I finally got round to starting my new podcast. You can download from the banner above or subscribe via iTunes (my bandwidth is a bit limited at the moment so download direct if you can).
I'm covering most formats from Spectrum to Arcade and will probably develop the format a little once I get back into the swing of things (suggestions have been noted for later!)
Episode 1 has some awesome music from Crime Fighters (arcade) so check it out.
The website for the podcast is at http://www.pcengine.co.uk/podcast if you want to keep up with the episodes from there.
Thanks - downloading now for later enjoyment (or trying to anyway). By the by, what's the meaning of Wibble? Is it a close relative of a Tribble?
It's more a reference to the wibbly wobbly sounds of early chip music. But the added Blackadder connection makes it cool.
A great, short, and sweet podcast. Please make more!
Cool!
This is pure coolness Paul! I would like to thank thee for this awesome download! 8)

Thanks for your comments.
Don't you think that Konami had one of the most awesome sound chips in their arcade machines? I love the sound of Crimefighters and their other stuff from that era.

Believe it or not, I'm more impressed with the sound they managed to squeeze out of NES/Famicom than the arcade hardware. Still, that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy Crimefighters and arcade tunes. :)
Heck, I even like the minimalist tunes from MegaZone (which sounds downright archaic compared to the stuff you are referring to).
Paul, thanks for the awesome download "Ole Chap"." I agree with the others, more!

I really enjoyed the old PC Engine City podcasts, so if the format of this is similar, I'm sure it'll be a home-run.
Tuned in for a bit of episode 1 -- Man, I had forgotten how frickin' awesome Herzog Zwei music is... (Now tuning into rest of the music from that game)
I hope Arkhan appreciates the massive plug for Insanity in this episode!
I finally got around to listening to episdoe 2 again (great!) and I have to say that I really like the track from Lost Patrol (Amiga).
Lost Patrol is brand new to me, and I love hearing new stuff.

I think it was used on a few Amiga demos in its day, it was quite a popular tune. Suits the game perfectly.

BC on the specy is amazing. very cool and so sidish. even i like the sid version more. i guess the specy was also done by tim follin? the same typically him improvised line.
btw. wasn't crime fighters from '89? ;)
Yep, Crime Fighters is from 89, I thought I said that?
Wibble 3 comments:
1. Respect the TIGRE
2. Did the AMSTRD always pump out bass like that? I love how aggressive the bass in GnG is.
3. More AMSTRD GnG tunes, please.
4. TRAZ! What a great tune (even though it is unabashedly "happy" and upbeat). PCE homebrewers should consider a TRAZ-inspired game: 4-5 player support, construction mode, etc. It would be even better than what Off the Wall (Atari/Tengen) (https://archives.tg-16.com/turbo_play_0005.htm#tengen) promised to be.
5. Dig up some more "unique" (and/or exclusive) tracks like the one from Space Harrier SMS, that was great :)

The old-old-timers here are sick of me bringing up MegaZone as one of my favorite arcade games. It was at the local ice rink and I played it all the time. Sure, I loved the other games... but MegaZone was special.
There isn't enough love for MegaZone these days ;).

There's something about the way that the bass kicks in at the start of that tune that makes it one of the best examples of C64 music. I think my favourite 64 tune is probably the Stormlord intro though, I'll no doubt play that on a later show.

Hey sunteam, I'll be downloading this newest episode shortly.... but first I have to wait for the final 800+ files of the HVSC to download onto my iPod.
Yes, your podcast inspired me to get a SID player for my iPod. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner.
ON TOPIC: Stormlord is, indeed, a wonderful tune.

Just finished listening!
Loved LED Storm (ZX Spectrum), which was new to me.
Also loved the Ninja Warriors track, since I had long since forgotten what the arcade tune sounded like. I love the voice in that! It has a quintessential 80's sound and feel to it.
The remix was interesting, too: quite "de-constructed" in the beginning. Kinda makes me wish the remix played around with things a bit more in the last half of the song.

All right. Great stuff :)
I finally downloaded episode 5 last night and, this morning, I listened to it a few times (on repeat) as I grudgingly awoke.
1. I'm glad this is a themed episode. It's nice to have them every now and then.
2. I am particularly happy you chose some lesser-known tracks (SMS hidden stage, Amiga title screen, C64 original). Very nice tunes: The SMS tune was far more elegant than I remember it, the C64 SID (and remix) is mandatory since many folks here don't listen to SLAY Radio, and the Amiga tune--well, I had never heard it before.
3. On that note, I had never heard the Gameboy tune before, either.
4. 3, 2, 1... Let's Go! This track from LEO was a treat. It sounds like a Pet Shop Boys B-side (which is a good thing, as far as I am concerned).
5. The only way to have improved* on this episode: throw in a track, albeit Red Book, from PCE R-Type Complete!
* I know this is an unpopular position to take.
** 3, 2, 1... Let's Go!
I would have loved to put a PCE CD track in, but i made the difficult decision to only use chip generated stuff. It's a bit restrictive sometimes as I really want to share some of the awesome CD Rom tunes, but I have to stick by it (with the exception of the remixes as they are 'extras').
I love the bonus at the end of the R Type episode. I agree, that was an great remix.

