Title: My LIKE NEW Turbo in box is up for sale
Post by: iretrogamer on 07/11/2016, 10:02 PM
NOTE: The initial price on this was way too high. I have since lowered it to a starting bid of .99 to be completely fair. Thanks.

Parting is such sweet sorrow but I realized I'm content with just owning my Duo.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/122043065986 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/122043065986)

I've had this practically brand new TurboGrafx-16 sitting in storage for YEARS. I only had it hooked up for a brief period before I put it back in it's box. Comes with everything (including Keith's Courage) but the printed materials it came with originally. Not sure where those went to.  :-k

Hoping it goes to a great Turbo collector. Recently sold my Camp California with some help from the guys here. Thanks again everyone.

Brought it down to $800. Last few in this condition (practically new out of box) sold for $900 so I think I'm being fair. Besides, the Buy It Now option goes away when someone bids.

J/K....

I really came.
Sooo honesty isn't the best policy?

Guys some of you are crapping on me for the BIN price. Thats only there for the people who can drop that much immediately. If they want it that bad it's there's.

I'm a collector and hardcore fan. Don't think I'm being unfair here.

Those plastic seals often don't come off when you've left them on this long, so those items will likely never look great.

sorry to shit on your parade but 800 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much to be asking on system that isnt new.

it looks great no doubt about it but its "like new" but its not "new". theres a difference. the system has been played a few times according to your description on ebay so you can't sell it at factory sealed new price.

OK, I've taken some of the feedback I've gotten here into consideration and lowered the Buy It Now price to $650.

I really do think this is in the realm of fairness and I want to be fair to those in the community.

You all helped me sell my Camp California so I appreciate your advice and help.

And upon further reflection and research, I've lowered the starting bid to $150 and the Buy It Now to $400.

I realize what I knew of it's value in this condition was inaccurate. This wasn't a case of me trying to swindle anyone. I'm really not a seller.

Post by: Otaking on 07/12/2016, 07:46 AM
I can't comment on the price as I don't follow current TurboGrafx prices these days, so have no idea if it's good or bad, but I would avoid saying things such as "LIKE NEW" in all capitals and playing up how mint it is when there's a massive dent on a corner of the box and all the paper work is missing. I just say that as I reckon if a buyer doesn't check the listing and pics very closely they would be super pissed when they recieve the item.

Of course I read it, and I've no doubt your initial high starting and buy-it-now prices were calculated to get such responses.  The only other logical explanation is that you're a complete idiot (admittedly quite possible) and forgot that you were given the exact same advice for your Camp California auction.

How long will it be after this auction ends before you post yet another overpriced, poorly described, and misleading auction?  We want to 'help' you!

This is the last one I have to offer unless I decide to sell my Syd Meads.

Look, I understand how you came to your assumption. Truth is I just sold off a Jaguar CD in Box for $800 and got a little jumpy. My initial price was unguided and perhaps a little greedy.

I'm really a collector and longtime gamer since I was a kid in the 90s. I finally started selling off pieces of my collection that I obtained with my Dad growing up.

Hope you can shed the assumptions and think better of me.

Well this was an extra thing he bought when the TG16 was clearance. I'll never sell my original DUO. Still have that.

Part of the money I make will go to help with LIFE... kids, wife, mortgage... and part of it goes back into obtaining some rare games for my collection that Dad and I never got back in the day.

If you don't know what something is worth, so you just ask some crazy price several times what you've seen it sell for, then you are gouging.

If someone had BIN'ed it at $850, would you have issued a refund of $450 - $600 the next day?

That's besides the point. Point is, I made some changes after I realized I wasn't being fair. I think a little grace should be extended right?

This has to be some game journalist trolling us for research or maybe Nintega is back. I don't know. $850 for fucking TG-16 is...it seems impossible that even the most perfectly mint TG-16 in the universe would even be worth 1/4 of that. A decent TG-16 is $50-80. The other $800 comes from...his ass?

Thank you Sparky for adding those extra labels. I asked if you would do it for free for publicity as the YT channel has over 7,000 subscribers and I thought that was reasonable. That happens all the time in business. You gracefully declined and I still bought from you because it was a great product.

I'm sorry that I've rubbed you all the wrong way. I made a bad judgment call listing this extremely high and then I changed it when I realized I was out of line.

I really want to ask forgiveness from this community because I love Turbo games and the retrogaming community at large. I've been collecting since I was a kid, with my father who is now passed away. I feel like it's in my blood and a part of me.

There's a lot of dog piling going on right now and if you're all willing, I think you'll realize I'm a pretty nice guy.

I've been in the community for YEARS. Back in 2001 I was the webmaster at SegaMasterSystem.com, I was only 15 years old, but I helped build a community of Master System fans.

