Title: Weight of a Hori Stick
Post by: juggernaut on 12/10/2007, 06:46 PM
Hi guys.
I have received a shippingbill from Shoppingmall Japan. I think its pretty steep considering the goods are only 2 sticks.
Can any of you supply me with a weight of one stick, so i can calculate the shippingprice myself? Thanks.

I'll get back to you in a bit on that.  Boxed or unboxed?  Which shipping method?

According to my bathroom scales(hahah) it is just shy of 3lbs without a box.  Hopefully D-lite can get a better reading.

How much are they asking just for shipping?

I use SMJ alot and find their shipping very reasonable, although I do use SAL. EMS will be a lot more expensive.

Yeah... what is the shipping like.

I was thinking of trying out a few auctions over there.

$80 to Denmark. I have purchased through Shoppingmall before, no problem there. Just this time i think the shipping is killing the deal :(

seems a bit expensive. I know that I've paid around $54 to $60 shipping for a console from japan  :-k Maybe the size of 2 boxed sticks is what is making it so high. Those sticks are rather big when boxed. Idk. Maybe you scored such a good deal that he is sticking it to you on shipping, haha. Sellers DO do that you know.

Remember, this is the shipping from SMJ to Denmark. Not the japanese seller to SMJ. Therfore it has to be SMJ that has calculated the prize. I may have to mail SMJ and ask them about this issue.

I bet that $80 most likely includes the S&H cost from the seller to SMJ.

I've never dealt with them. Is that $80 on top of their normal fee?

I've never dealt with SMJ, but the last time I used a middle-man service it was Mail Order Japan (MOJ). Here the list of things MOJ charged me when I bought something.

local shipping cost (seller to middle-man in japan)
international shipping cost
transaction fee
commission fee
paypal fee (if you use PP)
repackaging fee (only if you purchase multiple item and want to shipping in 1 box)

that $80 is for just the shipping to Europe.  The way SMJ does the billing is two parts, one for all the Japan side, the other for the shipping to you directly.  Did it go to the US first or are you having the sticks sent directly from Japan?

For a comparison and as reference, look at the typical shipping price of a Duo from Japan to the US.  It's always around $60-70 and a packed Duo weighs ~6 1/2 lbs.  The two sticks boxed weighs about the same.

The items were bought and stored in Japan. The price might be high due to the psychical size of the package, and not so much the weight? They are shipped by plane, and the size could actually matter in this case. I'm not sure about it though.

Dude, I want a package with psychical size! I can impose my mental powers on everyone, then.

And the answer is.... 3 lbs 15 oz

EACH, boxed.

They are, in layman's terms, heavy bastards.

They may be heavy bastards but by nowadays standards, they're still really good arcade sticks. I love using them for shooting or fighting games. The Hori Multi Stick just feels like a toy, though. It's so cheap that it doesn't compare with it's counterpart so to those who're intersted in getting one of those, make the right choice ;)

For whatever price your paying it must be extreme. Would it be cheaper if you got a HRAP2 and PS2 -> PCE adaptor?

I like the HRAP2. It's heavy and sturdy, and you can easily swap the innards with authentic japanese arcade parts. I swapped the joystick and buttons in my HRAP2 with Seimitsu parts which wasn't too hard, no soldering needed. Cool thing since it's a PS2 joystick, theres all sorts of adaptors available for other consoles, including the PCE.

Thx for the service Dean. I must crawl to the altar on my bleeding knees, forgiving myself for making such a mindblowing purchase. I have to accept the shipping and so my life ended (when the wife hears about it;))

don't feel bad juggernaut, I too have been slapped in the face with insane shipping. Its always horrible the first time it happens. You're all like; I guess I didn't get a good deal after all.

Tell SMJ to use SAL in the future then  #-o
