Poll
Question: What do you consider yourself more of?
Option 1: Collector
Option 2: Gamer
Option 3: More of a collector but I do play them
Option 4: More of a gamer but I do collect them
Option 5: Collector and gamer evenly
Title: Are you a gamer? Collector? Both?
Post by: RoyVegas on 12/04/2009, 12:54 PM
In my time being here (and other sites also) there has always seemed to be tension between all of these different types of people that enjoy gaming/collecting in their own way.  From what I have seen it usually seems like the gamers tend to be more vocal about not liking the collectors.  Personally I considered myself to be a collector and a gamer evenly.  I love to play the games but I also like to have what I consider a complete collection.

What are you? What are your thoughts on it?

Edit:  Noticed I placed it in Fighting Street right?  Dig in! lol

Fighting Street, eh?  Go suck a cock!

I'm both, I guess.  Almost all gamers have a bit of collector in them, as you have to collect games in order to play 'em (unless you have a peg leg and/or a parrot on your shoulder).

People that are merely collectors are quite possibly retarded, for the best part of having these games is playing them.  Nobody, and I mean nobody, thinks anyone is cool for having a complete collection of games collecting dust in their mom's basement; crack those fuckers open and start playing, else sell 'em to somebody that'll truly appreciate them and invest the money in mutual funds or something.

I'm a gamer, of course.

I mean seriously, what kind of dumbass collector decides to get into VIDEO GAMES?  From a collectors' standpoint, the history behind video games is pretty limited and lacks the depth and marketability of other venues.  (Of course, as a gamer, I find the history behind video games to be fascinating.)

And what kind of self-respecting gamer would spend $1000 on something like Magical Chase and deprive himself of the ability to purchase and play even more games?  That's just silly.

Anyone who calls themselves a "collector" implies that they place more value on the item than on the experience.  There is NO way to be a blend of collector and gamer.  That's just total hogwash!

Hm.  Necromancer, you're a smart guy, but your response to me is pretty dumb.

Of course I own games.  I own games that I am playing, games that I plan to play again, games that I haven't played yet, and games that I haven't gotten around to selling because of other time commitments.

This is not about the literal sense of being a "collector" (as in, having possessions).  This poll establishes a horizontal line: at one end, there is gamer.  At the other end, there is collector.  The poll makes it sound as though it's possible to be somewhere in the middle on that line.  And I'm saying that the establishment of such a measurement is ridiculous.

Why do some people enjoy keeping particular games?  Because they are GAMERS and those games bring back fond memories.

Why do some people strive to collect entire libraries for a system?  Because they are GAMERS who loved that system and want to experience everything it has to offer, forever and ever whenever they want.

The more interesting question to ask would be: why do you purchase games?

Do you buy games to play them?  Do you buy them because you love the system?  Do you buy them because someone else talked about it, and you want to impress them?  Do you buy games because your parents never did, so "owning lots of games" has become a personal measure of success?  (Studies have shown that what we were deprived of as children, is often an over-indulgence later in life.)

And another question that gets more at the heart of the issue that so-called "gamers" have with so-called "collectors": Do you purchase duplicates of a game you already own?  If so, why?

Just speaking from my own experiences but ummmm me.  Maybe it makes me a dumbass by your logic but by mine its very simple to understand.  As a kid I did get some things that I wanted and other things my parents just wouldn't put the money out for.  To be a little more clear, my parents did shell out the cash for a Turbo and a copy of Bonk but I never was able to get any other games.  I wished in one hand and shit in the other and guess which filled up first?  Even though I only had Bonk and Keith Courage it left a hell of an impression on me.  It has and always will be my favorite system.

Now that I have more stability I started picking up the entire collection that I couldn't have as a kid.  Reliving a childhood fantasy I guess. Any way you look at it we all have our reasons why we love the system.

The kind of gamer that only plays Turbografx maybe?  From a gaming standpoint in my opinion the game is fun as hell.  If you take the price out of the picture, would you buy it?  It's a must have game for any Turbografx gamer or collector.

Quote from: Emerald Rocker on 12/04/2009, 05:21 PMAnyone who calls themselves a "collector" implies that they place more value on the item than on the experience.
Have to agree and disagree here.  I collect them because I want to fully experience the game library.  It doesn't matter if the game sucks to people or not.  In my eyes EVERY game is part of the library hense the experience.

Nothing in your response sounds like a collector to me.  You sound like a guy who really enjoys Turbo games.

Tell me about the sealed copies you keep (with no intentions of opening them), or the piles of duplicates that you bought just to have them around, and then you can call yourself a "collector".

