Title: Turbo Duo RGB mod to PS1 LCD - 56k beware
Post by: Duo_R on 09/02/2008, 01:47 AM
So I tapped into the RGB this weekend:

added a PS2 AV port so I could access everything I wanted from the duo and then hook it up to this:

What do I think of the mod? The picture looks great, sounds is also very clear on the PS1 LCD. There is one issue that I have so far. If background colors are cooler colored, I can notice some vertical lines:

Now I don't have any caps or resistors or amp. Could that have something to do with it? Could it be the cables I used or maybe where I ran the lines? I wanted to install the new AV port at the back on the Duo so I had to run along the board:

Those Vertical Lines have come up in just about every method I have used to amp the RGB.I Have tried the standard amp with the transistors, using a Cxa1645p as amp,and this method http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2351.msg20379#msg20379 (http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2351.msg20379#msg20379). The last method produces the best results and barely shows the lines, though if you look hard enough they still show up in certain situations(Konami Logo). I put all my systems through a scart component converter, and this is the only one that has any problem.

Interesting mod, but why would you want to play games on a 5" screen (nonportable)?

This is the only RGB monitor that I have (since I live in the U.S.) so it was my test prior to ordering Jrok 4.1 component converter. However - I am concerned that I would notice the lines even more on the big screen? Strange because according to Lawrence on Gamesx.com, I shouldn't be seeing any lines on the RGB for Duo (he said it was almost perfect output besides brightness). Do you think it is how my cables are being ran (maybe the 6280 chip is the culprite since I ran my wires near there)?

This monitor has been a great tool on testing RGB and also helping me work on my sound issue (I keep the Duo at my workstation while bench testing). My NES to duo pad also is a good test controller (keep the precious turbo accessories from the work station).

Thanks - do you have a diagram in English on how to build that? I used babelfish to try and read but something was getting "lost in translation."

So I was talking with another member and they wanted more details on this PS1 LCD. I have a setup that allows me to use any RGB signal. So whether a PS2, Turbo Duo, Saturn, Fx - it will all work if you have a DB9 installed on your system. Also - for those that don't want to hack your PS1 - a quick secret there were no internal hacks on this PS1 screen. In fact, I can unscrew the screen from the base and plug it back into a PS1 system. I used the same idea on how it plugs into a PS1. The stand not only serves to hold upright, but also has an AV port that I hacked from a PS1, and it has a cable plugged into that that sends the signal to a DB9. For hooking to a PS2 you can also see my custom DB9 to PS1 AV cable. Right now I am using this to hook up to my Duo. I have a PS2 AV port on the back of my Duo (but it isn't permanent, just for RGB testing purposes).

What the PS1 LCD needs - RGB, L and R Audio, Composite Sync, 5+ (I got this from AV port), and grounds (on two pins). I used the Gamesx to figure out how to wire it up.

I don't have a shot of the PS1 Stand by itself, but it has one of these on the backside of it:

The PS1 screen slides right into that, then a cable routes the correct pins I needed to a DB9

DB9 that hooks up to my PS2 (And my Duo with PS2 AV port)
