TWO real sticks not nubs to...front/back cameras, touch main screen, and touch pad on back, 3G, and wifi, 5" OLED screen...
So, they took a bunch of stuff already made famous by companies that are as innovative as Sony used to be, and crammed it into a box that is guaranteed to lose money. Again. Go Sony!
Did they actually shoot for 3rd place with this thing? If so, there is nothing wrong with that, but its an odd strategy for a company so large and so used to mainstream success.
And fuck them for taking the name NGP, Now WTF am I supposed to call the Neo Geo Pocket?
Well NGP is just the codename so you can breathe easy ;)
Im buying 3.
One to play with, one to keep pristine, and one to splooge all over every night.
oh great the NeoGeo Pocket! SNK/PLAYMORE WILL SUE!!! lol
Flash this time and no UMDs - I wonder if Sony has finally learned its lesson on creating proprietary formats that serve little purpose other than to answer a question that nobody asked.
It doesn't look like the buttons are real (especially the d-pad). I want real buttons I can push and, more importantly, FEEL!
Other pics (clicky (http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-psp2-ngp-eyes-on/#3823351)) make 'em look more like 'real' buttons.
Sold. Hurry up, Amazon, I am ready to pre-order this baby.
I will probably get to see it soon. My company will be making games for it.

Yeah, it will have no format all, that's
so much better. The raging success of the PSPGo proves this.
WTF?

How is a cartridge of some sort
not a format?
So they'll be on flash cards of sorts? Wonder how the homebrew scene will be on em :P
I really wish sony success, but i don't know about this one...
it just seems like it will get edged out by cell phones again...

Maybe... but cell phones are still mostly relying on touch controls which quite frankly suck for most traditional style games.

Yet you stated NO format at all. :P Proprietary =/= lack of a media format. Considering Sony already has multiple variations of their own memory stick (proprietary) + this new format I see no real issues.

true, but to your average jackass, that doesn't matter.
imo, most people don't care, as long as it's shiny and new.
Virtually all cartridges are proprietary, certainly anything from Sony will be as they are the only manufacturer of proprietary flash media I know of. I fail to see how a UMD is any more or less universal than a Memory Stick. Sure, you can put the Memory stick in a camera or something, but only Sony's camera, which I wouldn't recommend buying for this very reason (also, the proprietary USB cable, charger, etc).
But you are saying this thing will in fact take cartridges? I was looking for that sort of info but couldn't find it. I assumed the games were all download only like PSPGo or iPhone, thus, my "no format" comment. Putting stuff out on carts will make this thing slightly less doomed since at least stores will be excited about carrying it.

They announced it using some form of flash memory carts early into the press conference, and on most major game sites covering it. ;)
But the real question is.. has it been hacked yet!?! If it cant play turbo / pce games... [-(
If I can make calls on it, or use Skype, then I am definitely in.
The lack of 3D has me thinking even though it is prettier, it is last gen. The dual analog sticks are great though.
...who am I kidding, I'll get it at launch. Though I am with some of you, I really really hate the Neo Geo Pocket code name. Just call it the fucking PSP2 already. Just like they won't call their new phone the "Playstation Phone." Fuck that noise.
I'm waiting for the Playstation Phone to come out. Android OS+Playstation Store+Slide out PS control pad+SD Cards=I'll take it.

Last gen? I've played the 3DS, it's nothing to rave about. I was in England at Toy Fair & Activision was there, I got to try out Lego Star Wars at it, it was neat, sure, but, not mindblowing. And the guy(whose a tester) freely admitted that you will get sick playing the 3DS, as he did!
Oh, & I just found that Falcom is aboard for making games for the NGP!!! That right there sold me!

Lets not forget that Sony made a smart move switching to ARM using a 4 core Cortex A9. That's a very impressive ARM processor. Not to mention the 4 core PowerVR GPU they are using. I'm glad sony ditched the mips processor finally. I like the back touch pad as well. I'm guessing that the new sony handheld can only play psp games downloaded from the psn. That kinda sucks cause it's going to be emulated. Not to mention you have to re-purchase games. I hope there's going to be some decent games shown for it at E3.
QUIT CALLING IT THE NGP!
It's a god damn PSP 2!

Lost cause, man. People still say "PSX" for some reason, even though that name was eventually taken by an actual Sony product.
I know, I know. People called the Gamecube "GCN" as well (Gamecube Nintendo?). Except "NGP" means "Next Generation Portable" when it is CLEARLY a PSP2. Even worse, NGP rightfully stands for Neo Geo Pocket. Would you call it the NES (Next Entertainment system from Sony)?
No company with any sense of self preservation would take the NES acronym. Nintendo still makes major money off that system and would sue the shit out of them. NGP on the other hand...gets no respect. :( Not from Sony, not from SNK, nobody.
It was a great system with the best ratio of good/bad games since...since the original Neo Geo (probably better, really) and it lived a DC-sized lifespan.
Actually, I should mention that the one example I can think of that seems to indicate respect for the NGP on a corporate level is actually the original Warioware for GBA. Not only is it a lot like Ganbare NeoPoke-kun, but one of the characters (a big dog) seems to be wearing a hat with the NGP's "P" logo on it.
As for GCN: this...perplexes me. In a case that is exactly the opposite of the "PSX" thing, this actually is official Nintendo cannon (outside of Japan only, to my knowledge) and its really fucking dorky. I can't believe people actually use the term "GCN" when they talk about the Cube. The acronym was actually chosen specifically to avoid confusion with the NGP (true story) which was still semi-current at the time.
I always just said GC. No need for the N. But everybody kept saying GCN, GCN. So whenever I reviewed a GameCube game over at the-magicbox, I always made sure to have a special box cover in the review, like so:
Subtle, but that was my method of doing battle against the GCN people.
What's funny is that I wrote to Nintendo asking about this (yes, I am an ass) and was wondering if they could provide reasoning. They just basically said that was the official acronym. They also let on that the GameBoy advance was NOT GBA like most people believe, but in fact it was really called AGS. I had my own acronym for that... WTF?
At one time I actually had an internal Nintendo PDF explaining exactly the terminology for talking about the GC in a professional sense. They always wrote NINTENDO GAMECUBE in full caps. The only other official way to refer to it was GCN. I'll see if I can find that.
Its similar to how every fucking time you save in a PS2 game you see "Now Checking Memory Card (8MB) PS2 ™" or something else verbatim.
EDIT: A friend found it for me!

Meh, I always think of the NGPC when it comes to SNK's system personally.
Good thing that Nintendo took steps to spell that out. I don't think the GameCube would have been the RAGING SUCCESS it was if not for the steps provided by that memo. All caps? Dumbasses.
The NINTENDO GAMECUBE might not have seemed like a success on our end, but it was actually rather profitable.
/95wwi1.png
Massively profitable, really, compared to the Xbox, which to this day hasn't turned dime one.
Rather than developing unreliable bleeding edge hardware and basically paying the customer to take it so they can be #1 in sales, they would rather just be profitable.
AvP engine running on a PSP2. (http://www.tomsguide.com/us/-Aliens-vs-Predator-Sony-NGP-PSP2,news-10018.html)
Pretty impressive horsepower, though at half the pixels that the consoles are running at (720p+). "Last gen", eh? I wonder if the 3DS could manage the same feat, even with less than half the pixels of a PSP2.
I think it looks pretty great, but I'm concerned about hand cramps. I can't play any of the portables for more than 20-30 minutes without my hands turning into claws.
