Title: Policenauts on Saturn translation project complete
Post by: poponon on 10/07/2016, 09:19 AM
for those interested, policenauts on saturn now has a complete translation patch. I gotta try this out on real hardware soon.

Guilty of still not having played the SegaCD version of Snatcher myself so I wouldn't skip forward to this. Learned of it yesterday too and shared for anyone that would make the time for it.

Wow nice. I've played through it on 3DO years ago but never got around to playing entirely through the fanslation on Playstation. I may try the supposedly updated Saturn version.

I bought the Saturn version bitd and made guides for the gaijin protection. It is definitely noticeably updated compared to the PSX version. The 3DO version would be preferable if it really has the Snatcher style talking heads. I remember seeing them in screenshots, but didn't come across any as far as I played into it.

The readme for the translation covers a bunch of the differences between versions

QuoteII. Saturn Version Differences
==============================

Present in the original game, these differences also apply to the English patch.

- The game's glossary, previously available on Policenauts.net, can now be accessed in-game at any time by pressing the Z or Start buttons. The first time a term in the glossary appears in any game text, be it in-game or voiced, it is followed by an asterisk, indicating it as a glossary term. The glossary can be browsed by three methods: Recent (the twelve most recent terms that have appeared), Categories, or Alphabetical.

- Support for the Virtua Gun/Stunner peripheral. There is also a Shooting Mode in which the player can access the Shooting Trainer or any of the game's shooting scenes (after completing them in the story once). Note that the scenes you can access depend on which disc is in the system. For example, if you want to access a shooting scene on Disc 2, you must enter Shooting Mode from Disc 2.

- Additional scenes.

- Altered dialogue in a handful of scenes.

- Additional character close-ups.

- Additional "breast bouncing" interactions and uncensored bouncing. (Sony censored the PlayStation version by having the bouncing animation toned down.)

- Bonus videos that become available after completing the game.

- Two alternate versions of the ending credits. The easiest way to access these is simply reload the final save point in the game; you do not have to replay the entire game to view them.

- Support for the Back-Up RAM Cartridge/Power Memory peripheral.

- The anime cutscenes now run at 24 frames per second, instead of 15 in the PlayStation version, but the video quality is slightly reduced.

Like the PlayStation version, the Saturn version supports the Shuttle Mouse peripheral.

Also like the PlayStation version, if you have save data from the game Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You, the game will insert additional dialogue into a handful of conversations, depending on how you played Tokimeki Memorial. This consists of throwaway jokes that imagine Jonathan Ingram as being the protagonist in Tokimeki Memorial. Though as of this writing no English translation patch for the Saturn (or PlayStation) version of Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You is available, like the PlayStation patch we future-proofed the patch by translating this dialogue as well.

The Saturn version also has a bunch of extra effects like transparencies, pockets of animation in backgrounds and all kinds of touches that aren't in the Playstation version.

I'm in the same boat. I've wanted to play Snatcher since I first seen pics of it in magazines back in the day. I have recently been contemplating burning a copy of it because I'll never buy one.

Someone translated the MSX Snatcher as well. So people clearly do this, and there's already mostly all of the same assets available from the Sega CD one.

I bought Policenauts for Saturn after it became clear the english version wasn't coming out back in the day.  I was always sorta disappointed that the PSX one got the translation, when I had backed the Saturn camp.  This is great news!  I just got a new job and should finally have some money to throw around, so I want to get a XRGB mini and some RGB cables for my Saturn soonish. I'll definitely have to check out the translation for this.

I also have the 3DO one and Policenauts Pilot Disc too, which are also both worth checking out.  I always liked the little talking heads from Snatcher, the 3DO version of Policenauts uses them still.  The pilot disc has some cool music selections, including stuff not really on any official soundtracks.

I bought the 3DO one from a now defunct site called WolfGames circa 2000 when there was a fan campaign to get Konami to localize it, that was successfull enough to get a reply on the US forums which was something to the extent of "Hideo Kojima does not approve of the Playstation version of Policenauts. The only versions he worked on were for NEC PC and 3DO and he does not want the international release of his game to be the Playstation version"

Yes,

I'll count Sherlock or JB Harold as games. But Magical Dinosaur Tour and the various girls discs I don't count as games. Much like I don't count the various adult movies on 3DO discs as games :P

So happy I modded my Saturn in the 90's.  I am also one that never played the PS1 translation.  I'll need to google and see how much is different with this version than the others .

Nice!  I see light gun and mouse support is added for the Saturn.

"The game centers on Jonathan Ingram, one of the five "Policenauts", astronauts with police training, assigned to ensure the safety of Beyond Coast, mankind's first fully functional space colony in the year 2013."

Glad to hear this has come out. I played through the patched PSX version and loved it. Not quite as much as Snatcher but I still really enjoyed it. These are my two favorite Kojima games ever. Damn shame we'll never get that Snatcher sequel since Kojima left and Konami has decided that Pachinko games are their future.

I picked up a 3rd party light gun that is PSX and Saturn. The copy of Policenauts I picked up a year or so ago came with an artbook that had me wanting. I didn't think this version would get patched. The lightgun works well as I remember the shooting with the controller a year or so ago not great but worth it to get past to keep playing the game. I am planning on getting back into this game more on my day off.

The SDatcher translation, policenauts for psx and part of the work on the msx version of snatcher was done by our same group of people at junkerhq.net

The PCE version was considered at some point, but this latest saturn patch was way too much work.

Although I'd love to see it, there's no plan for another project in the near future.

Although now that I clicked on nearly everything I think the next run I may playthrough it quicker. Great game. Thanks again to the transtation team. It was really fun playing through this game. I'm excited to play this, I own and have played through the Saturn version a couple of times in Japanese.  I was always a little bit miffed the Playstation version got translated since the Saturn one was my definitive version.  I'm still searching for a solution to play my old systems though, still haven't gotten a TV to play them on since I moved away from my last heavy CRT a couple years ago (just left it.)  Finding one on Craigslist is not a problem, but getting some help to move it is.  When I do figure it out, this translation is on my short list.

I've never noticed an increase in accuracy with the Guncon compared to the Stunner or Light Phaser. Not sure why it needs the composite video. Can it work without plugging that in?

I've not had any luck getting a Guncon working without the composite sync. I have noticed certain guncon games at times showed a crosshair where the gun was pointing on the screen ala a primative version of the wii remote sensor.

IIRC the point of the Guncon was to be different than the NES style gun, that it's, make the targets smaller so that missing is more likely. I don't think it's just sync, but I don't know how it actually works. At the time I assumed it used the composite connection as a comparator of some sort.

There was a pre-Guncon spec for PS guns but not many used it.

Well some of the games require such precision shots that a standard light gun would really be nearly impossible to be that accurate as some of the "VERY HARD" shots in point blank are probably limited to a few pixels.

And yeah, there was a Konami Justifier Lethal Enforcer gun, and there's a lot of other third party guns that try to mimmick one or both of the Playstation light gun standards.

Elemental Gearbolt is worth owning a light gun for.