EDIT: As a sidepoint, I noticed that you assume I haven't purchased and played Magical Chase, which is incorrect.  I liked it quite a bit, although it's not as great as its price (even at $100) would imply.

I can't reduce this into simple black and white terms like E.R.  I buy Turbo games to play 'em, but I won't kid myself into believing that some stinkers will ever see the light of day again after their cursory inspection; the only reasons I keep 'em are because they're part of the collection now and because they ain't worth much anyway.  That sounds like a collecting to me.

I find your logic silly.  Why buy any games when you can save your dough by renting, borrowing, or downloading 'em?  I don't have enough time to play the games I already have, so buying a game like M.C. would deprive me of jack shit.

Ok.  The sealed games I bought for absolutely no fucking reason at all other than to have the sealed games.  I can say that most of them I got pretty damn cheap.  Like Y's I&II and Devils Crush and about 20 other sealed games that I got for $10 a piece shipped.  Why would anyone pass up a deal like that?  I pick up sealed stuff only if it's cheap, as I don't really need it. I just find it a challenge to collect them when I find them cheap.

Quote from: Emerald Rocker on 12/04/2009, 06:17 PMor the piles of duplicates that you bought just to have them around
I didn't buy duplicates of open games intentionally.  I bought game lots, and sometimes those game lots came with duplicates of games I already had.  I didn't buy them just to have them around.  I have been trying to trade off my duplicates for the boxes I need.  I've also been selling off some the dupes on eBay.  Maybe you have me confused with Wmac, he's the one with 100 dupes. lol

Regarding why people would spend money instead of downloading......

Maybe some gamers like to monetarily support the developers, importers, or re-sellers who make games available to the public?  Being a "gamer" does NOT mean that people feel entitled to play any game, at any time, for free.  I know that's not what you said, but that's where your line of reasoning is leading and that would be a stain on the image of our hobby.

So hopefully this post puts a stop to your downhill slide.

To Royvegas:

Hm.  I thought the purpose of this thread was to prove to Zeta that you're a gamer.  I was trying to help you out, chum, by saying you're NOT a collector.

Anyways, I understand the point about duplicates.  That's the nature of buying game lots; it doesn't mean you're a "collector".  It means you ended up with games you didn't want.  But now that I know you DO own a bunch of sealed games, I think differently of you.  I'm not sure I want to defend your honor anymore.

To answer your question: people would pass up such deals because (1) they don't need the game if they already have it, and (2) passing it up means that someone else can get the game later.  It keeps the extra copy in circulation, which helps the community.

I would also like to point out that no one has selected "collector" on the poll, showing that this is ridiculous.  What we have here are gamers, gamers who are proud of the games they own, and... well, I guess we have Royvegas since he apparently doesn't want to be called a gamer.  You should have voted "collector", chum!
Title: Re: Are you a gamer? Collector? Both?

90% gamer.  The only reason I consider myself 10% collector is that I do like having physical copies of stuff I like.  But I have no problems doing away with games that's not my cup o' cake.  I don't care for shrink wrap, spine cards, multiple copies, condition of the game/manual (as long as it plays/legible).  I only ask for the case & manual to sort them out in some meaningful fashion.

But whenever a game of this vintage goes far beyond a "reasonable" price ($30-$40 for me), I have ZERO problems downloading it.  No Turbo/PCE game is worth crazy sums of money to me - there are just too many alternatives for a game to justify triple digit sums.

I don't need to prove to anyone that I'm a gamer nor do I need your help proving I'm not a collector.  I voted myself as a game and collector evenly.

If a persons honor is gained or lost due to how a video game sit on their shelf then you need a new set of prioritys.

Ah yes.  I can definately see you opening eBay and finding a sealed Magical Chase sitting up there with a Buy it Now of $25.00 and you going, "I'm not gonna pick that up since it would be taking it from another gamer."  Would you?  If you are saying you would, your a fucking liar.    :^o

Maybe you missed the poll results so far.  I see 6 people that voted that they are SOME form of collector/gamer and 3 that voted they are strictly gamers that don't collect at all.  Yup I should definately be the only one thats a collector/gamer right?

It's good to see honest responses from people like wmacmonagle.  He collects because it's his only attachment to games due to being a family man... but his gamer soul would not let him simply pick "COLLECTOR" because he knows that's not where his heart lies.

Honest responses are great.  As opposed to responses from people like RoyVegas who get defensive about weird things.

