I just finished watching the new Star Wars.
In a spoiler free sharing of general thoughts on the movie, it was less of a rehash than the last numbered one. But it was also generally less entertaining.
What are everyone else's thoughts.
I accidentally ran into spoilers on reddit :/ what was there looked interesting
Be careful on the net!
Hopefully episode 8 is better than force awakens, which was a fun movie but didn't do anything new, with a really boring main character

Better in the sense that it is more original. Yes
Better in a sense that it is less boring? No.
I don't care about the new characters and the charm and magic of Star Wars seems missing from this movie,
Star Wars: Marvel Edition
Spoiler: there's hardly anything to spoil
They need to put Rian Johnson in a rocket and launch that prick into the sun for what he did here.

*SPOILER ALERT*
....tit-milk.
I thought it was just ok. I think I liked Force Awakens better. I don't like how they just killed people off. I'm actually growing quite tired of people being killed off in movies, just so the threat can seem real or whatever. Some don't barely even get a mention after they die, like Ackbar. And maybe one of the only new characters I actually care about, Snoke, doesn't get any backstory. At least, not yet. I want to know more about him, what was he doing during the earlier episodes, is he a Sith, or a Dark Jedi or what? Where does he fit in all this? He is the one that seems like the real threat, not Kylo.
I was pretty disappointed with it. Force Awakens was much better. Personally I'd put this at the bottom of the list of Star Wars movies.

Can't be worse than ep 1. Nothing is.
***SPOILER ALERT***
I'm just glad to see they brought the Ewoks back.
It was a movie with explosions and a lot of weird creatures. Wish it had some cooler vistas and environments; the casino was shot so closely and so far out you didn't get a good feel for it. There were also a lot of times where I had a hard time understanding the topography/architecture where it seemed they were teleporting around from scene to scene; it didn't feel connected at times.
Also, weird hair dye job and alient tit milk - those things happen

the casino was horrible. that was too "prequel" to me.
and uh, are we really overlooking the most terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, Leia floating in space? WTF???
and Luke called Jedi a religion. which i found strange.
the campy jokes, poe acting "on hold" was so un-star wars. i got angry 10 mins into the movie and it never recovered.

Yeah, boarderline spoilerie here but yeah that lea shit was bonkers.
It just didn't feel like Star Wars. It felt like a parody in places.
I'm super forgiving of Star Wars, as evidenced by the fact that I even love the prequels. I've never been so disappointed in a Star Wars movie. I really hope my mind will change over time because I like this the least out of any, by a long way. It was dumb, badly written and disrespectful.

That really pissed me off.
I believe they answered some of this in one of these books:
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=star+wars+before+the+awakening
I remember reading somewhere that Snoke was some kind of collector and a bit of a fanboy of the empire and whatnot.
Quote from: bob on 12/18/2017, 01:42 PMLeia floating in space? WTF???
I snorted so loud in the theatre when that scene happened that I got shushed. lol
I just took it as that was Didnee's way of "paying homage."
Shouldn't have been in the film, though.

I always had the utmost respect for you.
Until you defended the prequels.

SRSLY, though...I am ignoring this thread and I'm watching the new film next week with my family.
I hope it doesn't suck as bad as folks have indicated.

Yeah, what a shame.
I wonder if tempering my expectations will make me less likely to be annoyed?
That is how I tend to operate...
Also, I find it hilarious that I have loved the recent Voltron reboot (every season)...yet, Star Wars has struggled to be more than a passing interest to me.

