If the blur filtering as bad as the linked screen shots show and can't be disabled, then I'd rather buy a real Genny and smear my television screen with Vaseline to get the same effect.

I hope that filters can be turned off in 720p mode and that there are some unlockable arcade games like on the Genesis Collection. The new Fantasy Zone II would be nice.

The filters can be turned off-

http://www.rpgsite.net/news/297.html

I assumed as much at first, since the Sega Genesis Collection was not only clear, but offered progressive scan for a PS2 game. That and all the crazy video options of some of the Sega Ages collections.

I'm hoping that the comment about the aspect ratio isn't literal was just the PR guy talking about something he doesn't fully understand.

That sucks that the games will be "stretched to fit" a 16:9 screen unless you play on a 4:3 screen.  Stretching video sucks.  Only Ralph Nader stretches his 4:3 images to 16:9, and he is a habitual loser.

It's like they filled in the spaces of some missing titles from the PS2 collection release. I am pretty sure the filters can be turned off since it is a full game collection. Double Dragon the arcade with the filter on for Live Arcade was actually decent in some ways. This collection's filter looks really bad though.

Namco>Sega

I see it as the same thing..release the same thing collection but with more games that the other one didn't have.

Given sega had two sonic collections for the gc all ready and one genesis for the PS2.

I'm starting to think sega is taking lesson from namco and what, they did with the museum serise  ](*,)

Budget priced, with all 4 Phantasy Stars, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force 1 & 2 and Beyond Oasis alone makes it more than worthwhile. But unlockable arcade games seal the deal.

I hope that the "MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER OPTIONS" become online multiplayer and that all the interview videos are 720p video.

I'm not seeing all 4 Phantasy Stars.

I don't want to play unlocked arcade games stretched to fit my 16:9 screen.  Fail.

There is very little chance that the interviews will be in 720p video (maybe upscaled) because all of this has to fit on a wimpy Xbox360 DVD, unless the interviews are crazy short.

It won't be a problem fitting in 720p video, since every real 360 game already does it while also including a current gen game (you can download 720p videos too). I don't think the Genesis games will take up much space.

I really don't believe that the stretching will work the way a PR guy describes it, especially since there's no mention of it on the official page. But even if it did, the games should be upscaled to 720p, so switching to 480p 4:3 will allow you to play them fine on a regular TV set. Plus most widescreen lcd TVs I've encountered allow you to alter the aspect ratio in all kinds of ways.

It'll also be nice if sound tests are included, since too many cart games don't have them. It still won't be better than the real thing, but it's still a great value for fans of adventure/RPG games.

That would be a pain in the ass to switch the PS3 to 4:3 every time I wanted to play this and then switch it back when I am finished just because the programmers at Sega are incompetent.  No widescreen TV I have seen has let you squish 16:9 720p video to a 4:3 space.

I'll let you guys buy this and report back.  Let me know if the 4th Phantasy Star game is in there, even though it isn't a Genesis game.  I can't believe I am the only one who noticed this.  Even Sega and BT thought "well, it has Phantasy Star 4, so it must have all four Phantasy Stars".  Maybe it might be unlockable, but otherwise there are already 40 games on the list.  Necromancer = Epitome of Fail.

That's why it's best to have two (or more) PS3s.  Common sense be damned!

Since it was on the Mega Drive, perhaps nobody else cared.  :P

Sega may not have a clue about what's on the disc (why should they?), but it clearly states in the description that it includes "four titles from the Phantasy Star™ series", so I don't think Black Tiger made any wild assumptions.  I wonder what that word 'over' in front of 40 games could mean; it must mean exactly 40, eh?  :-k

It is a bit of a pain in the ass to switch settings on a PS3, but it's no problem on the 360 and I do it at least once a week when playing it on my 480p projector. The official page for the game says nothing about the aspect ratio and the only mention of it so far is from someone not involved with the game. If you look at Sega's recent retro compilations, they are the best around for video options.

While following news stories about this game, it sounded like the comment about the Phantasy Star series was added after the initial list was posted. I first found that page in a report that PS1 was included. The original Phantasy Star was released for Mega Drive, so it wouldn't be so out of place. Even if it hadn't been, emulating a SMS game in a Mega Drive collection should be less work than random Sega arcade games and for once they're not being stingy with either the number of titles or RPGs. Even if that "four" comment wasn't made, it would be a likely unlockable.

There's no "40" in the title and the official page says: "Take a trip back in time with over 40 titles..." -So I don't think that the game count rules out PS1.
Title: Re: 40-game-mega-drive-compilation
Post by: Joe Redifer on 11/12/2008, 01:39 AM
I hadn't thought about getting multiple PS3s.  But it would be a pain in the ass to tell them apart.  What if I accidentally put the game in the wrong PS3?  I'd be screwed!  Imagine all of that time waiting to eject the disc, turning off the thing, powering up the other one and booting up the game, etc.  Know what would be cool?  If they made the two-player games online compatible.