It's up there in my top 5 C64 remixes, along with the Double Dragon remix by CZ Tunes which, despite being pretty much a drumbeat on top of the chip sound, somehow manages to sound just great.

Yes, the tune is Xevious (I was going to use the arcade version but it sounded terrible). The blast is from a shooter, not the ones mentioned, but I thought it would be easy to guess. The other effect (footsteps) is from a Telenet game...
It sounds like Golden Axe.

And I doubt it's Lady Phantom, which is the most recent Telenet game I've played (it's not that good, unfortunately).
DRAGON SPIRIT/SABER sound effect?
Two really unsubtle hints now: one game has to do with cars, the other has to do with someone on this forum.
It was Legend of Dekoboko (footsteps), Xevious (jingle) and Tatsujin (explosion).

I listened to Ep 11 two and half times during my commute today. I was surprised by how much the first song reminded me of 80's dance/pop songs. When I heard the voice samples used in the song, I was convinced they were from a BASKETBALL game. No joke.
:)
Not sure how you link it with basketball! One of the samples is Brit comedian Harry Enfield's character Loadsamoney from a 1990s TV show. Never really liked him much myself but he was popular. Oh shit! I've been wondering about that song for 20 fucking years, no joke. I never played the game itself but downloaded the song (possibly as a MOD?) from an Amiga BBS in 1990, or something like that. I put it on a cassette and listened to it about a million times.
The closest real life pop equivalent, IMO, is the Canadian group Kon Kan:
Pet Shop Boys' Minimum Wage Kanookktican Cousins (https://youtu.be/swnfPL8i4UM)
I downloaded the first podcast yesterday and listened to it in my car. Some great stuff on there, especially the Donkey Kong Country tune. That particular chiptune always manages to get a strong emotional reaction out of me like any good song should. :) An eerie song that offsets my daily intake of live Who nicely. 8)

You got it! :)
Sadly, you already played my personal favorite DE tune back towards the beginning of the podcasts. But, DE obviously has so much awesome musix that a podcast featuring this PC Engine legend would still rank high. :)
That last G 'n G track was truly frightening!

That's the last of them, get it while you can.
Sorry to see it go, but all great things must come to an end sometime. Thanks for good tunes. 8)
Damn, too bad. I was going to suggest some underappreciated Neo-Geo music for your next episode(s).
Thanks for making these 24 episodes for us.
What!?!?!? :( :( :( :( :(
I am saddened to hear that the show has ended. I have thoroughly enjoyed these podcasts as well as PC Engine City when I go for jogs, car rides, etc. I still have a few more episodes to go through.
Paul, do you know of any CD-based game (PC Engine related or not) that has a similar soundtrack to Space Fantasy Zone? I know there are other Fantasy Zone games, but I think they use FM sound.
Thanks for all the podcasts, Paul! Though the show has come to an end, we have tons of material to go back to. :)

Yes it will be missed. There are still episodes that I haven't downloaded yet, so they'll be like new to me. :D
Sunteam, in the very first episode of wibble during the Donkey Kong Country track there is a "Damn dirty ape" voice clip WAY in the background that can be barely heard. Was this done by you? Everytime I listen to it gives me a chuckle. :)

Yeah, I added that for a bit of fun:)
I am downloading the final two episodes now. I waited so long because I didn't want it to end. I am glad to see that Dungeon Explorer gets the final hurrah. :)
...see you next podcast idea I hope.
Sunteam, will there be a chance to get some of the earlier episodes available again? I still need episodes 8,9,10, and 11.
...or better yet, a compilation CD! That would be awesome! I would totally support that. :)

Nevermind. When I clicked on the link it would take me to Rapidshare like it should, but then there wouldn't be any info on the page. This would only happen on the older episodes so I just figured they were taken down. It's working now.
Hurry because some of them will be gone soon. Rapidshare has a time limit before deleting files. If any links that you need fail to work, email me and I'll send them over via wetransfer or something similar.

Coolness! I'll let you know.
I am listening to the Darius episode now. Pretty weird (but cool) stuff. One of the tracks nearly made me drive my car into a ditch.

It's those subliminal messages I've been putting in them.
WIBBLE IS BACK!
Just kidding, it isn't.
But I am putting Wibble up as a series of videos on YouTube now, just for the hell of it.
Playlist can be found here (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFOS8QK3ma_VKQcRM5fciNRsSo_7NZuNd).

Very good idea. :)
Great idea. I'm caching these right now for the drive to work
Thanks for the terrible case of blueballs, Sunteam.
Had the best drive to work ever. Cant place the accent though. I was thinking generic south but the u sounds say something like Northampton?
Duh, he's british. Tee-hee.
Listened to it today at work. Great stuff.
