web/20190927223428im_/http://www.sarumaru.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Yuki_run-FINAL.gif)Currently on the instagram @henshin_engine @fxunityuki - we post one piece of content every weekday, with a new comic page on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a character sheet on Thursday and a short FX Fun Fact video on Friday. For now the comic can only be viewed on instagram on mobile or the web at,

However, Henshin-Engine will soon appear on a very familiar PC Engine related site that most of you are likely familiar with, but I won't make that announcement until that happens. But for now, please follow Henshin-Engine on IG or check and like the Facebook page below!

I read the first pane. I will read later, after work.
Hopefully, Blodia will be integral to the storyline.
Nice wall of fame on the magazine rack.
I assume there's no Brothers Duomazov because it's been 'out of print' for nearly two years now. :|
Completely amazed! Woo!!
Also, *sniffle* Duomazov Brothers.
Holy crap! I love this!
And yeah, the magazine rack had some nice Easter Eggs in it. Nice touch.
It looks great! Will keep an eye out :)
Looking good :-)

Thanks! I like your enthusiasm :) There are little references all throughout to different things, though some may be hard to catch and a couple in the very beginning were in Japanese as well. I want to throw in all sorts of little references like this throughout the comic as a little extra thing that true fans of the PC Engine could appreciate.

Nah, she likes it kinky anyway apparently.
So, y'all know how we're working on a game for Henshin Engine from that small teaser image I posted. We're a bit more comfortable with the progress of the game in the last few days that we are ready to share a bit of video with you. here's an early gameplay clip of the initial training stage and title screen.
http://youtu.be/LMqzysTf7qg
The game is a 2D side-scrolling platformer and will start off following the events of the comic, but will actually be it's own adventure apart from the comic to some degree. the background visuals will get better, time is an issue so I am looking to pick up a person or two along the way for other tasks.
Let me know what you guys think, as this is something that's targeting PCE/Turbo fans. Is a game of such anime-flair something that interests you? I'd like to eventually have a shooter stage in place at some point to correlate with an event that happens in the web-comic, but we'll see how it goes. :)

Got a physical demo from Saru himself. He's the man and this game was great to play! Looking forward to a hell of a lot more. Now I need to catch up on the comic :)
I assume the music is all redbook, or am I wrong? The stage music sounds like it could be really well programmed chip music with adpcm drums???

Yeah only sound-a-like chip tunes, all recorded audio though not chip generated.
I hot to play the demo this weekend and it's awesome for a game so short in the development cycle. The controls were great and the visuals are awesome. I can't wait to own the finished product.
P.S. Tucci might be good at Tatsujin but he couldn't "beat" the PC Henshin demo. It probably has something to do with his youth. His reflexes have yet to mature.

Dude, your video's hilarious. I loved it. :D
As for the hater, his name's Ryan Cheung, he works for Shueisha Inc. and seems to have a major chip on his shoulder. He also made the unfortunate mistake of insulting CrackTiger's work, claiming he could do so much better. Anyone who knows me knows that I have massive respect for Black Tiger, Keranu, lord_cack, Nando, Seldane, and all of the other artists I have worked with... so insulting any of them is a great way to get on my shit list.
A new version of the game demo will be in Las Vegas at the Lvl Up Expo in 2 weeks. Yours truly will also be there.

We had an awesome showing of the game at Lvl Up Expo. :D We were even able to display multiple builds of the game, as I had my dev laptop with me and could update the game on-the-fly. Saturday's first build had a couple of bugs in it and no one could beat it except me, and even then only twice... yeah, it was that hard. I made a new build Saturday that fixed a few of the issues, making it more playable. Sunday's first build made it possible for people to actually get through stage 1-1, though it was still pretty hard... so I made a second build which increased the life count from 3 to 9. We actually had a few people clear the demo when said changes were made. Sarumaru and I both got pics of people playing the demo.

Woo, yeah it was a blast! I accomplished a lot. I beat the current incarnation of Henshin-Engine. I also beat Mysterious Song on normal mode and started EX mode.
And then... I did a no hit run on Henshin-Engine!!

