already years ago i started with listing all shoot'em ups available on the PC Engine. the list now is grown up to 110 titles.
also i add the few pseudo shmups like after burner, space harrier, thunder blade and space fantasy zone to the list. imo they're pure classic shoot'em ups, even they're optically not kept in consistent and pure horizontal/vertical 2D. also counted Wonderboy III - Monster lair, since almost 50% is pure shooting as well as the jumping levels are scrolling automatically and the main task is shoot all you can as well!
me myself owning 107 out of that list at the moment, still missing darius alpha (only because its high price) and Soldier blade special (because i couldn't find it yet).
I believe this list is nearly 100% complete. other titles would only be some mixed bastards with a less portion of shooting than Monster lair offers.
anyway please check it out and add some comments as well some, eventually forgotten titles. surprise me^^

Cool, this will come in handy.
Oooh, Dead Moon... I remember wanting to get that game back in the day but I never was able to. That's another one for the list.
Another one you might want to add is Veigues Tactical Gladiator, a favorite of mine when I was a kid. Although you're in a giant robot instead of a spaceship, the game play is more like a side-scrolling shooter than a platform game IMO. You just have to stay on the ground most of the time, and your character and the enemies are bigger.
dead moon already is containing, of course^^ i also try to list up the japanese names of the titles (or subtitles).
Veigues Tactical Gladiator imo is much more a jump'n shoot than a shoot' em up. sorry, i can't add this one. but you're very free to add it on your own list of shoot'em ups :)
may other people also don't like to see monster lair or after burner type shmups on the list ;)
Thanks for the list, and yah Buster dead moon is a good shooter -- was unexpectedly surprised when I got it. :)
surely, it isn't in the upper class of PCE shmups, but it's a solid shooter with some nice locations and parallax :)
Quote from: "Tatsujin"dead moon already is containing, of course^^
Sorry, I meant it's another one for my list of games to buy.
QuoteVeigues Tactical Gladiator imo is much more a jump'n shoot than a shoot' em up. sorry, i can't add this one.
Since the scrolling is automatic, it seems more like a shooter to me. Plus pressing left on the d-pad makes you move left but you're still facing right like in a side-scrolling shooter. The only part that's like a platformer is the jumping aspect, really. And even that is sort of more like a shooter, since you press up on the d-pad and not the I or II button to jump, and when you get your boosters powered up all the way you fly for 10 seconds or so instead of jump.
OK, in a way you're right. have to play it once again and will judge it :)

You know what might also be interesting? We could create a second list of all the games that contain shoot-em-up
segments in them! Some of the games would overlap with your list...
Updated (08.03):Monster Lair (Boss sequence for every stage)
Bravoman (Stages 2 and _____ ) *
Final Zone II (Stage 2 and ____ ) *
* Off the top-of-my-head I can't recall the exact stages
And there is Cychorider (or something like that), that was a bonus game (shooter demo) included on the Mook version of Anearth Fantasy Stories.
------------ Clarification Required -------------------
Also, isn't there a horizontal shoot-em-up demo on one of the Ultra Box volumes?
And, isn't there yet another title that includes a vertical shoot-em-up as a hidden game? It's a very basic shoot-em-up (but it keeps score, IIRC) and you have to enter a code to access it...
And... the "Hudson School" CD supposedly has a shoot-em-up demo on it, according to Thibaut (in a recent post here at these boards)...

and I could not help but notice that Meteor Blaster DX is not on the list. Phhhhhhht!

I think if you're going to put Monster Lair on the list you should have Veigues as well since the same argument can be used to justify both :)

Don't forget the AMAZING shooting Levels in Shockman(Shubibinman2)!!
LOL, just making more work for you aren't we....LOL
Shockman= HUGELY underrated game!
TurboSage
You're perfectly right Turbo Sage, Shubibiman 2 is just great. :D
Ne-ne-ne-necro-bump! :D
So, how updated is this list?
I want to create a list of easy, moderate, hard, and expert (Tatsujin) shoot-'em-ups for the TG-16 & PC Engine, which I will start that thread before too long, but I must have good data with which to do so.
To build on my own earlier post (from 7 years ago?!?! Holy sh*t!)....
I still want (and would love) a comprehensive list of
Shooters-within-other-games:
1. Mesopotamia/Somer Assault (enter code for a basic vertical shooter, Easter egg. Here I am, in 2013, identifying my next-to-last mystery game from 2006).
2. Yo, Bro has a shoot-em-bonus stage (or two), a horizontal scrolling feast for TG-16 fans...
3. Shadow of the Beast has a horizontal shoot-em-up level (Beast with a Jetpack)...
Otherwise, I still want everything in my initial post verified!

TATSUJIN WANTS TO COMPLETE THIS LIST FOR ME! HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE! HE WANTS THE LIST COMPREHENSIVE AND COMPLETE. HELL YES. :pcgs:
Ghost Manor has a shooter section at the end.
I don't remember the flying sections of Tailspin very well, but they may be shooterish.
Shapeshifter also has a shooter section at the end.
Yeah, level 7? of Tailspin is a shoot-'em-up level.

Xak I & II has schump sections.
Youkai Douchuki boss fights have you flying around firing bullets at various enemies and the boss.
Vasteel's battles usually involve flying mechs that shoot and often are ships as much as robots. The base battles are similar to the first stage of Thunderforce II.

Jim Power has schumping stages as well.

Lol, 7 years
I have added two more shewties into MY "official" list of PCE shewters since then.
One sure was Cychorider and one other I have to find out right now..lol.
That would make a nice number of 111 shewties.
At the moment there are only 110 registered on PCE Daisakusen, because Cychorider is still not in the database:
http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/27/list-games-Shmups-1-0-100-name-asc-0.htm
Force Gear would be also a tempted title to add, but which is really just a sub game of a game and not an individual title.

