Title: emu on PS3?
Post by: kenomac78 on 09/03/2007, 04:11 AM
So some NES emu's are popping up for the PS3 already. it sounds like it could be a dream come true for many emu enthusiasts. as sony is being pretty hands off with the use of linux and endless space in the HD.

so naturally the big question is, will  we ever see magic engine, or any other emulator pop up for ps3? either ported or from scratch? im really interested to see what could happen. as the wii is great and all with its tg16 offereings but without and CD games, it will never be prefect. it would be great to  keep all my games on the HD and keep the originals packed away safely.

it'd be a great idea to bug the creators of magic engine in their forum, haha. I'd like to believe that there will be a turbografx emu for the console be it magicengine or something else. So, you say that there are already emus for the ps3 in existance? by any chance can i get a link or something?

i dont know where to find them. all i have seen is youtube clips

like this

http://youtu.be/RsQOr-vNDsg&mode=related&search=

but since its linux, i ssume anything exisiting already can be ported over, or just tweaked? i never learned anything about that stuff! but it woul be sweet to run cd roms  from the disc or ripping the disc to the HD

ya, it would be cool. I'd like play all the emulators on it with the wireless controller, that would be truly bad-ass. It would be a free unlimited virtual console, haha.

from what I've gathered at magicengineforums is that magic engine emulator can run in linux using wine. Teh future looks bright for us kenomac

You'd be far better served with a modded Xbox. It costs about 1/6 of what a PS3 costs, and PCE emulation is already very advanced. It plays ISOs from the HD.

Compatibility is just so-so, but the same will be true with the PS3 for several years, most likely.

Plus, owning a beat-up Xbox you bought from some dude for $50 because needed weed money make you feel far less like a complete tool than owning a $600 POS3 does.

I was pricing a possible trip to the UK, and France for next year, and the lowball prices I'm looking at for plane ticket across the Atlantic, and 7 nights in a hotel are in the area if $1200. The price of two PS3s. At that point it really hit me just how bad of a deal the PS3 is. I'm going to Europe, and never owning a PS3, is basically what I decided.

At least with the $600 Neo Geo you had great games to play.

That's pretty cool actually that he got Marvel Vs Capcom running.  I have a few old Windows games from the mid 90s, I wonder if they would work under Wine on PS3?  Shit I might have to give that a try, I had them booted up on my Xbox linux but they ran really slow.

apparently wine doesn't work on the ps3  #-o this is because wine is only for x86 processors and the ps3 uses ppc. Sorry for getting your hopes up guys. On a lighter note; I've heard of a way to get wine working, I'll have to check it out before I make any promises.

Well, I got xubuntu running on the ps3  :D I'm actually doing this post from it right now, haha. Pretty cool, huh? Ya, but I've been having trouble getting emulators to work since I'm root impaired   :( Linux on here runs at a decent speed. Internet is fast using firefox with dsl.

i could go the xbox route except that id prefer to do as little modding as possible to get things working, plus modding the xbox will disable all the fun online stuff it has to offer.

plus i dont know anyone who is feeling and will dump off the boxo for 50

I got mednafen working but only an old ass version was available and its really slow :( the good news is that using linux on here is just like on a pc. So, I guess thats what its purpose will be for now. I will still try to get better emulators tho.

Xbox modding is damn simple. Plus, it won't kill your Live. You just put a switch in there that turns the chip on and off and don't dare turn it on while connected to Live.

Well...I guess we all know different sorts of people.

Turbo D just look on craigslist.com for a pre-modded Xbox, you can find ones with upgraded hard drives already loaded with emulators and every game for like $100-$150.  Seriously that's the best way to go and will save you hours and hours of wasted time messing around trying to get stuff to work (unless you enjoy it that is, sometimes its fun to try and get stuff working yourself).

Ya, I do enjoy it, haha. But I also will be looking for a modded xbox. I've been wanting one ever since I heard how great it was with emulation :) Plus my one of my friends has been bugging me to get one so I can whip his ass on halo 2, haha.

I'm hoping that they'll get some kind of HD loader working for PS3 that works with PS1/2 games, so I can just store loads of them on my HDD.......unless there's already something like that?

Amazing. For once, I actually agree with you.
