Title: Draw Muhammad Day
Post by: Ceti Alpha on 05/20/2010, 09:48 AM
Today is apparently "Draw Muhammad Day". It stems from the Danish cartoonist who got murdered for depicting Muhammad with a bomb as a his turban, though it is more of a direct response to the censorship by Comedy Central of a South Park episode that makes fun of Muhammad. The "movement" claims that it is doing this to protect free speech, but I don't buy it. I personally couldn't give a rat's ass about whether or not people draw him, but this DMD just smacks of an excuse to be a dick. I mean, where were all these so-called defenders of free speech when "To Kill a Mockingbird" was banned? Hell, maybe Europe should have a "Read Mein Kampf Day", or a "Watch 'When You Wish Upon a Weinstein... Day (Family Guy episode about Jewish stereotypes)". Maybe we should organize a "Have an Abortion Day" to protect the rights of women and defend the honour of the doctors who were shot and killed by radical Christians for performing the abortions.

Anyway, here's my artistic depiction of the prophet:

They were busy opposing the ban. It just didn't make national news because hardly anyone gave a shit. And now, in this day of oversensitive, easily-offended blowhards, anything remotely controversial makes headlines because news agencies need their ratings more than ever.

Because, you know, he's dead.  Although I doubt he has a real grave anywhere that still exists.

EDIT:  I may have spelled his name incorrectly (I've also seen it as "Mohammed") but the intent is still there.

I'd like to hear from rags or keranu on the different sects and if they're allowed to depict Muhammad.

People are free to do whatever they want. It doesn't bother me, unless maybe the artist is purposely trying to be obnoxious then that is a little uncalled for, but they are still entitled to draw whatever they wish. As far as I know, there is nothing in the Quran or Hadith that says prophets can't be depicted.

P.S.: I like tats depiction the best so far!

Yeah, I figured that was the case. From what I've read, Shia Muslims don't have any tradition regarding depictions of Mohammad, and that Sunnis have pretty much created their own law/tradition around that. In any case, like you said, the Koran doesn't explicitly forbid it.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to be a dick with this thread as I think this whole Draw Mohammad Day is nonsense and nothing good can come out of it. It strikes me as an excuse for closet racists and bigots to express themselves. Some of the drawings I've seen posted are pretty obscene. As an atheist I really want nothing to do with it.

Thanks though Keranu. I honestly don't know many Muslims, so it's nice to get information straight from the source. :)

I would think it would be more for people to prove how rediculous these radical fucks can be and that no matter what the dipshits do, they can't intimidate us.

It could be a bit of both.

I can't respect any religion that uses its teachings as an excuse to commit acts of murder or extreme violence against another living being.  If you really want people to respect your religion, you need to learn to respect the opinions of others first.  That's my take.

As for the whole "Draw Mohammed" hulabaloo, I could care less about the whole thing.  In the end, he's still the prophet of Islam and Islam will still be Islam.  I don't see how a depiction will automatically destroy Islam altogether.  Some people seriously need to lighten up.