I would say I am gamer mostly, some collector.  But probably 80 percent gamer.  I have 20+ sealed 3DO games I am about to tear into soon!  Fuck it, I don't care.  Games are to be played.  Not ashamed of the 1000's of ROMS and burned games that I have, fuck it.  Done paying a ton of money for everything.  Free stuff is good, like that free XBOX 360 I got yesterday, and fixed today (RROD).  Fuck it.  I don't give a fuck.  I'd open a sealed Magical Chase just to piss everyone off, then I'd shit on it and proceed to fire up the rom on my laptop (which I do frequently).  I don't give a shit flying fuck.

Mostly a collector. I like having a large collection of games, even if I don't get to play most of them or even if I think some of them suck. I also don't give a damn if people dislike the fact that I collect games...what I choose to collect, and what I consider valuable, is my own business and no one else's.

I used to keep games just so that my total number of games was as high as possible.  But I eventually weeded out all the junk and kept only the good stuff.  Quality over quantity in my collection!  I need to weed through them again soon.

I suppose it's easier to attempt to take some moral high ground to obfuscate matters and to avoid the crux of a debate, for you've completely ignored the two points being made.  Firstly, unless you limit yourself to buying bargain-basement, common games (depriving yourself of most of the better games in the process), you can play more games through other means.  You may disapprove of pirating, but your thoughts on the subject are less than germane and fail to negate the point, as renting and borrowing are perfectly legal, as is downloading games via Virtual Console.  Secondly, if a person has narrow interests and possesses the means to purchase every title that he wants, then he is deprived of nothing by buying Magical Chase.

I anxiously await your next failed attempt at refuting my words.

I like games.

Seriously though. I play and buy a lot of Neo Geo games. Yep, there's some collector in me yet. So far I got 44 carts for it. Half are the cheapo games from $20-$60 and the other is a mix between the $80 to $400 range. It costs money, but this was done over a period of 10 years. I have quite a bit of NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2 games as well. My Sega and PCE collection is lacking in comparison, but I like those systems as well. I just buy the games I want to play and own.

I mostly just like to play the games, but it is nice to enjoy a complete mint copy of a game. It gives me that feel of almost owning a new game to fapp off to...      There is a lot of childhood nostalgia and some to do with being deprived of buying most of this stuff by having cheap parents. They got a little cooler about buying more games when I got in High School. It wasn't till I got a job waiting tables making $300 a week while going to community college and still living with them when I started going crazy with my spending. I was also buying a lot of music and movies as well. I just like stimulating entertainment, boredom sucks. I never was a sports, cars, etc.. type guy.

As I get older I do find it harder to play the games with the excitement I used to have, but still I get some fun out of it. I will always be a gamer first. I even just realized that I own 20 Xbox 360 games now. I don't really care for the collecting of that system, as the games seem to have lower replay value for me. I do like seeing new and different games though. Unfortunately a lot of my friends got out of old school gaming or moved off. So that may have something to do with my excitement lowering. Thank god for forums where we can share common interest in what we like.

A hardcore collector that doesn't play games at all is more of a hoarder to me. "He who has the most toys, WINS!", gotta love that ole saying. It is rare to see people that just do that in this hobby as games have a more practical use than say; action figures, comics and whatever the hell else. As for the whole not letting copies of sealed games sitting in your shelves going back to the community, that is our right. There are some rich ass people that do far worse with their money and to others. I don't own 1 sealed game, because I play them. I even got games that I may have played once and they just sit there, but don't want to get rid of it either. Mainly it is due to they aren't worth anything and don't feel like getting around to liquidating them.

I collect to game.

meaning I amass games with the express intent of playing them.  There are few games in my house that I HAVENT played.  These are games which I just bought like 2 weeks ago.

I don't buy stupid shit im not going to play just so i can go I HAVE THAT, LOOK AT ME I HAVE THAT.  If I didnt play RPGs, I wouldnt buy them all just because theyre "rare", "sought after" or "collectible".

The only exception to this rule is NEC consoles.  Im a fanboy about them and aim to own every game for PCE and PCFX.

anyone who buys tons of games just to stack em up, update some online profile and show off what they have sitting around their house is a dipshit.  The time you spent checking games off your list could have been spent trying one out.

If you aren't going to play the games, save the money and buy something else.  I guess its cool though if you at least intend to play them eventually and are just really busy doing more important things.  Posting on forums and twittering all day are not important things.

what especially bothers me is when people who never really touch games act as gaming informants, or base their knowledge of a game off of their memories of playing it at a birthday party when they were 7.  kids dont know shit.

i have a friend who spends hundreds of dollars at a time buying games that he shoves in a drawer alphabetically, never opens, brags about all the stuff hes got, and continues to play rockband only more or less.  He then bases all of his gaming knowledge off of IGN, not off of actually playing the games.  hell he even PAYS for an IGN membership.

using your game stash as a penis enlargement attempt is really retarded.