My Dad and I shopped from Turbo Zone Direct all the time back in the 90s and that is why I have so many rares and extra stuff.

Again, I apologize for coming off like a $$$ hungry gouger. I have lowered the price... it was never my intention to cheat anyone. That's why I listened and reacted.

Agreed. That is pretty fucked up...
Cry to someone that cares.  Mods have the same rules to follow as everyone else, and last I checked "always be nice" wasn't in my job description.
You may not care, but I agree mocking someone losing a family member is pretty low.

If NecroPhile's comment was simply cruel, then yes, I would agree with you.

However, the comment was also horrifically hilarious and I almost spewed my coffee on the campfire. Hilarious + cruel is definitely better than merely being cruel. Or maybe it is even more evil? Hmmm, I might just be an evil person.

I am guilty.

Regardless, All is Not Lost.

The key thing is that most of us are willing to give iretro a second/third/fourth/fiftieth chance to redeem himself, but he has had a tough time digging himself out.

For every half-step forward, he takes 1.75 steps backwards.

BUT THAT'S OK, because we really can coexist if he spends some time to figure out the pcefx community. He certainly seems more promising than many other folks whose tenures have been fleeting.

Think about it: even if iretrogamer doesn't agree with us, he (probably) has at least considered and contemplated our viewpoints. THIS ALONE puts him above most folks, who outright discount opposing viewpoints.

True, we will never know the actual degree of his sincerity, but that can be said of 99% of people in general.

iretrogamer: Don't worry. Take some time. Don't rush. In time you will become part of our dysfunctional family.

iretrogamer, I'm sorry for your loss. I enjoyed the one video of yours I watched and I hope you stick around and participate in discussions here and not just engage in commerce. :)

I'm not trying to say it wasn't cruel or that it was totally appropriate, just that it was within the rules.  It may be 'wrong' in terms of some community standards, sure, but is it worse than the constant sex jokes, misogyny, mental handicap jibes, or telling people to go fuck themselves simply because they asked too high of a price?  I think not.  The bar isn't set that high here, but y'all are free to petition for rules changes.

Maybe I should try this any time I want to buy anything from now on.  Since I have twice as many subs as you (which is still a small number if we're being honest with each other) you should sell me your TG-16 for $100 shipped, and in return I'll give your channel a shout-out on my channel.

Also, maybe it's because I spend most of my time on the Neo-Geo forums, but I thought Necro's comment was funny.  Oh no!  He insulted a profiteer who is only here for self-promotion!  I've said way worse shit to people on the forums.

I one time listened to Joan Rivers say that she made a cancer joke and a person got up and screamed how awful it was cause their family member died from it.  She called the person a hypocrite because they had laughed at all the other offensive stuff she said, but they took the cancer joke personally because it was close to home.

Moral of the story is the majority of people aren't saints, so you can't pick and choose what crosses the line if you yourself have crossed lines.

My girlfriend has diabetes and I now personally cringe when I hear diabetes jokes, but I never tell people to stop telling those jokes.

One would think a moderator would hold himself to a higher standard, when posting on the forums where he is a moderator. Given that they no longer represent only himself, but the website as a whole, you'd think that would inspire one to be on his best behavior. I guess not.

But what do I know, I'm just the local troll.

It totally is.  So do we have a deal, then?  Here's what I was thinking:

For $150 shipped, I will just say "iRetroGamer.com", with no context, at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $125 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $100 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $75 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to my buddy iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

If you give me the console absolutely free, I will say "...and please check out my good buddy's up-and-coming YouTube channel, iRetroGamer.com, for in-depth analysis of all of your favorite retro games." at the end of my next LAUNCH VIDEO (lots of views!).

I do appreciate that you like my channel, and it's not that I'm purposefully trying to sound like an ass, but think about how snarky this post seems, and then think about how you sound when you go to someone like Sparky, who doesn't know you from Adam, with your hand out asking for free stuff in exchange for a plug.

LOL these were funny examples.

I get where you are coming from, but I honestly thought it was a harmless gesture I was making. I thought "If at least 2-3 of my viewers end up purchasing a set from Sparky, then why not throw some my way (I was asking for the smaller set of labels)." I'm friends with video game author Brett Weiss after doing a video about his ROOM OF DOOM and his occupation as a video game writer. As a kind gesture he gave me a copy of his latest book.

Now I suppose I should have just done the video spotlight on Sparky and his work and let it be his decision on whether or not he wanted to give me any freebies. I guess I'm still learning the etiquette around this sort of thing.

I can understand where I would come off as a little sneaky asking up front. My apologies.

Bear in mind that everything I've said is just my personal opinion and not any kind of set-in-stone YouTuber etiquette.

