I'm really wary of modding my GT, or even allowing someone else to do it, as it's been with me so long. However to be really usable, it does need its caps replacing, and white LED backlighting may be good too, if possible.
There is a guy on eBay(.co.uk) who charges £15 to replace the caps; has anyone used his service? Maybe someone knows him. Also, is it possible to replace the backlight with LEDs?