So, if we were to break this list down into vertical shoot-'em-ups, horizontal shoot-'em-ups, hybrid (Salamander, Mr. Heli, etc...), platformer shoot-'em-ups (Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair - I usually call this style run-'n-gun, myself.), and whatever other styles, then how would these break down?

The second half of each level in Monster Lair is a traditional horizontal shooter. Only the first part is run-and-gun. It strays from the other WB games in that sense. :)

True that. You got me. I usually try to play new games that I get for 1-5 minutes, just to test them, but since I usually get games in 4-10 at a time, I usually don't have enough time to play them much more than that. Then, later when I have several hours to game with, I'll pull out a game that I want to play and try to play through it. I'm currently up to almost 30 TG-16/PC Engine games that I've beaten in the last year, so my average seems to be beating one game every two weeks. Of course, I do play some multi-player games (Bomberman and such) with my kids and friends in-between beating games.
Anyway, I'd like to break down the shoot-'em-up games list into sub-genre (horizontal, vertical, etc...) and then try to classify the easiest shoot-'em-ups versus the most difficult ones.
What did John Brandstetter call Lords of Thunder in that interview? A "DVH shooter"?

Whenever I think of that video, I like to re-imagine it similar to the final panel of the first Johnny Turbo comic. But instead of a screen shot of Gate of Thunder appearing behind him as he declares Lords of Thunder the "Turbo Game of the Month!", I think of a window of video playing behind him, with footage of the dozens of pre-existing horizontal shooters which also scrolled vertically and diagonally... or perhaps an extended version, with looping video of his dumbstruck reaction to the host dismissing Lords as "just a typical shooting game", and the extended HVD games footage including all the
non-horizontal shooters which happen to scroll horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Was it desperation that led TTi/Jonathan to push the nonsense about VHD? Oh well...this reminds me, what should we call the category for Axelay? I think VHD doesn't quite capture everything Konami achieved in Axelay...

HELL YES.
I'm going to use that in the official PCE list-o-shooters. You think I'm joking. I'm not.
Psycho Chaser is a shooter, of sorts. What sub-genre does it belong to?
Psycho Chaser is strange and I love it.
Psycho Chaser is a sprint 'em up, commonly refered to as "Shprumps".
Aftetburner, Space Harrier, etc are 3rd person shooters.
Battle Ace, Faceball, etc are 1st person shooters.
Spriggan gets categorized in the Awesome'up section.

REGARDLESS: We are going to use VHD as an official sub-genre of shoot-em-ups. :pcgs:

It's not the worst shoot-em-up on the PCE. It's average, I suppose. The intro is amusing, if you are into scatalogical/stupid humor.

I'm going to use that in the official PCE list-o-shooters. You think I'm joking. I'm not.
Psycho Chaser is a shooter, of sorts. What sub-genre does it belong to?
Sorry, I was thinking of Metal Stoker. :P

(1) Yes! Another one! (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.png)
(2) Ha!, SNES/SFC was starved for shoot-em-ups, which is a damn shame. (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)
This thread should be stickied. Aside from being worthwhile, it is also difficult to search for.

Please do! Because I'm tempted to just copy it all into a word document for now.
This thread still needs to be stickied. Maybe Necromancer can finally do it now that he has the power? [-o<

I FORGOT ABOUT THIS!!!!
I am making a page, but I'll need help from folks gathering assets (screenshots, art) and fact-checking.
More importantly...WOOOHOOO! Shootemups.
ULTRABOX ULTRASHOOTEMBOX.
UPDATE: I actually have a 1-2 projects I am working on inspired by this thread. I'll be able to share with you soon. (I am not going to break my promise from 05.2014!)
I created a very clunky page ("just for me") but I am happy to share it with the 1-2 people who will find it useful.
CLARIFICATION: I still need clarification/2+ clean screenshots (no watermarks) of shoot-em-up segments in...
Fray (?)
Ultra box 3 & 5 (I'd like 2+ screenshots, no watermarks)
Ghost Manor (at least one additional screenshot of final boss battle...I already snagged one from Duomazov).
Etc.

Someone can correct any mistakes I make... But there aren't too many 2-player co-op...
Aeroblasters (special mega beam weapon only available when two player join together)
Forgotten Worlds (2 people control together...not a "true" 2-player co-op in the traditional sense)
Burning Angels?
Hellfire S?
Toilet Kids?
Detana! Twin Bee?
If we can get a definitive list of 2-player co-op, I'll add that to the table.
I have all ultraboxes :D

It's OK. It took me way too long to actually make it look pretty. :)
Just stumbled onto this list. It's very apparent I need to start collecting all of these and grab one of those Obey PCBs asap!
UPDATE: Last night I fixed a glaring omission—there was no entry for Power Gate (HuCARD).
https://archives.tg-16.com/complete_list_of_tg16_pce_shooters.htm?col=jp&value=power gate is fucking awesome
(https://junk.tg-16.com/images/operation_peacock.png)
OPERATION PEACOCK: Over the past year or two, I would get an occasional email about POWER GATE...
Now, I thought it would be funny to purposefully omit an obvious entry in a list that proclaims to be a "complete" list of shummmpppsters...
...but not even the mediocre Power Gate deserves to be disgraced in such a manner.

I don't understand why video gamers need ridiculous nicknames like schtroumpfs for words that they're actually thinking of. Shooter takes too long to say, but shyewtee or shump is fine?
It's bad enough that so many different games get labeled under broad definitions like "Zelda clone".
