:-D hurrah
I hope I don't ruin it.
Sweet page music, dewd!
Neato! Once you get the game play stuff down, I hope you redo the graphics; a classic mode and a next-gen mode would be killer.
very cool- you mind if I put a link on the front page of gamescape?

Congratulation !
I don't know this title but I'm always happy to see new games on my lovely PCE !!
Awesome. I am already liking what I see. I hope this project continues!
I plan to continue it until it is finished!
The plan currently is to have digitized ADPCM samples for sound fx, and cd audio tracks for background music.
So, the game will be distributed on CD when done!
Id like to have PSG music.... but that is a whole learning experience I have to take on first :-D
just awesome! I have been waiting for this game forever to be remade for one console or another. I look forward to playing it. Thank you Thank you Thank You! Need any play testers im your man! LOL
Well once it is in a playable state ill definitely give you a holler to test it. :)

Awesome, thanks for doing this. =D>
:-D
I honestly didn't think anyone would be that thrilled for Berzerk, lol!
shows how much I know! I was just doing it because I like it! :-D
I think it's more of the fact that somebody, anybody, is making new software for our favorite console. :D
Well, last night after downin some coke (The pop NOT the powder! >_<), I cranked out some stuff.
Wall collisions, Leaving room detection, lazer hitting walls......
also, I polished up the lazer collision so that you can do the happy strategic sniping past walls and using them for cover >_<
The lazer has pixel perfect accuracy! They ride along walls !
wooo.
Next up: diagonal shooting
Also: I figured Ill ask everyone: Death animations........
Should I do:
Palette swapping so he blinks and flashes
make him shrink down and bloop away kinda like pacman
...Something else?
I was also thinking of maybe painting new graphics for death that make him look like a skeleton while hes being electrocuted....
Didn't he blink in the original? I'd use that if you are going for accuracy but seeing an electrocuted skeleton would be sweet  .
i was going to do a pallete swap that inverts colors so he looks skeletal :)
like an xray machine sorta?
Blinking electrocuted skeleton for the win!
I did a palette swap idea......sorta like... he flashes between normal, and then a pallete consisting of all white (except for black. It stayed black), so..... it makes him blink.
I don't like it.
I will try painting a decent skeletal doom animation.....but I am artistically challenged,....
an update anyways: Fixed up the lazer collisions/wall collisions completely. They can cruise RIGHT along a wall. even on diagonals. Tile collision is updated too!
Now I am working on his death sequence, obviously.
:)
*Bump*
err. not really since its the top thread..
the WIP has some updates

I kinda like this freewebs business. Maybe I'll get a 5$/month account!

I started making the sprites look better. The hero looks immensely better! :-D
once I finish the sprite sheet ill post it up.

Indeed it is. Getting the big major final collision routine of death and destruction finished (tonight hopefully), and then the rest should be polish.
The robots are officially taunting. =D>
Can't wait! Is there a tentative release date yet?
Quote from: Arjak on 06/25/2009, 06:28 PMCan't wait! Is there a tentative release date yet?
Well, i am hoping it is done by July like my original guess, and then pressed and ready sometime in august. Unless anything major comes up that turns into a speedbump, right now its all just chugging along and falling into place.
Im working on more music for the game this weekend. The title screen looks awesome.....
check out the blog for more infos :)
Update! I posted some stuff at the blog (that I dont even know if people read... lol)
anyway, The game will probably be finished a little more into august (Im supposed to vacation at the beach at end of the month).
on that note.... the game is nearly done anyways. Tweaking the enemy AI and tweaking the sounds.
It is playable now, its just a little too easy still. Runs great on the Duo-R.
I'll post a demo of the game soon I promise. Itll have the title screen, musics, sounds, and playability.
It will be a definite DEMO though.
cool ..
You posted a while back wondering what the robots should say. I figure they should say all the old lines from the original arcade game, as well as some new ones.
Of course, maybe I should have posted this idea earlier...
Anyway, I can't wait to play this! I liked the arcade game, and this looks like a wonderful tribute. You definitely have a potential buyer in me!
The voices say similar/just about the same stuff really. :)
I also decided the sound effects in general need to be sampled. merely because the original arcade one did, and if the PCE one just used the PSG for lazers, .... then the original would have superior sfx. I dont think so!

