Quote from: WoodyXP on 03/18/2018, 09:31 PMI see Retrogamecave offers PSU for the Supergrafx:

I've never bought anything from these guys, so can't vouch for the quality.
I have a retro trio and an X'eye supply from them. I can say they're high quality supplies but their stock runs out rather frequently.

Yes, VidPro cards and bringing the paper slip to the cashier to get the game from a cage was a large part of many peoples childhoods. And it stuck around for a long time, I remember getting Panzer Dragoon Saga that way in 1998 before they had the R-Zone section specifically for games.

Quote from: bartre on 03/13/2018, 09:02 AMalright guys, I suppose I should have specified.
these are all Japanese controllers, about a 60/40 mix of grey and white.
They're not in perfect shape, but they're in good cosmetic and working order.

for now, I was going to ask $20 a piece, shipped.
as to whether you want grey or white, it's first come first served.

Which model Saturn controllers are these? I'm guessing by whitened Japanese pads?

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 03/08/2018, 03:55 PMThe PACs do effect LD playback, especially the digital aspects of it, so this could be bad RAM or something somewhere, technically. I wouldn't get my hopes up, but it's possible.
Yes, the PACs actually run the video output in 240P through the digital memory on the LA. You get better quality video just removing the Sega or NEC PAC on the A100 if you wanted to use it as a regular LD player.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 03/08/2018, 03:45 PMBut then...something weird has happened in recent years. Localized anime has become "collectable" thanks to mall otaku so now the true value of a translation (it's ability to make the show watchable to non-Japanese) will begin to blur with outsized pricing when OCD and greed has people seeking out hard to find DVDs of shit they don't even want just to complete a run.
It's unfortunate but yes it has.

I'm the weird guy who likes having physical media of what I play, listen to and watch. And I don't mind paying for it if the quality is high (see discotek releases). But when I want say a copy of Neo Tokyo it's out of print and I can't buy it without paying a collector premium even if I'd gladly hand over my cash for a regular retail price release.

Quote from: TaoPaiPai on 03/08/2018, 01:23 PMOn a recent trip back to Japan, I picked up a PAC-N1 for a very reasonable price. I've always wanted to have a full MD/PCE LaserActive set, so I was really excited to find this piece.

I've since been looking for a decent deal on either a bare CLD-A100 or one with a Genesis/MD PAC included. There are a few on the Bay, but a lot of them seem quite overpriced.

There is also one that is on sale locally very close to me, but it seems to have LD playback issues. Has anyone ever seen anything like this and thinks there may be a way to repair it?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-Laser-Active-CLD-A100-Console-LaserDisc-CD-Player-AS-IS/123007058952?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

The problem is shown on the last two images. Apparently this is only happening with LDs and not with PAC games.
LD playback issues can have a lot of causes and they are expensive to ship back and forth if you need to get it repaired. If possible spending the extra money for a working unit would be a much safer bet.

I played a little Conkers bad fur day, I picked up a save a ways into the game and am terrible at it. I am going to try Mario 64 sometime later to see how momentum (running, slowing down) feels, but it's in a box and it requires digging it out. I also played Kirby and the Crystal Shards and can say the d-pad placement is an improvement over the regular N64 pad from a comfort standpoint.
Here are my results of trying Mario 64 with the pad.

Quote from: seieienbu on 03/02/2018, 09:28 PMI'm curious if it will be legal for Smash 64 tournaments.  It looks like it has a much better layout than the original N64 pad.  If I was more of a fan of the system I'd likely pick one up myself.

Does it have a good weight to it/not feel too cheap/light?
It feels pretty sturdy, the analog stick on it is pretty precise which was my biggest worry with it. I am going to try a 3D platformer next.

Quote from: guest on 03/02/2018, 01:01 AMRaphnet has adaptor circuits available to build your own adaptor from TG/PCE controller to USB:
http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/nes2usb/index.php
He also does a circuit for adapting various controllers to the Wiimote accessory connector:
http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/brd_extenmote/index.php
I wonder if he would be willing to include TG/PCE support into the latter one if requested.

On the Wii Virtual Console, I either use a Classic Controller Pro, or the NES Classic controller for TG/PCE games. I also got a Hori Digital controller for GameCube.

The GameCube's stock d-pad beats the Xbox 360's d-pad by a big margin.
The PS2's d-pad is OK. But the original PS1 controller has better feeling buttons (as long as you don't get an ALPS manufactured one, marked with 'A'), since it lacks the pressure sensitive layer of the PS2's Dualshock buttons.
I use the Raphnet adapter for GameCube to play GB/GBC/GBA games, it's great and relatively lag free compared to some cheap ones I got years earlier.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 02/19/2018, 03:32 PMThe entire Streamline catalog, in other words. TBS and SciFi did the same thing.
There was definitely some stuff they weren't airing during that time frame. It was also very amusing to see movies like Golgo 13 on broadcast TV with mere blurring covering up naughty parts to meet FCC regulations, and then other movies like Barefoot Gen running completely unedited.

Quote from: NightWolve on 02/17/2018, 01:32 PMWhen I was kid, Chicago had channel 50, WPWR, which had a program called "Japanimation" that aired every Friday afternoon. You can already figure out what it was, the best animes out of Japan were aired in succession and watching them was how I sometimes spent my Fridays. This is where I saw "Wicked City" and remember being blown away by it. I believe I saw Lupin as well as others that left an impression like "Ghost in the Shell."