starting a sentence with "IGN Says that game is..." immediately discredits you as intelligent.  You officially know nothing about games if you trust IGN and treat it as if its a first hand gaming experience.

hell ive even watched him youtube playthrus of games to replace having to play them.  I guess its easier to lay in bed and watch youtube on your overpriced macbook that you only use for browsing and AIM that you bought just because everyone else got one than it is to play the fuckin game yourself.

it just dawned on me: why the hell am i friends with this shlep.  #-o

Personally, I don't consider myself to be either. I buy games and play them, but usually after a few plays, it just gets added to the pile. Certain genres I do collect; I'm especially into different music-based games, mostly for the soundtracks.
What I do consider myself is a game analyist. I'm more interested in how a game does things and why. What is fun about the game, and what mechanics could stand to be improved.

Just my 2 cents.

Definitely a gamer. I only buy and play whatever suits my tastes (shooters, RPGs, platformers). What is the point of owning a video game when you hardly play it?

I'm just a collector of certain series of games, such as Gradius/Parodious or Contra, but also games I like and will play.  All the games I own that are collectibles were bought way before they were collectibles.  Also Ebay doesn't make a game a collectible by charging $329872345098723490872345.01.  So I'm really just a gamer that collects to play I guess.  Collecting pce could be fun but the price is way out of my league, and I can't stand buying games that are utter shit.  So I will just stick to what I'm doing and just buy what I play.

I've been collecting and playing Turbo for years.  I have a complete US collection, I'm working on the Japanese collection, and I have some play copies of games too.  Sometimes it's one in the same, but for some games that I'd just rather not open, I may have a second copy.  I don't have stacks and the piles of the Japanese games you've all seen me sell are surplus from me getting games for the collection and for playing.  Sure, I collect, but I play a lot too.  And I won't collect for anything just for the sake of stacking crap up on a shelf.  Of course there are stacks, but that's just a matter of putting things in some order, yes?

I collect and play mainly a handful of systems:
Turbo/PCE
Neo Geo Pocket
IGS and ST-V

As you can see, I only really collect for systems with small game counts and ones that are a bit unusual.  The collection is managable, obtainable with a little effort, and the systems are pretty fun.  I play them regularly and they look great on the shelf.  Yes, I have a sealed Magical Chase, got it for a "reasonable" price, and no I'm not going to open it.  I find it hilarious the people that say they'd open it and do what have you with it just to prove a point.  Come on, you have it and know the value of it you're going to make some money on it.  Not saying there aren't some cases, but no one is going to throw away hundreds or thousands of dollars to prove that point.

As others have said, as I've gotten older and have more obligations with work and the family, play time is at a premium.  So I'm clearing out some stuff like my Neo Geo kits and keeping only the stuff I play the most from that.  Moving a lot of gaming time to testing mods (which is the bulk of my Turbo time these days) and now the Wii where I have downloaded a lot of my favorite Turbo titles.  And the family can play more readily in that format.

I just have a collecting bug like a lot of people.  I just need to keep it managable.  And now I'm starting a new one, one that's fun and won't make me look like a loser.  Getting baseball games for the shelf, boxed ones especially since they're so cheap.  The collection will be pretty small, cost me nearly nothing, and I absolutely love to play baseball games.  I still regularly play World Class Baseball and Baseball Stars for NES.  RBI too (well, the PCE version ;)  ).

Yes, you can do both and I said roughly equal for me.  I just don't get the people that collect the entire NES and/or Atari library.

I have to say that the opening a sealed Magical Chase comment does pop up here and there.  I recall when my buddy Oldskool said it in a forum post not to long ago, I called him up and gave him shit for it.  I really just don't get what the people that say it are trying to prove.  Ok, if some of you got your hands on a Magical Chase and really just wanted it to play it, why not sell the sealed one for the cash and buy an open one since all you want to do is play it?  Then you have the cash to pay off a student loan or a bill.  I mean really, it's just something to act all purist about being a "true gamer".  Noone is going to pay for it and then open it here. You can say you will all day long but fact of the matter is, if you had it in your hand you wouldn't do it.

Fully agree.

Not trying to flame yet another MC war, but I heartily disagree Roy. I personally am anal retentive about condition of my games (especially big $ games).  As i would only ever buy MC at a good price, I would more than happily open it right away.  I have done this with every/any game (even more expensive ones), damn expensive toys, whatever.  Seeing as I wouldnever pay a ridiculous price for it to begin with, I'd much rather open a sealed copy, then sell it, and wait/hope for a cheaper, more than likely lesser condition copy in the future.