Them being signed would be a nice touch. I'm not sure how many you will be having made but maybe you can do something along the lines of what Mindrec did with Meteor Blaster DX. You could either purchase a plain copy OR a signature edition. It might help you move a few more copys if you sold them seperately. I know I would buy a copy of each. Just a thought.
Put me in line for #4 and a copy of a singed one!
well i cant do a signature edition unless i want to burn each one myself lol. I think that is what BT did for those discs
im gonna run like 100 off i think

Well he did burn the signature edition ones but I think that would only be because his signature edition ones had a special devolopers flag that gave an extra ship, message on the title screen and I heard something additional about the music. Aside from that its a sticker on the front of the manual and a signature on the back of the manual... So really you could do stickers and signatures or something of that nature, just nothing "in game".
Yeah. Ill probably sign ALL of them if people want. lol
the in game stuff was like your name at the title, and all that.
would be very costly to do professional runs of that setup. 1 disc at a time.... then change it and redo it.... lol >_<
I cant speak for everyone else but I would definately like my copy signed. Do you plan on numbering them when you sign them? 1/100 - 100/100?

No probably not, because then I'd be giving some people bigger e-penises than other people!
:-D lol
Only 100 copies? That doesn't sound like enough; you might want to get in touch with B.T. to see how many copies of Implode and Meteor Blaster DX were sold, so you don't end up needing a second stamping.

I dont want to overshoot it since im paying out of pocket for these and only have 6$ right now to my name. If they start selling really well i will definitely use some of the profits to do more presses
IIRC, 500 MB's were made, I think 1000 Implodes, but, I'm not 100% sure, those figures just came to mind for some reason.
O_o seriously? And they all sold?
Quote from: Psycho Arkhan on 07/17/2009, 12:43 PMO_o seriously? And they all sold?
If you check his website he still has them for sale. Implode was released in 2002 and he still has them in stock. Meteor Blaster DX was released in 2004 and he has those in stock also. 100 to start with doesn't sound like a bad idea and just reprint more as needed. Of course I do hope you sell tons of them and they fly off the shelves when you release it but do you really want to make 500 or more games and have them take possibly 5 years or more to sell them all?
yeah i cant affrd 500 presses at once right now. I so poor!

I wouldn't mind making a preorder and paying to help you get started. I'm sure a few others here wouldn't mind paying ahead also.
That's not a bad idea! I'd definitely put down money for a pre-order! :)
I will preorder Insanity, I guarentee!
How much for the pre-order?
Well theres the proof. If you want to start taking preorders to help pay for the first bundle you print, there are people willing to help out
Well, sweet!

Im having alot of trouble finding a place that will do a replication run on such a small quantity of discs.
For those who dont know...
Replication: Make a glass master, use it to make CDs
Duplication: Use expensive equipment and duplicate to high quality CD-Rs
one place uses Teiyo green dye discs.
My question is, if the pro CD-R route (same jewel case design, same cd label print, different media) becomes the actual result, is everyone OK with this, and what media would be best to seek out?
I know of diamond silverbacks, teiyo green dyes (heard of them, but never used/seen them), and maybe another Teiyo media....
any suggestions/reasonings would be appreciated!

Mind you, I'll still buy a copy if it ends up on CD-R, but I would much,
much,
much rather see it stamped out on real discs. My Duo refuses to play CD-Rs of any type (two copies of Meteor Blaster DX and I can't play either  ), and I also question the long term viability of CD-Rs; I know good ones are supposed to last beyond the century mark, but they're undeniably more fragile and are perceived as cheap and crappy. How few were you planning on doing? A quick surf o' the web turned up a few places that will do runs of as few as 300, though at a price where you're better off doing a full 1000.
I definitely want pressed CDs for the same reason. Everywhere I go , they jack the low run prices up so much that 1000 is more intelligent, but I dont know if 1000 will even be worth it.
I wanted to run 100 so I dont overshoot how well the game sells....
but, its looking more and more like ill have to do more, like 300+ and keep my fingers crossed that it doesnt flop