I came in with low expectations and was still disappointed.
I personally liked it. Definitely better than the mess that was rogue one and of course the prequels
Still had plenty of issues though, such as both romances and the small amount of extras. But it is still more enjoyable than all the mediocre, formulaic marvel movies coming out recently.
On a side note, the trailer for the Jurassic world sequel looked awful, with zero plot. Holy shit!
Quote from: guest on 12/19/2017, 02:23 PMI personally liked it. Definitely better than the mess that was rogue one
Weird, I think Rogue One is the best of the Disney Star Wars movies.
I'm about 50/50 on this release. I think there were elements I was disappointed in, but was pretty happy to see a few scenes. It's somewhere between the prequels (horrid) and the originals. If you're a fan, you should definitely see it.
Yeah I'm with josh, rouge one felt the most star wars to me. the Prequels are all about preference in my mind . . . I actually quite like episode one. . . but most people are either love em or hate em.
the Marvel movies are just "look what I animated" no plot, no story, bad acting ect.
Jurassic World has no where to go, hey sucked all the nostalgia of the first one in that last one, and the plot was rather forced...I have low expectations for next fall.
That being said I'm going to wait and see this one for free somewhere down the line. Like i did the last one in the series, and hope I enjoy it.
I would love it if some original movies came out...I haven't seen a movie I was enthralled by in about 5-6 years.
Go see Coco. The new Disney/Pixar movie. I honestly think it's one of the best movies of the year. :)
The recent blade runner was outstanding. Had the atmosphere of the original but also a much better plot

Yeah, I liked Rogue One more than ______, too.
I wasn't particularly interested in seeing the new Star Wars film that is out now, but this thread has made me very curious about it (to compare notes).
But, I must confess that I am going to probably see "The Room" first. Then Star Wars.
Rogue One has so far still be my favorite of these new movies, aside from the crazy CGI stuff.
CGI casino scene in Last Jedi was totally lame. They get thrown in jail all because of a parking violation.
New Blade Runner was fucking great, maybe my favorite movie this year.
hated the casino

I don't think I could pick between Last Jedi and Rogue One as which I like better. They're both weird and entertaining, yet make me angry in different ways. lol
That shirt is fun. <3
Last Jedi just made so many questionable plot choices which can't be taken back, and didn't pay off on any of the intriguing questions Force Awakens set up. I don't care at all about seeing ep. 9 now since almost all the characters I care about are dead (and even most of their nameless comrades for that matter), and the rules and themes of the world now hardly make any sense.
Then again, I was pretty bothered when the Republic was destroyed in Force Awakens, and then they immediately cut to scenes of Rey and BB-8 lost in the woods. I was thinking, "Doesn't anyone else care that probably trillions of people and the seat of power they fought to take back in the original trilogy was just obliterated?" What are they even fighting for anymore?
Of course Last Jedi was a beautifully shot movie with amazing action and effects, and Mark Hammill's performance was excellent. Guess that's all that matters, right?
I just wanted to know the identity of Rey's parents. But if they can't make the payoff of that reveal good anyway, then smarter to keep it a mystery, heh.
EDIT: Mark Hamill "hurts" for everything that has happened to Luke. This is spoily: http://youtu.be/Mdm8rpv045U

It kinda feels like either Kylo was lying to her or it was perhaps another immaculate conception like with Anakin. That scene when Rey falls into the island anus and ends up looking at herself when asking questions makes it feel this way. She came from nothing. Hmm.
I can't help but feel something was missing from it... Can't quite put my finger on it... Lemme think... Ahh yes!! Darth Vader!!! When you absolutely positively must go Samuel Jackson on the enemy... http://youtu.be/wxL8bVJhXCM Star Wars just isn't the same without him... Someone to deliver memorable lines like, "Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, Director." A villain with some wit! Kylo just looks like a weebo or hipster to me, heh heh.
Saw it last night. I honestly didn't see anything worth the level of anger this seems to be getting from some corners. It made some surprising choices, sure, but I think it generally betrayed my expectations in an interesting way. This may count as a mild spoiler, but I felt like it had the theme of a new generation taking the reigns, which is appropriate seeing as that's what's happening with the current Star Wars movies.

This movie was a beautiful trainwreck in a lot of places. It was a solid ride but I probably could have waited for the home video release.
The third movie could change the overall feel of this one, though. Not everyone loved Empire when it came out originally: https://io9.gizmodo.com/heres-how-fans-reacted-to-the-empire-strikes-back-in-19-1821551259

I'm sure good ol' JJ will bring it back to safeville and please the fans so much it'll be sickening with episode 9.
I remember when I was little I didn't like Empire a whole lot. Over the years I'd revisit the trilogy and it became my favorite along with Hope. When I was little Jedi was my fav. BC stupid kid lol.
