Title: Duo R controller port problem
Post by: COUNT SMRIFNACK on 05/03/2008, 04:26 PM
My Duo R has a controller port problem.  First off, the controller port is pretty loose.  It has quite a bit of movement to it, more than either of my TGs.  The problem is that when you hold up/left on the directional pad, and move the controller connection up and down where it plugs into the Duo, the game pauses/unpauses, in accordance with the up and down movement of the connection.  It this a soldering issue, that can be fixed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I opened it up just now to take a look.  This is what I found on the controller port......

The three large solders in the middle on the bottom are from the controller port.  The one on the left's solder is broken.  When I plugged a controller in and moved the connection up and down the gap in the broken solder got larger/smaller.  Should I just heat up the solder an melt it a bit or add some?

Heat it up to reflow the old solder and add a very small amount of new solder just to seal the deal. You should be good to go.

O.k., turns out the large solder is only one of the three solders that hold down the metal cover over the port.  Fixing it did nothing.  So I got out the ol' magnifying glass and found three small solders above it that were slightly questionable.  Boy they were small as hell, but I got them.

Works like a charm now.  the previous owner must have jerked the shit out of the controller cord.  Someone should have told him not to treat it like his man junk [-X

The yellow outlined solder is the one for the metal cover, this affected nothing.  The red ones are the ones that after re-soldering, the problem was fixed.

Thank you.  I just couldn't stand having to send off both systems for repairs at the same time, so I had to take a shot at fixing it.