Yeah, I feel the same way as necro.
To be honest, I think one of the primary reasons why I never bought Meteor Blaster was the fact that it was on CDR -- now I'm not sure how many feel the way I do, but just so you know.
Then again, I completely understand how you wouldn't want to dig yourself in a hole. Say you print a minimum amount, what kind of sales numbers would you need to do to break-even? Double-digits? Triple-digits?
If it's double digits, I think a pre-order system would be a good low-risk way for you to get started. I'd be willing to pitch in for that too.
If it's triple digits (especially if it's deep in the hundreds), I'd be pretty damn cautious too!
id need to sink about 1000$ in, give or take, to get pressed cds
and then pray they all sell. somewhere between 20.00 and 25.00$ seems reasonable. That way if I sell 50 of em i at least recupe the production cost.
As we've already seen here, some people want to preorder, and that is awesome. It makes me rest a bit easier knowing a good handful of people are willing to preorder.
I really am trying to find a good pressing place. If anyone else has any info, thatd be good.
I really dont want to do the ghetto CDR route.
when the time comes (soon!) I will put up a preorder page on surreal softs site. I will also possibly put a donations page to anyone willing.
I won't take any money at all until I am positive I have found a good pressing establishment.
Also, surreal might have to go thru a name change. It seems the half defunct, unregistered, dead-linked Surreal (http://www.surreal.com/) renewed themselves.
damn!
Offering to do signatures just for the pre-orders will probably give you some initial revenue. That's low cost (nearly zero) to you, and high "value" to the buyer. -- Give the people some reason to cough up money for ya!
signatures?
You mean me sign them with a sharpee?
Sure -- why not? (unless the buyer would rather not have it on there, though I can't imagine why not.)
Doesn't really cost you anything, and it might move some people to cough up the cash for the pre-order. By making it a "limited" item, you're essentially rewarding the people who are paying up front & lowering your risk of having to eat up the production costs. I think it's a pretty fair way to go about it.
I see, I see!
I just didn't really think my pokey little signature would be worth anything other than a laugh, lol.
Nah, don't sell yourself short bud -- I can't imagine that there are many who can code a PCE game from scratch and get it down to a final product on a pressed CD.
And if you are going to do the pre-order thing, try to get in touch with other PCE communities out there that do not use English as a primary language. Perhaps a few of us can help you out in creating a simple message in other languages, and post 'em to different PCE forums in various markets. I'd definitely try to tap the Japanese market, and a few other Euro markets (French, German, maybe Spanish?).
Anyway, whatever you do, hope the whole thing goes well!
only $20-25? Personally, I'd go atleast $30, I was figuring the game was gonna be close to 50, but, maybe that's pushing it :-k

$20-25 sounds a tad low personally. I'd pay 30 for it and if you were going to do some special limited signed ones I'd go $35-$40. Thats just me though.
Just know that the eager early adopters are the ones who'd have the highest willingness-to-pay. Get what you can, but don't price yourself out of the price range of the "common Joe turbo player" either.
We will see then as soon as I find a good presser for the discs.
It seems 30$ is a good place then. and preorders to anyone willing to help take care of production fees.
What if I let the buyer decide whether or not they want a signature on it? :)
I THINK I found two good places that will do a replication of 500 CDs, with 4 panel insert, and tray. Unless Im mistaken, that means itll be a cover, an inside page 1, an inside page 2, and then a back. Plus a traycard.
AND shrinkwrap. That way everyone can unshrink them and revel in the newly opened game smell glory...
The one even lets me pick to have white jewel case trays which makes it even more PCE style.

I don't think you'll have any trouble selling such a small number of copies, as there's plenty of nutty Turbo fans. For example, look at the signature edition of
Meteor Blaster DX: its 100 copies were sold out in a few weeks, and remember, this was
after the original version had already been out for a couple o' months.
If I were in your shoes, I'd sell (via pre-order) 50 or 100 signed and numbered copies for $30, raising enough dough to bankroll the disc pressing. After all the discs are made, I'd offer 'em at the same price, as charging more for a simple signature is unseemly, bordering on greed. Just my two cents, of course.

Indeed; I shoulda put '
originally sold for $30'. That's a good idea though: sell
Berzerk with the arcade game compilation at a modest discount. Anyone that passes that up is a dirty pirate hooker.
I have updated the surreal soft homepage with info about the current status...
Here's the summary:
As soon as the game is done, Ill announce preorders!
They will be 30$ and be signed/numbered, and ill run off some soundtracks here at home to include with it as a nice bonus for preordering.. kind of like gamestop! One enough funds are raised to cover manufacturing (it should take 25 or so preorders, but i will do more than that if people are wanting them), Ill send em off to get pressed
After the preorders are done and gone, the regular game will be 30$ also it just wont be signed.
I also have a link for donations if anyone is gracious enough to bestow us with some extra help. Anything is appreciated..
serious donators will have their name in the special thanks section of the in game credits. By serious I mean, no donating a nickle to buy into the credits. :-D [-X
We will see how things go from there with actual sales. Maybe they will all sell and a second run will be in order. I don't know :)
heres to hopin!
PS: Got a new name. Going to park / redirect surrealsoft to it real soon here
What are you doing for cover art?
Edit for an idea: It would be great to have a reversible cover so one side is PC Engine style and the other is in the style of those dreadful early TG16 covers.
We have a nice image for cover art done up by my girlfriend, and colored by a friend. Its also the title screen :-D
I wish a reversable cover was doable. I love those things. Doing a 4 panel insert won't allow for it though. Youd see it if you open the game case :(

