I don't really want to be too specific about this topic... and I may actually kill it with the first post.
Valis II was the earliest Valis entry on PCE for years... until a port of Valis I was released for PCE (years later). Valis I appeared on numerous platforms (Famicom, PC's) but folks outside of Japan only had access to Valis I on Genesis. So, TG-CD owners would have to look to Genesis for the first installment f the Valis saga.
Rayxanmber II is the earliest PCE entry in the series... the first game was on FM Marty?
Time Cruise II was originally just Time Cruise, but it evolved and changed over the years. I think it was a wise move because a "sequel" implies a successful first entry... and it gives a fresh veneer to a project in development for years (?).
Strip Fighter II was obviously riding on the success of Street Fighter II.
Final Zone II was a sequel to X68000 and MD/Genesis FZ I. FZII is unique because PCE/TG-CD was the only platform it appeared on? Correct?
So, not that anyone cares, but I find this stuff interesting. Am I forgetting anything?
Feel free to expand the scope of the original topic in creative ways (like, PCE games that have sequels on other platforms... like Cho Aniki?)
Legend of Valkyrie was a sequel to a famicom game.
Galaga 88 is another one.
1943 Kai was an update to 1943

XZR -> XZR2 (Exile) -> XZR3 (Astyanax) -> XZR (VCR)
Be kind.

You're forgetting:
Son Son II ... aka revenge of HANUMAN
And as far as US games that never saw the JP predecessors (and were thusly mislabeled for US Audiences)
Shockman
Samurai Ghost
Cosmic Fantasy 2 (.....CF1? or 3&4?)

For years I wondered wtf XZR stood for until I actually looked at the kana title that comes with it in boxarts.
XZR -> Ex-Zee-Ar ≈> EkuZiAru ≈> エグザイル -> Eguzairu -> Exile

Thanks for this! I always wondered about that as well.
Hyper Nova Blast!
Good call on that, Tigre_Noir!
(French Canadian)
Rainbow Islands
Dammit, late on that one.
I wouldn't say Hatris or Hypernova Blast are sequels. The former is just another falling brick game from the same guy and the latter is more of a slightly upgraded port.

Hatris was the only way for the real creator of Tetris to make a sequel. If Liquid Kids, Phantasy Star II, Son Son II, Super Mario Bros 2 USA, Vasteel 2, etc count as sequels, then Hatris might as well.
I do think that many games are both enough of a sequel and a remake and consider them within the realm of both.
Hyper Nova Blast has the full effect of the thread's subject, in that most Turbo players are unaware of the original game. It's similar to Star Soldier/Super Star Soldier.
How about these?
Terrestrial Defense Force 2
Linda 3
Might and Magic III
Wonder Boy III (or for that matter Adventure Island)
I don't think that Linda was ever square(d) or to the power of one.

How about Welltris? I'm pretty sure he could say TETRIS II if he wanted to since he owns the copyright for anything with the "tris" suffix in puzzle games as far as I know

I am still debating if lame, corny gags do more harm than good...
...but I will still perpetuate them, sadly.
UPDATE: Ouch! That hurt... :(

The rights didn't revert to Pajitnov until '96. Back when Hatris was made Tetris was owned by the Russian government. Communism and all that.

Linda to the power of one is pretty linear.