The entire video is like 10hrs long. Can be found here. It has HE and MS back and forth throughout the night.

I should also mention that the first 1hr 30min was the latest build of the game.
BTW, my vids have a ton of swearing. May not be appropriate for younger audiences or at work.

The demo disc you got is not the final build for 2D Con... it's the one that was made just in case a more advanced build couldn't be made in time... however, a more advanced build was made in time, and it makes that one look easy. The moving platforms ramp up the difficulty considerably, as they move fast and require good timing to traverse... not to mention the fact that Sarumaru designed the stage to have those bloody obnoxious bees spawning around the already-precarious platform-jumping sections...
This is the final build for 2D Con. :)

oh wow, im sure with those moving platforms and them killer bees coming at you, that would definitely be a fun time!!! lol looks great!

Progress has been good and so far we haven't reached any hurdles. I am trying to find ways to speed things up but even if we keep up at this pace, we should meet our self proposed deadline of March. We are working on the next stage of the game at the moment. As some of you may know, every stage in HE is based on a parody-version of a game that will appear in the HE comic. The next stage in development is a Castlevania themed stage after the parody-themed game in HE, Castlevampire-Z ;)

Similar, except that it will have a full color manual. This is just a fold out with inserts and the disc is a paint coated cdr. The CD duplication will have a silk-screened, pressed disc much like any retail disc. My shitty camera don't do this packaged version justice though. >.<

QuoteFAN-F@CKING SPLENDID. For a happy, cheerful soundtrack, this sounds great. I hope Simon will use his powers to create somber, darker soundscapes in other PCE projects. Hell yeah! This music is so great. Can't wait to play the game to go along with it
Just so everyone knows... someone has stepped up to the plate to fill a role that neither Saru nor I can fill properly, and that's the task of doing the backgrounds. Gredler did the amazing stage 00 but was not able to join us for the entire project, so Saru and I attempted to do the work for the rest of the game. The results were... below what they should be for such a game. So, we've enlisted another amazing artist to fill the position, and as usual, he never fails to deliver. I'll let him decide whether or not he wants to announce his presence on the project, but here's a teaser of things to come:

I don't want to go into too much detail, but work and my upcoming wedding put me out of a realistically reliable role. I would never want to bottle neck the progress of such a rad game!

Sadly, It's probably just the beginning of a long list of things that will be sacrificed to have a marriage.
Waifus and the marriage alter hath no mercy.
wow the new background for the cave stage is looking awesome as hell!!!! love the onibro statue!!!!
The game looks very nice!
Will more animations be added to the main character sprite in the future? I noted that she kind of jumps and moves like a stick figure. If you added more frames of animation to cover jumping, turning from one direction to another, etc, you could probably get it looking very smooth. I'm sure it's probably just a place-holder, but I figured I'd ask anyway just in case. :-) Good work!
Nothing in the game is placeholder, but nothing in the game is immune to revision either. :)

Next demo is ready to roll out, I think. Game On Expo will be the next place Henshin Engine will be on display.

Ok, I left a comment at HCG just to support Team Henshin.
:)
I should be writing an article about HE soon for a friends website. I will post a link to it soon hopefully. The demo is a lot of fun. I was lucky enough to score one at gameon expo a few weeks ago
The game is looking great. Keep up the good work.
Was just watching this video and they name dropped Saru and henshin engine talking about devs with passion! It happens near the last couple minutes of the video.

You guys are showing the game in my home town this weekend (at LinCon). Sadly, I won't be there. But man...I spent so many hours in the arcade at that bowling alley.
If you get a moment, there's a great place called Sawmill Brewing less than a block south of the event. Check it out!

