New SFC 2D fighting game from ex-SNK developers....

Cool. Are they doing a physical release?
I really hope these do a physical release for this, would be jawesome. I am very excited to see they picked SNES/SFC as the platform for their game.
Shoulda put this on the f***ing Saturn. Yeh.

If they do a physical I would much prefer a cartridge than a cd tbh.
But yeah Saturn would've been perfect especially considering the 2d powerhouse it is +6 button controller handed down from the gods.
It might just be me, but I get a darkstalkers/vampire hunter feeling from this game in a good way.
I'm seeing a very early build of a game here. Very encouraging, but not a final product.
And as for Saturn...well, the difference between Saturn and SFC is basically how many manhours you can come up with. Sure it's CD sound, but that just means you need to make better music somehow. And sure, way more animation can be stored, but who's going to draw it all?
I'd like to know more about this project when it becomes available.
My interest has been piqued. This might be something I buy, big fan of the genre.
A Kickstarter for a USA SNES physical version of the game.

Here's what the Super Famicom Box artwork will look like.

You're a little late. :P
My God that art sucks. That really really sucks.
I still don't understand this huge need for them to make a US version. It's a fighting game, not some epic RPG.
Did you forget about US-only Collectards?

If you look at the details of the kickstarter, you'll see that it's for smoke grey cart shells, gold plated cart shells and authentic looking SNES style cardboard box with manual.
nintendoage types pay top dollar for low quality
repros and are always looking to discover "hidden gems" (yet another game they've never heard of) to buy.
If the game was really complete by the time they started the SNES kickstarter, then it seems that the game really does run at a choppy framerate and is likely unplayable.
I backed because I wanted to give former SNK devs a shot on making a cool new SNES fighter, but all evidence points to this being totally underwhelming.
They should do LE numbered editions so the NA collectards will line up to pay premium.

That's pretty much what the kickstarter was for. The game was already completed and being published in Japan.
That USA-release kickstarter doesn't even look official. Almost looks like some nerds slapped together some shitty mockups in Photoshop and will ask the original dev/pub team permission to make a USA version if the kickstarter gets funded.
When I read "New SNES Fighting Game" I was ecstatic! I mean, seriously, I LOVE Fighting games with a passion and I also LOVE The SNES with a passion, but after reading your answers in this thread I got a little concerned... Has the game been released yet? If so has anyone here played it? Is it any good?

Is there any reason a game can't exist on a Saturn cartridge as opposed to a CD?

I don't think the JP version is released yet, it's still up for preoder at Play-Asia:

People have already posted photos after receiving it.
Still no quality game footage to see if it runs at a proper framerate.

There's a gameplay video in that page, and well, it looks fine enough to me! Albeit a little slow, but I don't mind it really...
Granted it's not gonna be beating the likes of Killer Instinct or Gundam Wing Endless Duel, but I welcome a new 16 bit fighting game with open arms ;3
I wish I could buy just a ROM of it though...
looks pretty cool tho. dont like the box art, just doesnt fit the theme to the game. looks more like im going to watch anime girls gone wild rather than play a fighting game

That video makes it look like it's running at 15fps.
This dude says it's "kind of choppy" fwiw. http://youtu.be/ltr4mtmRCCo

Looks no better than a B-tier effort from back in the day, honestly...
kinda sucks how they use the same music for many of the stages. animations look kinda choppy, bad translation too. " what the hell of you?" hahah

I'm glad that I didn't have to be the first person to say that.
The UI work is pitiful, and the lack of anything going on in the background, or even some simple background parallax on the floor, just makes it look half-hearted.
The folks at AtariAge are already starting to suspect that it wasn't really ex-SNK developers, but actually a Chinese team with a knock-off engine.
I have to agree. I think if it was truely ex-snk developers who worked on this game, i think it would have came out a lot better. SNK was known for their fighting games and this game definitely doesnt have that SNK look or charm to it

This was the most disheartening thing to me - I was considering supporting them, but the backgrounds look like photos they used a conversion software to dither down to shit, and the UI looks like it was 2% of their dev time.
Some nice effects, nice character art, but the animation speed ruins the look of them.
Was pretty sad when I saw the video, and wish they just put more time into it rather than selling it as is.
I few days ago, I made a mini review video about this game on yootoobz. I'll post it here;

This saddens me...
When I saw the other video I thought the choppiness were recording artifacts, I mean I've had that problem before in some of my videos, where the game ran fine but the recording was rubbish, and you know, I have a certain tolerance for low frame-rates given that I play PC-98 action games (with the erotic portions turned off mind you, I prefer my games not to have porn in them)
But this is a Super Nintendo game, and it's running choppier than the original Variable Geo on PC-98...
What happened??
Saw yakumo's review video and it's a really disappointing game, especially with the devs flaunting their ex-SNK work to promote it. I feel like they should have had targeted another platform entirely, the three year dev cycle shows how limiting the SNES was, they should have had picked PCE (I'm biased of course) or Genesis... they could have even made it for the NeoGeo (I'm assuming they didn't to avoid burning bridges with former employers and/or playmore/new SNK?).

I don't know about that, I mean, the SNES did have the best fighting games of that generation
and I'm totally not fangirling or anythingI can see why the PCE or the MD could have been better choices given the SNES's near crippled CPU, but I don't think we should blame the hardware for the incompetence of the devs...

Bad game? yes, awesome review? Even more yes!!!
well put together and down to the point!
Choppy framerate and lackluster graphics aside, the game also has bad sound quality, like a lower than normal bitrate

I like 2nd rate fighting games from that era, and this games doesn't seem like it deserves that description. Agree with all you said, not good at all.

The SNES is supposed to be difficult/convoluted to develop for. The "best" games and games that ran well with large highly animated sprites are different things.
With that said, all signs point to the "former SNK devs" pitch as being a bogus marketing ploy and it was made by a Chinese company that steals assets and makes bootlegs.

Yeah, that's something I held off on mentioning earlier, I mean, the music is not awful or anything, but it should have sounded SO much better...
Heck, I can make better SNES music than that, which btw will run in real hardware, so there's no reason for a commercially released game like that to have inferior sound than what an amateur like me can produce...
Yep! Just listening to the music on this game makes my ears hurt. Looks like a budget fighter forsure lol
Saru, you gonna have to let me play it to see how bad it truely is!
For only $500 I will send an email full of developer tips on how to program an amazing fighting game. These tips are direct from ex-SNK developers, so I am practically giving away the development knowledge at this price.