No war needed nec lol.  Everyones entitled to their opinions, some are just more popular than others.  If you're anal retentive about the condition of your games I could understand opening one if you really wanted to play it and still have one in great condition.  I think the statement really hinges on one thing, the price.  It would be alot more likely for someone to open it if they found it for a killer deal.  I can't see anyone paying the current amount that it's been selling for and opening it.

once i buy a game it kind of never leaves the house again, so the supposed value of any game can suck it..

if i ever end up with doubles i usually just try to trade them for other crap I want, or i sell them for whatever someone offers half the time.

I'm mainly a gamer, but due to being friends with several big collectors (and running a retrogaming convention lol), I've definately become a collector. I have a lot of stuff (2000+ games), but ALL of them have been bought with the express intent of playing them. If they end up sucking, they sit on the shelf, but I enjoy having a big library to pull from for whatever mood strikes me.

Games are meant to be played. I do understand the collector mentality (being friends with two), and the ones I know keep the sealed games the way a museum might keep an exhibit. They see themselves as preserving these games for posterity, and eventually donating/creating a museum for the dawn of the gaming age. Not my cup of tea, but then again, I'm more of a player than a collector.

I will happily buy your Atari card that has 'Bobby' written on it in sharpie marker, so long as it works. Don't care about the box generally. I just want it to PLAY

Sounds like a lame museum, akin to a fine art museum where all the art is in packing crates with only a Polaroid pic taped to the outside to represent what's enclosed.

There are many things around that are used for things other than what they are intented.  Cars were just meant for transportation yet people have classics sitting in a showroom that are only for show.  Baseball cards were meant to be traded/collected yet kids like to stick them to their bicycle spokes to make a cool clicking sound.  Dirt bikes were intended to ride in the desert, not do backflips on.  The list is endless on things that are kept/used/done in ways other than they wern't intended.

Every game forum has the sealed argument and people that don't like sealed games.  Truth of the matter is, it's just people being judgemental.  Some like sealed games, some like boxed collections, some like case/manual/game/sleeve, some like game/manual, some like theirs loose.  Are any of them wrong?  NOPE.  It's personal preference.

Yes I agree, and it's all fine and dandy.  However it keeps regular gamers from playing game X that's sitting on a shelf in fancy plastic for people to oogle over.  Especially games that are low in print runs.  It makes a game even more scarce and it drives the price up more than it should be.  That person isn't even going to play the game.  Makes it even harder for a gamer to get game X.  It's personal preference yes, but that preference is lame.  My opinion of course.

If regular gamers only want to play it, there are other options other than trying to get an original copy.  Now if you the type that want's an original copy, I can see that.

IMO it's not so much about having an original copy, but being able to play on original hardware. Anyone can fire up their favorite emulator on the PC, but there's nothing like sitting on the couch in front of an old CRT with an original controller in hand. And usually you need an original copy of the game to do that.

Noones stopping you from buying a copy of any game and playing it.  Save your paycheck and go buy a game if you want one so bad.

As far as hoarding comment goes, that's pretty interesting.  Most of the people on this forum have 100+ games (and they cant play them all at once) so are they all hoarders too or are you just picking and choosing who to bitch at?  Either way whether a game is sealed or a game is open, it's still sitting on someones shelf somewhere.

Holy crap Roy has 1 copy of each game it's not like he's hoarding multiple copies of 1 game in his living room. now if he had say 10 copies of bonk and 10 copies of dungeon explorer etc etc now I would say he is hoarding but its not like he has a shitload of each game. You guys need to get over it his collection is awesome! plus he plays whenever he has company im a witness to that the man can game too he is way better at alot genres than I am.  really who cares anyway

Unless you've devised a way to play games while they're still sealed within their packaging, their sole purpose is for display (i.e. a piece for show).

You, apparently.  As does Roy with his continued justification (look it up Roy, it's exactly what you're doing) and his tired argument against him being a part of the problem of escalating prices.

Their sole purpose is the challenge of collecting them sealed for cheap.  Not to show them off.  I have done things AND bought many things worth showing off, having cardboard and plastic on a shelf doesn't rate with any of them.

if youve got multiple copies of stuff, and things to trade, it might be wise to make a thread or even a website keeping track of your inventory of whats good-to-go. maybe sell all the bulk stuff off independent of ebay.  websites are stupid easy to setup!  Hell even I managed it :-D

Finding out about tradeables via an argument is sorta doofy.

I repeat: if you keep sealed games on a shelf, they are utterly useless except for being looked at (or possibly as an investment, albeit a rather poor one).  If I have a painting on one wall created by myself and a Matisse on the opposite wall, does that mean that the former is something other than art?  It might be bad art, especially so by comparison, but art nonetheless; their relative value as showpieces is entirely irrelevant, as it has no bearing on what they are.

