What a shame, that was one game I had my eye on. Is it a good conversion?
I remember the Amiga version was very good, but was missing the final 3 islands of the arcade due to space constraints.
I have the NES and PC Engine versions. The graphics are better on the PCE and there are Bosses at the end of each stage (unlike the NES version). It's been a while since I've played them so I'm not sure if there are any other differences (or even how they compare to the arcade or Amiga versions).
the pce can be considered as arcade perfect, if there weren't those little loading gaps at the end of each stages when you reach the top platform.
the red book audio (sampled arcade music) sounds bit flat as well.
but at least you still get the original somewhere over the rainbow track, unlike the mega drive and later versions.
Apparantly the PCE version is also the ONLY console version (at least of the era) with the 3 secret islands.
So basically, I HAVE to get it!

That's for certain!
Great game, I love it!
I have a second spare copy I might be willing to part with, it's mint and complete with spine and reg card.
Actually scrub that just seen Adol is selling one on ebay for £43.93 which is actually quite a reasonable 'Buy it Now' price, I would of been looking for a little more than that for my copy.

Nice, thanks for the heads up. Might STILL be too expensive for me though. I don't think I've ever paid that much for a game.
so you never bought a new game in your life before?
cheaper than €49 is sheer impossible for a rainbow islands nowadays.

sure, probably best then to wait it out for an Auction to turn up and try and maybe snag a bargain.

The last "new" game I got was Modern Warfare 2 for £25 I think. I'm probably just insanely lucky, but I've never paid more than that much for a game. the highest priced ones have been ~£25 for some release date PSP titles, and beyond that we're going back to the days of the Spectrum and Amiga where £25 was seen as reasonable.
True story: I picked up a PAL copy of secret of Mana for 50p.

Some of the very best must have PC Engine games you would have to part with over £25.
But saying that there are still tons of great titles to get for cheaps
Yeah, I don't mind around £25 for the really good ones. For example CD/PC Denjin.
And for the Hucards, I don't really mind boxed or not, so that's not too bad. I think I paid £7 for Super Star Soldier, and that's a great game!

if it was boxed £7 is a bargain for Super Star Soldier
Yeh off the top of my head a few other great games you can get for under £25 are:
GunHed
Soldier Blade (is around £25)
Jackie Chan
Aero Blasters
Parodius
Bomberman '94 (really good in multi player)
Genji Tsushin Agedama
Hana Taaka Daka (is around £25)
Legend Of Hero Tonma
R-TYPE I & II
Nice, thanks for the list. A couple were in mind already, and I have Bomberman '94 (<3 bomberman)
better get bomberman '93 ;)
it's even cheaper and he best bm ever :D

I WANTS THE KANGAROOS!!! :D I have '93 on the Wii, and I was very disappointed that I was actually thinking of '94.
Both 93 and 94 are now available on the Wii Virtual Console.
I think after reading this thread, I have to play some Rainbow Islands this weekend since it has been so long.

cool, if you've got a wants list PM it over I might have a few of the titles you're looking for.
:D
Rainbow islands is a strange port! It was released 6 years after the arcade release, and that didn't help PCE's image.
I think, same goes for Strider and Tatsujin. No matter how good these games were, this is not a wise decision!
Whereas the Snes/genesis were getting current arcade titles (when they did), we were seeing stone age arcade ports on the PCE.
I think this is one of the reasons why SNES eventually overtook the PCE.
NEC should have known better.....

So these are the only three arcade ports that matter, and the other PCE arcade ports (such as the NeoGeo titles) that were often superior to the ports on the MD/SF don't count. You're a genius!
I don't think porting these titles after such a long gap was a good idea! [-X
Just get Bubble Bobble / Rainbow Island for the Sega Saturn. It is the ultimate version of each game, and it should cost about USD $20.
Why is it expensive?
Because people are assholes.
Depending on what Konami does, Bomberman 94 was going to be coming to PSN with trophies, but, with them supposedly cancelling all of Hudson's projects, it's up in the air on what's gonna happen.

A loose Saturn with a controller is about $30? Combined, you get one of the best systems ever made, and the definitive versions of Rainbow Islands and Bubble Bobble for $50. Beats paying more than that for just Rainbow Islands.

NAH, BM'93 is so superior! fuck those kangaroo farkers
:)
Tatsujin is weird. He thinks BM 93 is the best Bomberman, Super Star Soldier is the best Soldier game, etc..... And he has ten copies each of those "Bikini Girls" discs. I think he was dropped on his head as a child.
I know for certain that I'm by far not alone with my opinion about BM'93 :)
And super star soldier is only the 2nd best soldier game. which also makes it the 2nd worst :)
Unfortunately only 4 copies left :(

Well, Bomberman '93 is fantastic. So we can't fault him there. SSS certainly isn't my favorite, but, to each his own.
EXCEPT when it comes to the Bikini Girls garbage... that
alone is reason to mock him.
:)
