yes, they stole it and messed it up just as much as it's possible

Hah, awesome find! I really want to play that game now, looks cool.

Those graphics look really bad.  Sometimes more colors ≠ better.  Plus the vertically oriented screen destroys the game.  Who wants to play games on a cell phone, anyway?  I barely even want to talk on mine.

And how is this a remake of "Kung Fu Master"?  The sprites look like they were lifted straight out of Vigilante.

But Kung Fu Master.  Now, there's a classic.  According to Wikipedia, KFM was supposedly the very first beat-em up, but I'm trying to think if there were any others before that.  I thought of Mechner's Karateka, but they were both released in 84.  Hmmm...

Yeah, this has nothing to do with Kung Fu Master. And you're right, the sprites are totally rippied from Vigilante and slightly altered (at times the pallette was merely changed, at other times it looks like they created new characters in style with the old ones -- like the fatman wielding a knife).

This is friggin' lame because it's a commercial product. Of course, like Keranu, I totally want to see how this thing plays! :) Oh, I'm so pathetic.

Definately a lift-job of Vigilante's sprites, and I made sure to write a review stating that fact. Of course, it'll probably never appear.

Vigilante is kinda like a spiritual successor to KFM.  You have a guy that looks and dresses similar to the hero in KFM, they're both by IREM, and they're both walk-along beat-em-ups with a lot of popcorn enemies.

Hurts me to say, but I played the original arcade version of Vigilante on MAME once (never played the TG16 one), and I wasn't really impressed. Mainly because it was a tad too hard, and that lowered the fun factor alot for me.

i haven't any problem with the difficulty level of the pce vigilante before. may be the last stage is some kind of hard.

DUDE! Post your reviews here :)

I know this thread hasn't generated too much interest, but I'm not the only one who would enjoy reading it :).

I think the designers were being disingenuous by conveniently omitting that they stole from Vigilante... they make it sound like the progression goes from Kung Fu (Spartan X)  --> Kung Fu 72

instead of

Spartan X (Kung Fu) --> Vigilante --> Vigilante Remix (Kung Fu 72)

Until Chris posted, I didn't know that Kung Fu / Spartan X (NES / FMC) was known also known as "Kung Fu Master" ...

Yeah, I thought it was always "Kung Fu Master" in the arcades.  It threw me off a little when I saw the NES release, because I thought, "Why didn't say use the arcade name?"

Actually, the first day this thread started I read it and laughed SO HARD I could not bring myself to post anything. The title, the comments...

Folks nonchalantly talking about how they casually lifted sprites from Vigilante like it was no big thing. I brought up screenshots of this game and Vigilante in another tab and kept switching back and forth and it just fueled my laughter further.

QuoteAnd you're right, the sprites are totally rippied from Vigilante and slightly altered (at times the pallette was merely changed, at other times it looks like they created new characters in style with the old ones -- like the fatman wielding a knife).
Gold. Pure gold.

I like how in that one TG-16 promo video(Power Up?), they did a side by side comparison between Kung Fu NES and China Warrior (but no Genesis comparison ).

They should've used Vigilante instead of China Warrior. But I guess they didn't want to seem like the TG-16 had a similar game with only updated graphics.

MUGEN!

Ironically, at one point in time I wanted to make the character in Vigilante into a MUGEN character...never did though. Pretty much just stuck with backgrounds (anyone remember sn0ball's mugen page? that was me).

TANGENT ALERT!

Since no one's mentioned it yet, Kung Fu NES/Kung Fu Master is a movie-to-game adaptation of one of Jackie Chan's earlier flicks. The USA is fully unaware of this fact because back then Jackie Chan's popularity didn't go anywhere past Asia.

(Ahhh the dreaded Jackie Chan name change scenario)

1. Kwai Tsan Tseh > Spartan X (Japanese name, in which the Arcade/Famicom game was made from, soon to KFM/KF-NES) > Wheels on Meals (USA name)

Not a tangent! Ninja, you know I love stuff like this :). Wheels on Meals, now *that* would have been a great name for the video game franchise.

Indeed, Wheels on Means is a sweet name.

How about this one? Remember the NES game "Phantom Fighter"?

This too is based on a movie.

Geung si sin sang > Reigen Doushi (I think, I know the Famicom version was called that) > Mr. Vampire

Phantom Fighter was also bastardized with the cut scenes being removed so the film origins weren't obvious.

Not only do I remember the game, but I remember the adverts and box art for it. I would have never guessed that these games (Spartan X, PF) were movie licenses.

Another thing KFM and Vigilante have in common is that the original arcade versions for both were distributed by Data East in North America.

Do we know of any other Turbo games that were ripped off besides Vigilante?