Anyway, it's been so many years and I can't even slightly remember the plot of "Wicked City" so it'd be interesting to watch again and see how it holds up for me now as a 42 year-old man, heh.
It was actually WJYS that was running all of those Streamline pictures movies as Japanimation.  And yes, Lupin the Third Castle of Cagliostro aired there, as did Vampire Hunter D, Golgo 13 the Professional, Barefoot Gen, Dirty Pair Affair on Nolandia, Doomed Megapolis, 3x3 eyes and others.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 01/22/2018, 03:49 PMMan, football is the worst. All of it. From concussed 8 year olds to Greek Life, to OJ Simson to fat angry dudes walking around in sweatshop gear with another grown ass man's name on the back. It sucks to high heaven and is a blight on American society. The players, the owners, the stadium owners, NFL management, fuck all of them.

Also, if there is a slower sport I'd like to hear what it is. Your first three guesses are wrong so please try harder. We're looking for a sport where "action" is less than %10 of a TV broadcast to even come close and I'm pretty fucking sure the NFL is alone on this.
Golf.. oh wait you said sport.

Quote from: esteban on 12/19/2017, 07:19 AMYeah, what a shame.

I wonder if tempering my expectations will make me less likely to be annoyed?

That is how I tend to operate...

Also, I find it hilarious that I have loved the recent  Voltron reboot (every season)...yet, Star Wars has struggled to be more than a passing interest to me.
I came in with low expectations and was still disappointed.

It's bad.

It's not prequel bad.

But by the end of the movie I didn't care about any of the  characters

Quote from: guest on 12/15/2017, 03:10 AMHopefully episode 8 is better than force awakens, which was a fun movie but didn't do anything new, with a really boring main character
Better in the sense that it is more original. Yes

Better in a sense that it is less boring? No.

I don't care about the new characters and the charm and magic of Star Wars seems missing from this movie,

I just finished watching the new Star Wars.

In a spoiler free sharing of general thoughts on the movie, it was less of a rehash than the last numbered one. But it was also generally less entertaining.

What are everyone else's thoughts.

Green vs Red is just kind of nonsense.

I actually like Mamo quite a bit, it's weird and very 70s.

Albert Odyssey has a high encounter rate and kind of a boring story. It's very basic, this isn't a bad thing but the game isn't particularly exceptional either. It's not bad, but it plays very much like a mid-tier SNES RPG with a funny localization.

But you have to be a fan of Series 3 to really enjoy it.

Quote from: Gypsy on 12/01/2017, 09:56 PMWatched Lupin the 3rd The Plot Of The Fuma Clan. It was pretty enjoyable. Lots of laughs.
Great animation in it, but the weird voice cast and lack of Yuji Ohno music makes it a little strange.

Quote from: guest on 11/21/2017, 07:04 PMYea, but a full 3D RPG on N64... how much would that have cost, and how would it have compared to a PS1 game that was cheaper, with more features?

A full 2D one would have been doable for sure, but then, how well would that have sold on the "OMFG 3D N64!!11123"?
I recall a few games like Resident Evil 2 (a two disc PSone game) coming out on N64 and it was about 80.00, so it could definitely happen but it would be pricey.
#96
Quote from: guest on 11/21/2017, 06:14 PMRPGs always cost a shitload.   Phantasy Star 2 was like 100$.

Cartridges sucked back then for large things.

Even something as goobered out as Beyond the Beyond is better than any RPG N64 would've ever managed, probably.
Ehh there are lots of nice 16-bit RPGs. It's very conceivable that something lacking cutscenes or voice acting could very easily be done with entirely 3D environments on the N64. Or simply a 2D RPG like many others that were still coming out on the Saturn and Playstation.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/19/2017, 03:07 PMIt really is. The only downside is that they only offered terrible case colors after so many cool ones for the earlier systems.
Yeah, I wasn't too picky. The bundle that I got from another forum member here got me the original monochrome unit. A boxed but pink SwanColor and 10 games for 50.00. I spent about the same amount on the SwanCrystal itself, but it's well worth it if you actually want to be able to see games that are in color.

The Summon Night 6 Wonderful Edtion for the Playstation Vita is here!

Released by Gaijinworks this LE is pretty amazing, and they definitely set the bar high with this one when it comes to production values.

Besides the game itself there is a double-sided poster, character plush, full CD soundtrack, coaster set with headshots, and a 200 page hardbound artbook! To keep it all together it comes in a heavy chipboard box with full color printing all over and magnets to keep it closed and with a helpful pull ribbon for opening.

It was a long time coming, but man was it worth it.
I got a gray plushie with my PS4 one.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/08/2017, 10:55 PMYeah, aside from a few standout examples I think SMS boxes look great. I've never understood why people complain about them.
The grid pattern on those box designs is incredibly nostalgic to me, and I didn't even grow up owning a master system (and barely played one until I got my own in the late 90s). But just seeing those boxes conjures up images of visits to toy stores, seeing SMS games for sale and wondering if they were any good. While not all of the art around it is great.
The consistent design element of the checkerboard patterns is at the very least a warmer and friendlier aesthetic choice than the template of art used by Turbografx games.
