Quote from: ccovell on 04/19/2017, 08:14 PMYou will have to mod the console, by lifting pin 29 of the 6280 CPU, as shown here: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/multi-region-pc-engine-turbo-grafx-16/
... in addition to using a converter.
I would like to mention, under no circumstance should anyone be lifting leg 29. This is dangerous and you can break off the leg.
The whole point is to connect leg 29 to ground. All you need to do to ground leg 29 is to put a little solder blob to pin 30 and just bridge the two legs together. Simple, easy and no risk to the system.

All other discs work just fine?  Original and burned discs?  It's only Pceworks pressed discs that have the issue?
#103
Both are great games.

The second one is bigger and has more to explore. Also, more hidden characters than the first game and even better colors.

Experiment with the different characters and see what one or ones you like the best. Then upgrade them to your play style.

Make sure to test the black and white potions on each character as they do different things.
#104
The ground and 5v you only need to use one side or the other, not both.

As for resistance I don't have a machine open at the moment to test.  If your meter has a continuity test option on it you can see if you bridged anything that way.

Just so everyone is aware the US TurboDuo adapter outputs exactly the same as the PC Engine Duo adapter.

So when they released the US TurboDuo they made absolutely no changes to the adapter internally for the differences in voltages.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 02/28/2017, 12:27 PMWhy are you telling people to buy a 12V power supply for a 9V device and then saying it will run "cooler"? Is this thing selectable or did you post the wrong link or something?

A better supply than the original is not hard to find because everything is IC based now instead of transformer based.  9V 1000mA. If it's not a complete POS then this is all you'll need.
Even when using the original power supplies as mickcris stated will show a lower voltage when under load. So I went through the 4 PAD-129's and one PAD-130 I have sitting here and tested each one under load using a HuCard and then reading a game disc.

The lowest voltage I saw out of the 5 original supplies while reading a cd-rom game disc was 11.75v. The lowest voltage I saw with the 5 original power supplies while having a HuCard in the system was 12.25v

This tells me the 12v regulated supply will be about the same as an original supply rated at 9v.
So yes, I was wrong to say it would run cooler, but I was right to recommend a quality regulated 12v supply.

The 9v supplies I have and tested work in these systems just fine with original cd-rom game discs. As soon as I try a burned game these 9v supplies no longer allow the system to read discs. Simply swapping the 9v supply out for an original or one of these 12v supplies allows the burned discs to be read. I have not found any exceptions to my testing.

The 9v supplies are good as long as you don't want to use burned discs.

I typically use one of those lint free clothes that comes with LCD computer monitors and a credit card to clean HuCard slots.

Take the lint free cloth and roll it up a bit and then dunk it in a rubbing alcohol bottle. Fold it over a credit card and start pushing and pulling it in and out of the slot. This cleans the slot pins just fine. If there is crap stuck down in there use a small tool and clean out any fuzz or other material that is stuck down in it.

I usually use a little dental pick type tool to scrape out any hard dried on gunk. Just be carefull not to bend or do anything to the pins down in there.
#108
One thing I have noticed with the original power adapters is none of the ones I have ever seen run at their rated voltages. Even with a new cap put in them.

TurboDuo / PC Engine Duo always put out almost exactly 16v
PC Engine Duo-R almost always put out 14.5v

I have found using CCTV power supplies are the best and usually much cheaper solution than using an original power supply. Going to cheap on the supply can cause cd-rom reading issues I have also found. The cd-rom issues usually arise with the cheap 9v 1500ma ones.

Remember the 7805's take any voltage and reduce the voltage to 5v. So the higher the volts the more heat is output into the system. So I have been sticking to 12v cctv ones if I get a system that does not have a power supply.

For a Duo-R
power supply = http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Supply-DC-12V-5000mA-REGULATED-UL-2-1mm-5-5mm-DC12V5000mA-/231423906054?hash=item35e1f09106

adapter =  http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-DC-Power-3-5mm-x-1-35mm-Male-Plug-To-5-5x2-1mm-Female-Jack-Adapter-Connector-/252439063719?hash=item3ac68a6ca7:g:~NgAAOSwNuxXb7Xw

Less voltage then the original power supply so it will run cooler and plenty of current so there are no cd-rom issues. You can get cheaper ones, 3000ma etc I just make sure to get regulated supplies or ones marked as such for my own personal preference.

I make A/V cables
http://www.ebay.com/itm/162365179524?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1561.l2649

At that point it's just a matter of finding a proper controller that fits your needs the best.

Kieth Courage, Neutopia and Dungeon Explorer

Kieth Courage is there cause it came with the system.

First three cd games after getting a TurboDuo are.....

Y's 1&2, Dungeon Explorer 2, Exile 2

I skipped the 4n1 disc for a bit but once I tried that, Gate of thunder blew me away at the time.

SGFX + ACD + SCD2 allows all games available to be played. However....