Seems like a cool dude. Nice, so he worked at Capcom and before that Atari and Primal Rage.
HENSHIN ENGINE KICKSTARTER!!!
kickstarter.com/projects/sarumaru/henshin-engine-the-game-pc-engine-tg-16-pc-steam
I did my best to push it to the other forums I frequent, and will back it when I get paid later this month (too many bonk t-shirts and other unexpected expenses to commit now.)
Good luck Saru, Nodt and anon artist + musicians, you guys deserve to get backed and I wish you all the best!
Get it!!
I pledged, tweeted, and posted it on some forums. Can't wait!
I plan to back it later today after work. I hope they get funded.
Pleged for the physical copy. Looking good so far!
My pledge is in!
Ok, just backed the physical copy. Looking forward to trying this out.
i also pledged as well. i hope this shit gets funded!
I backed it as well! Keep up the good work Saru and Rover!!
made a review on the newest demo of henshin engine about the kickstarter and talking more about the game.
Hope yall enjoy!!!

Super exciting! I will definitely try and back it this month.
I'm trying to compare all the rewards between the higher tiers though, I feel like a rewards grid would be very helpful on the Kickstarter page. Is the only difference between the $100 and $140 tier the fact that the comic book comes in color?
Aaron Nanto posted a great Henshin Engine video!
http://youtu.be/nNbzOsP7BJk
That's an awesome video!!!!
Henshin Engine made it to 50% funded this morning!! Still 27 days left to pledge!
One of the stretch goals should be an easter egg video of Esteban doing a turbo dooble hidden on the disk. I'm sure pledges would sky rocket.
Heh, that'd actually be cool. The given stretch goals don't interest me at all, as I've zero fucks to give for NOBEY versions and I really don't need to see Saru and Nod hanging out in their underwear drawing and coding Yuki.
Though I'm not a fan of kickstarter, I went ahead and pledged at the $39 level.
It's ok, you won't see me coding in my underwear. I don't wear underwear. The only thing I wear while coding is the soft glow of my dual monitors.
You are now scarred for life.

That's not how you spell 'intrigued'.
its almost 9000!!!!!!!
IT'S OVER 9000!!!
Can one of the stretch goals be a Saturn port coded in assembly using both VDPs? And released like, only 3 weeks later? Seems reasonable.

A Saturn port is possible now that there's Jo Engine.

Are JO-crystals compatible with jo-engine?
Also: I hereby forbid any "jo-mama" jokes from this thread.

I wanna try that Sonic game on that link. Looks badass. They should have done that back in the day right away instead of waiting to attempt a 3D one. but I digress. That's a discussion for elsewhere.
148 backers
$10,087 pledged of $16,400 goal
24 days to go
Getting closer!! :D
Why does the internet have such a hard-on for the Dreamcast? I love the system, i've had mine since the month of launch, but I don't think every retro style game has to be ported to it lol.

I'd much rather do a Sega-CD port and find the best ways to reduce the number of unique colors while keeping everything looking nice. It also suits the premise of the manga and PCE game, being real 16-bit hardware.
It'd also be cool to play as the Mega Drive character and swap out some of the backgrounds inspired by games/series which didn't appear on Genesis/Sega-CD with ones that did.
The first few stages so far are all based on series that appeared on Genesis.

That's a cool idea, and if nothing else would make for a good sequel.

Honest Question: Is there one, definitive thread for Henshin-Engine?
I found this one, obviously, but I thought there was another thread with more recent posts...
Anyway, ever since I played the demo for Henshin-Engine (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=21372.msg470778#msg470778) at AVGC, I've been meaning to go back and play Shubibinman (the first one)...
...well, I finally remembered to play the damn game tonight. It only took me THREE months. Ridiculous? Yes.
Playing through Shubibinman made me appreciate the demo for Henshin-Engine even more! I have never been the biggest fan of Shubibinman, but Henshin-Engine has forced me to go back and give this damn game some love!
After all these years, with countless people stating that Shubibinman was worthy of some love... well, I think I am slowly seeing the Light.
Shubibinman

MORAL OF THE STORY: A new game has helped me appreciate an old one. :)
Hi Estebianz. The thread you're thinking of was started by sirchman here: https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=21471.315
Also, Shubibinman is amazeballs! Glad HE made you want to go back to trying it. Much of HE was inspired by Shubibinman.