Seconded. That is a great idea. I volunteer to make a "Claymation"-inspired cover for the TG-16 side.
Awesome.
Just be careful about limited numbered signatures ("number x out of y") -- that closes the loop for you if you wanted to do more signatures later, for say, a 2nd-run pressing, or if you permanently want to sell a "signature edition" later for a higher fee, etc. It also opens up possible profiteering -- people buying multiple copies, and trying to sell it higher once the number of signatures are done for. Hell, I'd leave the numbers out of it just to stick to those type of people.
Anyway -- that's just my opinion. But either way, you're starting to cause a little buzz here for the pending release -- that's awesome!
I should put a little note in the packaging "If youve paid more than 30$ for this game, you have been hosed."
The numbered signature edition would be great for the first preorder run I think.
any later signature editions can be in a different colored sharpee! Edition 1 and Edition 2!

Sounds good. You can always limit it to no more than two copies per person to discourage profiteers.

I think that a disclaimer would be nice. I got the idea from that super hucard ISO thats floating around. It says if you've paid more than the price of a CD-R, you've been ripped off.
I hope it's ok that the soundtracks are going to be run off by me on my computer here and most likely slipped into a slim jewelcase, or a paper sleeve.
Duplicating them would produce the same result, and replicating them would be counter productive.

I agree that pre-orders would be nice and it would definately get him an influx of cash to get them pressed. On the down side though, if he hasn't set up a deal to get them done yet, what would be the point? Basically now he just has people dying for the release, if he takes preorders people will get impatient if he doesn't get them done fast enough.
I will be opening up the preorders as soon as the artwork for the box is all set, and the game is more ready to be packaged up.
I also don't want to start em til the presser confirms the artwork, and sends me a test disc to make sure they're going to play :)
Insanity is about a week, maybe 2, from play-testing the shit out of it and fixing problems that are spotted. As soon as its at the play testing stage I assume pre-ordering should be good to go. I should be slapping a demo up at the same time so everyone can see what they're going to get.
I would also like to thank everyone for their generosity. It has been very very helpful and appreciated. I hope that everyone who purchases Insanity enjoys it. The community support is what drives the game to be finished, and to start the next game project!
*BERMP*
Still breathing over here btw.
Working out all the chiptune kinks for the songs.
Ive decided a few that were CD-music are going to be omitted from the PSG tracks because they just sound horrible, like a drunk person using a touch tone phone kind of horrible.
There will still be a hearty amount of CD or PSG music for your listening pleasure.
Here is a sample, sans drums. Rename it to test.pce and fire it up.
It could probably use some volume reduction. You tell me.
BEHOLD.......THE FIRST FORUM DEMO FROM AETHERBYTE STUDIOS......!!!! ^_^ (lol)
oh wait, I guess I cant embed a youtube video. :(

What does everyone think?
awesome. I like the jazzy background. (for whatever reason, it brought back memories of the glowing background bits in Phantasy Star II -- but I digress.) Looking forward to the CD music.
and I love the little jig at 1:30 to the music!

Hahahahahaha.
Arkhan, I was wondering if you would consider an option screen to increase the speed of the game. Or, alternatively, make the default a bit (lot) faster.
My 2 cents... ;( (I apologize in advance for backseat driving)
Hey fantastic chiptune music arkhan :D
It's a cd music or a sound chip tune ??
The player sprite run faster then he's moving slowly :-s ..
There is a little bug with one robot ???
http://pcenginefan.blogspot.com/2009/08/insanity-video-with-music-is-out.html
small article windancer put up with a video :)
WOW! This is looking amazing! I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy! =P~
Damn, I was excited about playing it before but now I'm dying. You cock tease!
Yeah that is an actual chip tune on the PSG :)
as for the walking speed, once its fully bug fixed (As in, that one random ghost sprite stops occuring) and its built entirely for CD, a bunch of optimizing is going down that will increase the speed of the game. Its too hard to play test it at fast speed.
and the little guy wont look as seizure like once i finish adding more frames to his walking animation. :) its 2 frames back and forth right now hehe
as for 2 player option......
the next game we make (the arcade pack) is going to have 5 player Insanity death match in it.... ;)

