Title: Why does Street Fighter II have an apostrophe?
Post by: Joe Redifer on 05/28/2008, 03:06 AM
In all incarnations of Street Fighter II that I can recall, it is always shown as Street Fighter II'.  Why?  Somebody really needs to go to Japan and teach them English.

It's something I've always wondered as well. It really stuck in my head the first time I saw that PCE SF2 commercial where the guy pronounces it "Stareet Fighta Too DASH !!"

hmmm, so that apostrophe is supposed to be a dash?  :-k I always wondered why they called it dash in the commercial too! I also want that art book they talk about in the commercial!

Wow, they even confuse dashes with apostrophes.  I can't believe Japan even has electricity.  But still, why "dash"?

It's not all incarnations of Street Fighter II.  The only games to use the "dash" are Street Fighter II' (more popularly known in the US as "Champion Edition") and Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting (a.k.a. Turbo).  The other titles in the series just contain "Street Fighter II", without the apostrophe.

I can't come up with a specific example off the top of my head, but IIRC I've seen the "dash" before in other Japanese titles. [Edit: one does come to mind now -- Street Fighter Zero 2', the home port of Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha with a few changes  :P]

As for why the apostrophe is called a "dash" by Japanese people -- who knows.

From what I understand the 'dash' means 'extra'.

Its called Street Fighter II' because its basically the same thing as Street Fighter II but with a little bit more; playable bosses, same character 1P vs 2P, and some minor balance tweaks, mainly.