Do you not understand the laws of supply and demand?  New games aren't being manufactured, so the supply remains constant; by buying multiple copies of the same title, you've artificially inflated demand; therefor, yes you've clearly raised its value.  I'm not claiming that you've single handedly made some huge impact on the price of games, but you are a part of the big picture.  Similarly, a single reseller on ebay (such as Gamesquad) can't truly exert much control over values, but when you get enough like minded people together you end up with the skewed market we 'enjoy' today.

Ok, I see a ton of truth in this.  I agree I am part of the bigger picture, I'll even go so far as to say I play a TINY bit more of a part in it since I like sealed games also.  I also agree with your statement about Gamesquad and the like minded people.  Where I see a little difference is in where the blame lies.  Is it really the sellers or the buyers that are the problem?  If a game sits up there and noone buys it at a high price, won't the seller be forced to lower the price eventually since it never sells (this is for "buy it now" auctions)?  If it does sell at the high price its more the buyers fault for paying the inflated price and not being patient and waiting for an auction isn't it?

As for regular auctions.  That's purely driven by the buyer.  If the price goes through the roof then that's clearly what it is worth to those specific buyers.

I guess basically what I am saying is if the buyers stopped paying the high prices and the games didn't sell then the sellers would be forced to lower their prices or just not sell anything.  I think the buyers are just as much to blame as the sellers are.

I'll agree that foolish buyers are also part of the problem, but not equally so.  There are quite a few ebay sellers with overinflated prices that seem perfectly content to wait for a sucker to bite.  They keep relisting their overpriced wares, numbing buyers to their silly prices, and consequently driving up the price for all auctions of the same title.

I truly don't see a point to collecting sealed games.

Quote from: dictionaryVIDEO GAME:    any of various games played using a microcomputer with a keyboard and often joysticks to manipulate changes or respond to the action or questions on the screen.
What part of that says "stick on shelf and stare at it".  What if this was back in the day?  Would you buy all the games new and leave them sealed and never touch them?  The answer had better be "no".  And then my next question is, what makes it so different today other than the lame, assumed "1337" factor of boasting your sealed game collection to the rest of the internets.

I can only imagine the reaction of developers back then if they were told these kind of things.

They didn't slave away for hours on end so that their finished product can sit on a shelf still sealed.....

I mean, collecting sealed games, profiteering, and all of that is an insult to the entire gaming scene.  Especially the retro stuff.

this is also precisely why Insanity wasn't shrink wrapped.  I didn't want some wiseass eBaying sealed copies 10 years from now for some obnoxious amount.  That being said, if anyone ever sees sealed copies of Insanity, alert me so I can locate and bludgeon the seller. :)

They're all unsealed.  Worthless to collectors!  Good!  :-D

This is nothing new.  You don't like it, ok.  Some will never understand it.  You do things your way I'll do them mine.  The only difference is that some can't respect other peoples choices with what they do with their own shit.

The definition of collection appears to say material accumulated in one location.  However it obviously doesn't specify the state in which the object has to be in.

Stamps were meant as postage for letters yet people collect those.  Imagine what the reaction of the creators would be like if they were told these kind of things!

Stamps have already been used, or if they weren't, are eventually past the point of being useful.  Unclaimed hats will be claimed and WORN either way, and books on Churchill will be read.

Its safe to assume these "collections" have objects that were all used properly at one given point.  Other collections may be based off of items that are MEANT to be collected in the state they're in (baseball cards).

It is impossible to use a sealed game properly.

Stamp creators collect stamps.  Stamps are mass produced, easy to obtain, and only become rare/scarce after decades go by.  They aren't sealed.  They're dirt cheap.

And as was said, they were either used as postage and then collected, or they were SO MASS PRODUCED IT DOESNT MATTER IF PEOPLE ARE HOLDING ON TO EM.

I think alot of the problem is when someone as new to the PCE scene (and possibly the entire retro scene) as yourself shows up and starts going about things in an invasive way.  I mean you have been posting at PCEFX for less than a year and have already earned the nickname Roy "big money" Vegas.  It is kind of a slap in the face to people who have been doing this for awhile.

You show up and turn being a PC Engine fan into a money based RAER-hunt.  It appears that the collecting is more important than the gaming, and thats a turn off for alot of people.

I guess all I really have to ask is, did you really HAVE to have Magical Chase?    was it a game you've been keen on playing and owning ever since you were younger?

or was it the "OMG RAER" factor that drove you to it?    If it were as easy to obtain as Keith courage, would you have still gone apeshit about getting it?   I doubt it...

you'd probably pass sealed copies of it up if it were just another Keith Courage.