I've gotten a few Everdrives free from krikzz, but I had already done reviews of I think 3 of his products, and he's the one who offered to send me more based on those reviews.  I also got a free book, but the author put out a call for reviewers and I just threw my name into the hat.  If doing reviews and getting free stuff is something you're interested in doing, then just start doing reviews and people will come to you.  I've turned down multiple offers of free homebrew games in exchange for reviews just because I don't want to turn my channel into that kind of deal.  The Everdrives I was reviewing anyway because I think they're awesome, and the book review was a text article that went on my website.

I think it's one thing to approach a *company* and say "hey I have this YouTube channel and I am interested in reviewing your products", but when it's a guy like Sparky who just does it for the love of the community, that's when you cross over into "poor form" territory.

Good advice. Thank you. I can definitely see the error in how I approached it.

Would love for you to check out some of my videos. We have a similar style in our documentary approach. Also the "My Retro Life" videos I do are very well received. They are a series of home movie videos taken from my childhood in the 90s growing up with a "Gamer Dad".

Wow, this is the darkest thread I've read on these forums, what a bummer  :-({|= .
Did Tim Burton orchestrate this debauchery ?

iretrogamer - sorry for your loss man, but I am envious of the memories you have with your dad he sounds like  he was a great guy. I watched your master system videos and commented on them saying the same in the past (Gregory Brant on youtube)

Necro, it's comments like that which encourages people to be quiet about their personal lives and no share. You have every right to say them, but I have to agree that the degree of hurtful intent in that statement was unnecessary, and no one would think less of you if you apologized for crossing the burn line, asick burn, but so sick it's disgusting [who get's the reference? zeta?]

I agree that iretro screwed the pooch on the price, and making a thread about it made it even harsher; this could've been answered in PMs from experienced members after taking the time to form relationships with them.

The reality of someone losing a love one who was obviously dedicated to NEC and turbo, is a fucked up harsh thing to think about.

And Sparky, congratulations on beating the C beast, that's a blessing for you and your family and I'm really happy to hear you came out of that darkness sharing this world with us and playing some fun games from time to time

I hope your game console sells at a reasonable price for both you and the customer, and I hope this becomes water under the bridge. Next time you have a spare moment on the shitter or something, why don't you post in the daily dose of gaming (all platform "what I'm playing discussion thread" in console gaming section) or the turbo what I've been playing thread. The community here is more open armed about opinions and game discussion than any I've been involved with, and the opposite is true about BST threads (which I think is why my broke ass enjoys this forum so much)  :)

It seems to me like there is way too much bullying that goes on here.  The guy lowered his price, even though he had every right to charge whatever price he wants.  Likewise, nobody is forced to buy it.  Who cares if people collect this stuff?  It's not going to stop going up in value just become some fans who like to talk about how cool the games are deem it to be too expensive.

There is way too much negativity here.  Attacking someone personally is just uncalled for.

There is no welcoming me.  I have been here much longer than most of the people active on here.  I had another account many years ago.  Anyway, I guess people are just bored or something.  I just don't like seeing people justifying themselves, be it because they want to buy something, or because they said something shitty to someone.

Quote from: gatsu25 on 07/15/2016, 11:31 AMIt seems to me like there is way too much bullying that goes on here.

I have no idea who you are since I barely pay attention around here anymore, but I went back and read your Duo-R thread.  You need to either grow a thicker skin or stick to over-moderated forums like NintendoAge and Sega-16 or the "retrogaming" areas of Reddit.  When you come to a forum and lay out your plans for doing something, people are going to have dissenting opinions.  When you come here and tell us that you're going to spend $1000+ on a Turbo-Duo setup, while using a Retro Freak for everything else because you want to "start collecting retro games", you're going to get dissenting opinions.

Zeta is never nice, but he is often wise.  True to his form, he came off much more harshly than he needed to in that thread, but I agree with almost everything that he said.

The irony, of course, is that MANY of us came to the consensus that you didn't start things off too well.

A person that says a forum needs more moderators is the same type of person who would've been cheering when guys with red armbands were marching down the street and enforcing what's right.

I only post in this forum because the world gets awful scary when people need higher powers to strictly enforce a regimented lifestyle.  I imagine if more strict moderators were put in place here, a few years down the road we would all look back and say, "what the fuck did we just do?"

I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with me. Just be polite when doing so. After so many times of going back and forth with him and one other in there I unfortunately had enough and fed some back. That, admittedly, caused me to react the way I did in here. I read this whole thread the way you say you read mine. The way a few people treat others around here is more than just "dissenting opinions," and that may unfortunately be many people's first impressions of a forum. In my thread, I tried to end the argument and smooth things over a couple times with Zeta. It was never acknowledged.

