Title: CD-ROM2 tries to run games as audio CDs
Post by: cueball1897 on 09/23/2016, 10:52 PM
I received my CD-ROM2 in the mail and it's malfunctioning. I think I might have an issue with the lens.

The console has the original yellowed gear installed, the lens will move, and CDs will spin. I cannot get the only game I have (which is a demo) to run and the system will not run audio CDs. Please help.

Thank you for your time.

If CDs spin then the gear is still functioning so it's not that. Likely culprits would be a bad lens, some bad caps, or the lens needing adjustment.

Also, you should try playing an audio CD in the CD drive with it not attached to the system. This will let you know if the docking station is possibly the problem.

It plays CDs while not docked just fine, so now I have a new mystery to solve. I completely overlooked the fact that the IFU-30 could be the culprit.

Edit/Update:

Think I found the problem...

That corroded pin does not look good at all. You might get lucky and be able to clean it with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. I've had to do this for a few systems before.

I cleaned it up a bit and the pin has completely corroded away from the board.

if there is enough pin left coming out the connector, you can use a wire to connect it back to the pcb.

Ugh, sounds like you are going to have someone solder in a replacement port or just get another ifu. I don't think it's possible to just change  one pin.

yeah, just clip off the bad part and remove the corroded piece from the hole in the pcb (hopefully the hole is not corroded too or you will have to trace it back and find the next place to attach it).  clean it up real good and then attach a wire between.  it looks like most of the horizontal piece is still nice and shiny so should be good.

Oh good, yeah you should be able to solder in a wire or cap lead to replace the bad part.

Maybe tomorrow I'll mod the IFU-30 for RGB