I just now thought about this, but my Neo Geo AES collection is worth around $8000. I nice chunk is due to a US KOF2000 ($1200-$1500) and US Mark of The Wolves ($600-$700). Then add that to my Neo CD collection at $1000. I have at least 10 carts that are worth $200-$250. With that money, I would actually have a complete TG-16 collection, plus some PCE games to boot. Keep in mind, this was done over 10 years with the AES and 13 years with the CD. On the bright side, I spent $5000 to get the carts, which gives me a $2000 bonus if I were to sell. Fun system to hunt down carts, especially when you get good deals. It is also scary, as there are good counterfeits on the expensive ones now.

BTW, I play the shit out of these games, but I take really good care of them. Hell even on my PS1 + PS2 I spent probably $15,000 over the years. Same goes for CDs and DVD at god knows what amount. I just never really thought about it like that. I just really like buying good games. I do admit, that nowadays I don't spend more than $150 for a game, period. I just don't care to fork that kinda cash now.

I fully understand the concept of collecting.  I really am not trying to put you down for collecting games.  The sealed games are a slightly different story, especially from a developer-standpoint.

Nah man, not "everybody" wants MC, nor do most (or even majority) of the folks here want a full collection of Turbo/PCE games.  In fact, I'd argue that's for a very small number of folks here.  I think that's one of the key things that separates a "collector" to a "gamer".  My intrinsic playing value for MC is about $10 -- that's what I'd *maybe* pay for it, because that's what it's worth to me as "gamer".

I'll just end my part of the conversation since it never seems to progress anywhere anyway.

For your info though NecroPhile, Guyjin gave me that nickname directly after I bought the 3 Girls Games on eBay.  If I recall, I was childishly talking about what I would be willing to pay for them in the chat before the auction ended.   It had NOTHING to do with Magical Chase as I didn't even own it then.  Guyjin would have to confirm that but I 99% sure on the timeframe.

I think they make the comments because what I like to do with my collection is unpopular for many reasons.  I can see the points of view that people have with it and to an extent I can partly agree with some of the issues.  I don't think it's like a personal vendetta or anything like that, I think I'm just a guy who happens to be vocal when people have something to say about the way I collect.  Being that I'm the person thats vocal, I get the backlash.

Yet to be fair (and I don't mean this as a dig)...you released one game, on your own time table, with little financial risk.  You had no deadlines, corporate BS, etc.  You can obviously speak of your experience, but that's hardly a norm.    Some devs prob do really care about the "gamer" aspect, but a vast majority are more worried about the $/#'s/deadlines.  OF COURSE they'll gush in interviews/documentaries...what you expect them to say "screw gamers/enjoyment we give 2 shits less"??  Not saying they're all "heartless", but in reality it's still a buisness for them.

I think this is more the viewpoint of the publishers.  They gave the developers money to make their game, and they're going to want to see a return on that investment.  Hence, hiring marketing and PR folk to talk the game up in interviews.  The actual developers themselves are gamers, believe me.  Suits don't make games.

Don't fool yourself..yes they are gamers, but they are still a BUSINESS.  They need to make deadlines, stay on budget...they are still "suits" to one degree or another.  They may "care" more than the publishers, but in the end if they treat it more as "let's do what the gamers want" vs. "let's run a profitable business and listen to the the publishers demands to a T"  they won't last long, and games would see more delays. etc. (Working Designs anyone?..you know a real "gamer company/give the fans what they want").
Title: Re: Are you a gamer? Collector? Both?
Post by: Raizen1984 on 01/26/2010, 11:20 AM
Well, Working Designs was just a publisher/localization house.  They didn't actually develop games there, which makes your comparison a bit odd.  The publisher needs to concentrate on the money, so WDs priorities were obviously misplaced.

The developers are the artists.  It's their creativity that attracts the interest of the publishers in the first place.  They are the only one's concerned with money, because they made the investment.

Here's an example: When Tim Schafer ditched Activision and became publisher-less for a while because the "suits" wanted him to make Brutal Legend a Guitar Hero spin-off, was he thinking about the money or his creative vision?
Title: Re: Are you a gamer? Collector? Both?
Post by: nectarsis on 01/26/2010, 11:42 AM
WHile WD was a publisher/localization comapny..they tampered with most games, they were halfway devs..not ground up work, but still.  Someone quiting because of their "vision vs $" is again hardly indicative of the industry at large.  I already said some/not all, etc.  Many have their "morals/limits/whatever"...but thinking a majority of devs are in for the "love" vs $ is naive.  They may love what they do, be in it for the right reasons, but making $, etc. is the main reason.