Anyway, I am more interested in the arcade games than anything.  The only one I have is Golden Axe on Xbox Live Arcade.  Out of all of the companies that have done arcade collections (Taito, etc), you'd think Sega would be all over that using Digital Eclipse's shoddy emulation.  Oh man, that would be great.  They could call it "Kid Chameleon's Great Super Neat Fantastic Arcade Gallery" for all I care.  But with my luck they'd only include Space Harrier, Out Run, After Burner and maybe Power Drift.  I want everything from Choplifter to Galaxy Farce to Thunder Blade to E-SWAT to Altered Beast to Super Hang-On to Golden Axe 2 (friggin' awesome) and beyond.  On one disc.  Make the Genesis versions unlockable.

The description on the official page has been changed again to read something like "games from the Phantasy Star series" instead of "all four".

On another part of the site, it says that the games can be upscaled to 720p, but again it may just be a blurb from a PR guy or something.

Still no solid release date.

Even if I owned a PS3 or an XBox360, I wouldn't be buying this. Reasons why:

I still have my Dreamcast with Smash Pack Vol. 1 (where is Volume 2 SEGA?)
I have both Smash Pack Vol. 1 and 2 for PC.
I have Sega Genesis Collection on PS2, which the emulation sucked (middle finger at Digital Eclipse).

I have tons of ROMS and emulators.

and namely, I have at least 3 Genesis systems, and buy carts for it still.

Furthermore, while this doesn't apply to XBox360 obviously, but doesn't the PS3 upscale PS2 games? Now explain to me how a few extra games is going to make a difference between the PS2 collection and the PS3 version? Wow, 1080p...let me just jump for joy for graphics being upscaled from 320 x 224 to 1920x1080. I think the jump from the original res to 480i was fine, but 1080p, that's a bit overkill.

Also, where are the rare titles? Where are the games that really showed what the system could do, not just this popular crap...? Would it really hurt them to put every single game that they have the rights to, on one release? One volume crap of rehashing the same titles over and over again, gets a bit old. How about more Japanese titles that are actually better than Golden Axe III?! I mean I like Golden Axe III, but the general consensus that I have heard from most people is that they hated the game.

Golden Axe Warrior is a nice touch. I'm now broke till the end of the week, but I'll still probably rent it first to see what it's like. Although arcade sound tests would be worth buying it for if it's $35 tops here.

Anyone buy this yet?

I bought it.  It is $29.  No sound tests for arcade games.  :(  Anyway, here are my thoughts:

The game defaults to 4:3 and with the filter off, so that is good.  You can turn it on and off at will and stretch the screen to 16:9 at any time.  You can also adjust the size of the screen minutely in 4:3 mode if need be.  Each game has their own customized border (even the arcade games, though not actual cabinet art) and that is kind of cool.  The emulation for the most part is pretty good, better than Digital Eclipse usually does (which is not surprising since they did not handle this).  However the sound emulation is not completely perfect.  The voices sound scratchier than a real Genesis, maybe a bit more like a bad Genesis 2 or 3.  The music sounds fine from what I can tell.  However some of the louder sounds clip and become pretty much pure static, like when you approach the boss in Altered Beast (arcade version) and he blows up just before he begins fighting.  Instead of the explosion sound, you get bursts of static.  This is pretty rare, though.  Also I noticed that in SHinobi there is an instrument missing in the CONTINUE screen countdown music.  The rest of the game looks and sounds fine.

Now let's talk about Space Harrier.  This is an unlockable arcade game, but you won't want to play it here.  First of all, ALL of the sound and music is at a higher pitch than normal.  "Welcome to the Fantasy Zone " and other vocal samples sounds more like a pre-teen than a man.  Also the control is just like the arcade meaning that when you let go of a dirrection you snap back into the middle.  Unless you are playing on the Saturn with the Mission Stick or the actual arcade, this just won't do and makes it very difficult to control.

Otherwise it is a good collection.  I still need to beat Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine to get the last trophy and that game is hard as hell!  Also, in order to unlock Phantasy Star 1, you need to beat the first boss in Sonic 2 with two players.  WTF?  So you MUST have a second controller.

Hey, I'm assuming you got the Xbox 360 version, correct?

I'm tempted to pick this up, but the lack of Moonwalker (arcade version) is killing me. What  was Sega thinking?

Seriously, though, it's a damn shame that Space Harrier misses the mark. It's not a deal-breaker, though, since I have the SMS cartridge already. :)

No Moonwalker because that is a licensed title.

And no, I got the PS3 version.  I don't like turning on the Xbox360 ever, because I am afraid it will break.  So I get all of my games on the PS3 which I don't have to fear will die on me.

Hahaha.  I hear ya :)

So, have you (or anyone) heard if the Xbox version is pretty much identical (performance-wise) to the PS3 release? I'd get this for my brother, since I owe him.

I haven't heard anything that makes it stand out from the PS3 version in any way, good or bad.  An article about the compilation is going up today I think at Sega-16, and the site owner (Ken) who wrote it has the Xbox 360 version.