I wonder sometimes if a society (like this forum) just gets so used to people acting rudely that they don't even notice or they just shrug it off. But, you have now had 2 new people in here, as well as others, having issue with how people have treated others in just the past few days. Maybe some things that have become cultural norms should change? Perhaps the ones with dissenting opinions about how people should be treated should be listened to as well?

If not... Maybe you are right. Maybe this is not where I should be. I don't need to develop a "thicker skin." I have a very strong opinion on how people should be treated. That opinion does not stop before myself, and I will fervently defend others as I would defend myself. Obviously, I am not ashamed to defend myself when I feel attacked. I admit that I have not been perfect. But I will always admit that I have been wrong and apologize if I have done something that is hurtful to another. If I have done so, please point it out and I will try my best to reconcile. But I won't break my back over it if the other party won't listen.

I may not completely agree with you, but I do appreciate your willingness to not attack me in the process of disagreeing with me. Thank you. I hope you feel that I have been respectful to you as well.

I don't place much value on politeness. It's a nice idea, but the biggest assholes on earth have no trouble using it so what is it really worth?. I'm sure Henry Kissinger will sit on a throne of skulls in hell but at the same time he is a master of politeness. Politeness is more of an asset to the evil that anyone, really. The best disguise.

Meanwhile Issac Newton was apparently rude at best and he single handedly advanced science centuries.

It just seems to slow down conversation. These threads lately where the crotchety geezers dump on the noob instantly because of the placement of one word in a post...the only thing more amazing than how many times this happens is how many times it genuinely cuts right through and ferrets out the assholes as intended.

The things being attacked are human vices like greed and deception, we're not burning gypsies and books here.

I understand all of what you're saying.  Try to understand things from our end.  This is not about you, it is about what we see around here week in and week out.

What you have to understand is that some of us have been part of the "scene" for a long time.  When I got started with this hobby (in the late 90's), I didn't even know that "video game collecting" was a thing.  I just figured that I could finally pick up all of the systems and games that I had wanted as a kid because everyone else was just throwing them out.  I was just playing and enjoying "old video games" for a solid 5 years before I discovered that people actually collected this shit for the sake of collecting it, or for that matter even found an online community of other people who also enjoyed playing old games.  I just did it on my own because I enjoyed it.  Nowadays, people just seem to decide over coffee one day that they should "start collecting 'retrogames'", and they go on to embody everything that is wrong with this hobby.  Many of these folks eventually find their way onto these forums because *of course* they want to collect for the TurboGrafx, because the shit is rarer and therefore makes them cooler to their collectard buddies.  They show up here, and their very first post is "WTB: TurboDuo", because of course these shelf queens want to hoard Turbo games, but don't want to pay eBay prices, so they think we'll cut them a deal.  So when you come in here talking about how you're gonna drop a grand on a Turbo and XRGB mini, but then just use a RetroFreak for everything else, it just sends up red flags for some of us.

Seriously, if you're cool with emulation (which you must be if you want a Retro Freak) then just get a Wii and mod it, or build an emulation box and buy some controller adapters.  If I didn't already own all of this shit, there's no way I would start buying it now.  I'd get a small form factor PC and a bunch of controller to USB adapters, and just have fun.

If you are dead-set on going the route you're planning, then that's your decision but you can't expect everyone here to kiss your ass about it.  If politeness is really that important to you, then like I said you need to stick to online communities that prioritize that (i.e. heavy moderation).  Places like this and the Neo-Geo forums don't coddle people.  You either fit in, or you're going to have a rough time.

The red flag for me was his insistence on the Duo-R's price, with an ever changing parts list to justify the inflated cost quoted.  If you want a Retro Freak, skip the made up numbers to rationalize your decision and just go buy the silly thing; it's okay if we don't "understand".

I greatly prefer loosely moderated forums over hyperactive places with aggressive mods. If one wants over-moderated forums, obviously as previously mentioned there are lots of places for him to go. I don't think anything here is bad at all tbh, but maybe I've been on the internet too damn long.

This was pretty odd to me too. Has to be a Duo R, has to have it modded immediately, needs all these extra peripherals right away. It's his money but yeah...it all seemed to be justification for buying the retrofreak. If you want the retrofreak, just buy it and enjoy it.

Yeah the mindset is a bit silly. Some people would probably consider me a collector of fantasy/sci-fi paperbacks, anime, movies, video games etc... To me it is more of an accidental collection than anything else, because I don't get rid of something I might want to revisit since I don't need to do so to buy more media. But I'm just buying this stuff because I want to watch/read/play it. If you aren't doing that then what is the point? I have a friend that is a sealed collector and he drives me nuts from time to time about it when I tell him he should just ditch the sealed copies (he goes for one open and one sealed of stuff).