Look at ARk..he was pretty much a one man show, he made his game for "love of the game" if you will.  If all these devs aren't concerned with making the $/sales, etc, why aren't more of them independents?
Title: Re: Are you a gamer? Collector? Both?
Post by: Arkhan Asylum on 01/26/2010, 12:17 PM
theyre not independents because a small team on a new console is not so great, and then you have licensing, and all of that crap to deal with.

The PC Engine doesn't really have any of that stuff to worry about.

Look at a company like Origin.  Granted they are disbanded now (due to EA's outside interference).  They definitely put the gamers, and the quality of games first.  :)   When EA came and imposed deadlines and started screwing with their flow, is when Origin tanked.   They didn't even get to finish Ultima VIII!

No.  Like nectarsis noted, both parties are concerned about making money.  Developers crave success, for if a game tanks, they'll have a hard time securing financing for their next project; if the bombing continues, they'll find himself out of business and coding for someone else.

Wrong; it's the potential for profitability that attracts publishers.  Creativity and originality do not equal profitability, especially if the game goes way over budget or is oft delayed.

yes...  but youre leaving out the part where paying attention to quality and worrying about the player is intrinsic to the success of their project!   I never said they werent worried about success.  The smart developers listen to their audience, and often are part of the audience.

Creativity and Originality can equal profit.  Katamari?

Game designers/developers are artists in their own right.  As long as there is a promising project, publishers dig it.

bah.  Origin let EA acquire them as at the time EA was *the* publisher.  OSI was plenty successful on their own (Ultima VII?)...  what ended up happening is the big wigs at EA didn't know dick about role playing games and ran OSI into the ground.  Hell after OSI officially disbanded ( on my damn birthday no less), and they stopped having a direct role in UO, the game took a lame ass nose dive.

The OSI + EA maneuver was a bad move that seemed like a great idea.... good ol' hindsight.

oh come on. Everyone knows most of the time the suits are out of touch with reality and people wonder HOW they got there in the first place.   Dilbert's pointy haired boss sums that concept up entirely.

Hell half the reason so many games today are released and turn out to be average, so-so, cookie cutter games, is because thats what sells.  Deadlines show up and developers are forced to omit/scrap things and get it out the door.   Ever notice that the games that get delayed a few times end up being the ones that stand out? :-D

Back to OSI, a former OSI employee ended up releasing the content for Ultima VIII that didn't make it in, as a free patch.

after that gets added in, the game has alot more going for it. lol

Publishers VERY often pick products to fund based more on potential profitability than "interesting". True no game is a guarantee, but there's "safer bets".  Hence why we see so many rehashes/remakes, umpteen sequels to established properties, and cookie cutter games.  There is still obviously originality in modern gaming(Ark bringing up Katamari is a good example).  Compare the glut of same old same old games vs. truly unique properties these days...that shows what publishers, even devs aim for.

Exactly my point; budgets and deadlines often take priority over everything else.  It doesn't matter who sets the budget or deadline, as the developer will usually scale back the game to meet those goals, else they risk losing their jobs and/or funding for future projects.

You're mistaken if you think that creativity is the only (or even primary) yardstick used to pick future projects.  You stated that developers don't care about profitability, but if they have a reputation for blowing budgets and missing deadlines (i.e. - hurting profitability), what are their chances for getting financial backing?  I've no doubt that developers adjust their artistic vision and/or project scope to maintain profitability and stay within the publisher's good graces.

I am definitely more of a gamer, but I do collect. I have a bunch of old consoles such as the Atari 2600/5200/7800 that do not really get any playing time, but I like to collect for. I really enjoy displaying them and looking at them sit beautifully on my shelf. I would say I'm definitely more of a gamer though. A lot of people obsess over complete in packaged games, but not me. Would I like a game to be in a box instead of loose? Of course, but I'm not going to spend double the price for boxed one when I could get a perfectly nice conditioned loose one. It is all about the game for me.

P.S I like the Av nectarsis. Brandon Jennings is a stud.

I was always a gamer at heart, but for awhile, I was also a hardcore collector.  Meaning that I would just buy games that I really had no intention of ever playing and just let them sit on my shelf.  When I worked at EB, we occasionally had unannounced sales on PS2/Xbox games where brand-new games would be marked down to under $10 for maybe a day or so (nothing good, mind you).  I would just buy this stuff and leave it sealed for God knows why.  But after a number of years, I had a change of heart and decided to only buy and keep what I knew I would play.  So I sold off over 400 titles that I can definitely live without.

So yeah, I can definitely say that I'm more of a 'gamer' and far less of a 'collector' nowadays.  However, when I buy games, I usually prefer them to be CIB... :D
