Last one! At least from me! I'm not exhaustively doing a 2, 3 or 4 meg war- too many titles! =D>
Anywho- I'm going with Neutopia II here- even though Darius Plus has additional powers!
Another one that's EASY PEASY. No contest.
Darius.
No contest - Neutopia II.
contest - nat vs. Necromancer
No contest - Raiden.
Neutopia II ...surprise :)
Is Neutopia II really that good? I own it, I played only about 5 minutes of it, but it was too much of a Zelda ripoff for me to handle.
I like it..but my main genre is RPG's (and SRPG..etc.).

Zelda ripoff? Damn right, but it's the
best Zelda ripoff.
And having a zelda ripoff is great when you like Zelda games but don't have a system that played them. :P
Necro FTW :)

But isn't the original Zelda still better than any of the rip-offs? I'm only basing this assumption off common sense, I haven't actually played either of the Neutopia games for any great length of time. It seems to me that I'd be thinking "Boy, what a cheap copy of a gaming classic" or "Gee, I already played and enjoyed this game years ago on the NES" the entire time thus eliminating any chance of gleaning even a moment of enjoyment out of them.
It's like if SEGA ripped off Bonk's Adventure with a game called Bonehead's Quest or something. It just wouldn't be any good. The "magic" would be lost.
I plan to give the Neutopia games a good run at some point down the road, but my few minutes spent with them has pushed them pretty far down the list.
I have to go with Raiden.

Nat- IMO both Neutopias actually play better than the original Zelda-
Of course- Zelda is iconic- some of that music is downright hypnotizing- I'm not saying the Neutopias are better games- just saying they "play" better.
Both of the Neutopias get meatier the longer you play them- they both start off a little annoying as you waste your bombs on doors where the only thing you get are the most obvious of clues.
Just like in Zelda though- these games really shine in the dungeons.

Only if you think the same way about A Link to the Past and all other true sequels (those with similar gameplay), as Neutopia II isn't using the same story or world/dungeon layouts. The play mechanics are similar to Zelda, but Neutopia II looks better, is more expansive, and is on the Turbo, which automatically gives it 12 bonus points. I can't say that Neutopia and Neutopia II are epic quests that everyone must play immediately; just keep 'em on the list and play 'em before Neutopia III is released. In other words, before 2023. <-- poking T.O.R. with a stick. :P
I would def. say Neutopia is a must-play for the late 80s fan. It's awesome. It's a TG16 must for absolute sure.
6-MEG? Now that's just WAY too much power!
Neutopia II is the best!
But for the record- Neutopia one borrowed from NES Zelda, and SNES Zelda III borrowed from Neutopia.
Raiden + Nuetopia II = unstoppable
you forgot BubbleGum Crash English version...6megs.
Darius Plus.
Neutopia II is crap.
Neutopia II had fun (if flawed) fake Zelda action. What could be more fun than a flawed fake?
Darius Plus easy. 8)
Raiden with ease!!
Raiden!
I have a problem with almost every port of Raiden. They're fun, but I played enough arcade Raiden that I just couldn't stand the downgrade of any of the home ports. The only home version of Raiden I like is the PS1 Raiden Project.
So while it's a good game, it's not as good as many other TG-16 shooters. Home consoles just weren't meant to play Raiden in full glory, and that's a game that needed the full glory to be good. When you distill it down to something weaker for home consoles it just loses the magic.
Raiden is a rip off of Tiger Heli, so by default Darius wins :)
Raiden biatches!!! :P
Shocked at all the Raiden love. Raiden is mediocre at best.
QuoteShocked at all the Raiden love. Raiden is mediocre at best.
Are you really surprised though? :P I've always had a love for Raiden, but I have a love for tough shooters. Raiden wasn't revolutionary in terms of gameplay, but it's a classic shmup. It's also one of the better translations of the game, IMHO. I still need to get Super Raiden on Super CDROM2.
Here's a comparison of all the "16 bit" systems:

Yeah, kinda. I realize as far as arcade-correctness goes, Raiden is a great port. The game is (as someone else mentioned) a rip-off of Tiger Heli and is just kind of bland. Nothing exciting. It's better than bottom-of-the-barrel scum like Ordyne, but there are about 100 PCE/Turbo shooters that are better.
Thanks for the link though, that's an interesting comparison piece.

I guess I should have said, "Are you surprised that
I love Raiden?". You know, because of my love for the game that starts with "X"? :P
Yeah, I never thought about the Tiger Heli similarities before, but it's so obvious now that I think about it. I always compared it to Sky Shark. Sky Shark is pretty much the same game, but you're flying a bi-plane instead of a futuristic jet. I agree though, there are many better shooters, but when just comparing the 6 meg cards Raiden is a front runner for sure.
Yeah, that's a pretty good comparison piece. I just can't get over how ugly the Jaguar's side bar is. :-& To me that makes the game unplayable. [-(

You got that right. Most of those games are uninteresting crap, Darius and Raiden are the only games even approaching "good." Darius is fantastic though.
I'm still on the fence about N2... I'll give it a good run someday.
You know, it occurred to me that they didn't do much with 6 meg chips once they started producing them.

That comparison makes the Turbo version out to be weak compared to the Genesis and SNES ports, while I've only heard the opposite about it over the years.

Yeah, I was just reading it over again and you're right. He's really reluctant to give any props to the Duo (i.e. "On the Duo, animation has again been slashed, but compared to the Genesis version, this brightly lit, and colorful effort looks better than expected.") lol? Was that supposed to be a compliment?
Though he is probably right about the sound on the Turbo version not going through all the audio channels. It might explain why Raiden was the only game my sound-issue-ridden Duo could play without the audio cutting out.
But he praises the Jaguar up and down, yet from the screenshots you wouldn't think it. The Jaguar screenshot looks like when Kits goes crazy with the gaussian blur. https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=4799.0 (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=4799.0)
Anyway, normally the Turbo gets wins out in these comparisons.

The pce raiden is with out doubt the best version of those three, the genesis is second, its very good port, the snes version sucks.
The reviewer talked allot about missing animations, this is definitely where the pce version shines, with at least twice as many frames on the explosions, the list goes on and on about missing detail and animations, the pce raiden really is an awesome version for its time.
One of the things I've always heard about the PCE Raiden is that the soundtrack was very well done. I just previewed the sound rip in ME and it uses 5 sound channels for the music.
I doubt that the arcade version had any "channels of the audio" that "the meager Turbo music failed to pick up on".
I'm pretty sure Legend of the Valkyrie is not 6megabit
I don't think namco produced any HUcards over 4meg which is a shame cause I sure did wish Dragon Saber was .. at the time it was being produced :(