Just a heads up.
The pressing people are lame and FORGOT to tell me until Friday that the masters I sent them both have a "minute pinhole scratch".
I checked the disc under a lamp with a magnifying lens before mailing it and the second copy. They were mint. I call shenanigans.
They only operate on M-F, so you see the problem with being told on FRIDAY. A new batch of masters is heading to them after class today.
They DID tell me if I forked them like, 500+$ they'd make sure they get done by my original date.
I again, call shenanigans. They are looking for more money!
Hope noone is too bummed about an extra few days before getting the game! :(
I myself am though since there wont be any to sell at the show. Which really ticks me off.
NationWide Disc is off the preferred list of pressers for life now. :)
Sorry to hear they're dicking with you. Here's hoping they don't try any more shenanigans.
Im sending 9 more copies of the master today
NINE of them.
if they claim theyre all bad too, ohhhh man.

I'm just mad that you're going thru this crud! :?
Well, to compensate I grabbed a bunch of lightscribe CDRs and im making some impromptu CCAG Show edition's of the game along with all the soundtracks.
Assuming Kinko's can belt out my box art in small quantity for fast/cheap.
I figure 5-10 copies of it will be interesting to go side by side with all the signed copies.
Any that DONT get grabbed up at the show just might become part of a contest.
Signed promo editions!
if anyone is local enough to come check out the show please do. I am thinking a decent Joustaroo prototype will be there and our 10 hour stunt should be setup.
Ill just say it for the hell of it. Were going to see if we can port the game to PSX in under 10 hours. :-D
debuted the Insanity at yesterdays show. Forgot my camera so I didn't get pictures. The con runner did so as soon as theyre up ill post em :)
I think some video was taken.
The entire show was pretty cool. So was the Chinese buffet afterward.
Since the presser delayed the crap out of things I ran off some of my own and they turned out pretty cool.
they're CCAG Exclusive copies , as a few people there pointed out.... and subsequently bought.
I have some left, they look cool. Only 20$ if anyone is interested :) I figure some people might want the only few lightscribe labeled, hand run/assembled by Arkhan copies to show off to people!

I've only had time for a few goes so far, but I have to say the thing that stands out most is the audio. The combination of the sampled speech and music works perfectly - the music is great, both chip and CD, and it really enhances the experience and makes me want to play again.
Still waiting :( ](*,)
Looks nice on my big TV

Found the delivery notice yesterday, so I picked it up from the post office on my way to school. I just tried it for 5 minutes on an emulator. I really do like the music!
Now back to studying...

I'm having to run it through ME, with the sound pumped out through my amp and I whack those scanlines right up for maximum effect.

god I hope you're using System Card 3.0 and not the built in Magic System 3.0 thing.
the games all jacked up with that magic system thing.
I swear one of the bits of speech talks about a robot beautician.
Still waiting...
I swear one of the robots says "pay adrew's foodbill."

yeah, un test ! un test ! 8)
did you get them >?:)
Yes ;)
Played for the first time last night and it's a very nice job. I particularly like the musics and the fact that you can chose between PSG and redbook. They're as good either way.
The only thing is that there's a strange noise every time the title screen is loading.

I noticed that also.. It's like a hum.

Its strange to be honest. It doesnt happen on the emulators and the master disc, so I wonder if maybe when the discs were replicated, something with the audio gaps is slightly wrong for the initial audio track.
I think maybe its playing the last .5 seconds of game data >_>
:(
Yeah, it's like a "data buzz" - very short. I'm going to word this carefully; but, I think that noise kind of adds to the game's inherent "quirkiness" - it compliments the robot speech as well in a roundabout way. I'm lovin' the game btw; great job Aetherbyte Studios!

never thought about it like that!
happy accident
Actually, it's probably that arkhan forgot to shut the sound off when he loads the title screen. If the sound amps aren't turned off, you can hear the data for the title screen actually being loaded. I've noticed this in other CD games (and not just the turbo), and if you have an external amp hooked up (and really turned up) you can hear it really well.
Most op-amps don't actually completely kill the sound; they just drop it to minute levels, so the CD loading noise is there, just usually inaudible.
Something to check for in the next game, arkhan.
What is the 'official' release date for Insanity? November 4th?