SGFX = 5 games
ACD = (not sure how many but another small hand full but more then the SGFX has)

Finding ones in good shape along with a Super CD-Rom 2 that is also in good shape is usually the hardest part. Don't mod the SGFX, mod the Super CD-Rom 2 if that is the route you go. Modding a SGFX imo is a bit of a waste of money unless you plan on only playing carts.

I needed several doors a month or two back. When I contacted him he said he needed to or was making more, making a new batch.

But I havn't heard anything since. Might be because of the holidays. Not sure. But I assume Jelloslug is the goto guy for doors, Black Duo and manilla/white Duo-R.

My personal favorite backup item for the PCE/TG16 stuff is the MB128.
https://pce.cabbage.cx/mb128.html

I personally think this is the best solution for long term storage without any modifications to hardware. As the batteries get low make sure to replace them and your set.

This requires a game to manage the backup memory though. I use Emerald Dragon just like what is used on that page. It really does work well. And it has a ton of space.

I'll get flagged for this on some government Rolodex or the server hard drives will start spinning.

I would say this exact same thing about any president.

But I tell this to everyone. Ever get a flat tire?  Gotta take care of it before you drive your car, right?
Well,  don't like your president?  Well then take care of it. It's why we carry guns. If someone else takes office you don't like. Well take care of it again. I mean roll with what we got or man the fuck up. Fix the flat tire and keep on driving.
Jesus fucking Christ....

:)
#114
Don't emulate.  That still sucks.  But you don't need to buy games either.

Buy a real console and set it up the way you want. Then get an everdrive and burn the games. Far cheaper and you still get to play on the real thing.

Unless your rich and have cash to blow TG16 collecting isnt for anyone except people with cash burning a hole in there pocket.

Quote from: Keith Courage on 12/19/2016, 10:38 PMBe careful with generic made AV cables for DUOs. Some people don't make them correctly by not tapping ground. This produces a poor quality/slightly blurry video signal.
That was always my problem trying to find a good cheap alternative. Got tired of searching for good 3rd party cables so I decided to just start putting them together myself.

A lot of the other ones I have tried I would have to open up and either re-solder or do exactly what Keith described but running a wire between pin 3 and the shield because they were not grounded properly.

TurboDuo has a 3.0 system software built into it.
Replacement 3rd party AV cable, little self promotion. :)

My honest opinion....

If you don't know what your looking for get a turbo everdrive.  I assume they should still fit in the laseractive port if they don't have the shell or USB port.

Then you can try all the games you want and see what ones you like.
Cd-rom games just find ones that look interesting,  burn some discs to play them,  try them out.
#119
Thanks you for the answer.

After reading some stuff on this I was coming to the same conclusion. But thought it still might be worthwhile to ask just in case.

I was really hoping though cause this could open RGB possibilities for the portable, lol.

Oh well. I can dream right?
#120
So I just had a bit of a special request from someone. There TV has a VGA input 15pin d-sub port.

I believe this connection does RGB looking at the pinout diagrams I find online about it.

Anyone that has a bit more knowledge then I....
Would I just be able to RGB mod a console and put the connections to the R+ G+ and B+ on the pins and then use Pin 44 or composite video for sync and actually have it work?

I see there is a VS and a HS for vertical and horizontal sync. Do I need to use a specific one of these or do I need to use both somehow?
#121
I am pretty sure TheSteve said it's ok to wash with the caps as they are sealed.

However remove everything you want to remove as the less stuff that is there the less material will be left on the board hidden under the edge of caps etc.

I don't wash them as I don't have a dishwasher. I just soak my boards in rubbing alcohol and use a toothbrush and q-tips.
#122
Here is Vasteel.
I apparently stopped the video early as there was a short blooper about 30 seconds after I shut off the camera and then it said The End.

There are two endings. One for each brother. I played as the first one,  oldest brother. I think Falial. Stefan I think is the younger brother. Leader of the rebel forces.

It's weird, I cannot hear that cd-rom tapping chatter sound when playing the console but it is annoying in the video. My camera must pick it up for some reason.
#123
I enjoyed Cannon Fodder on the Jaguar.

Don't enter me in the raffle. But I thought it was a good game.
#124
I use a SGX + TED v2.4

Same boat as Bonknuts though. I use a regulated power supply 12v that powers both parts of the system. SGX + SCD2.

Never had a problem yet.
#125
I dont get why Nintendo only put 30 games. Why would we limit a console to 30 games?

Make it mini with a SD card or some memory you can't erase and slap all the games on it. Heck,  make a version available that can play all the cd-rom games from the SD card as well.

I don't see the appeal in a console with a limited number of games like that when you can get the original console. MOD it fix it whatever then grab an everdrive and have every single game in the first place.

But thats me......

As for Konami I really can't remember any of their games I have played recently besides Rondo of Blood.
#126
I don't think it is the chip.

If you soldered the pins together a lot of times the solder joints crack when inserting hucards.

It's best to use small wires to reconnect the pins again as the shock of inserting a hucard want break any solder joints.
#127
Quote from: leonk on 11/29/2016, 07:34 PMwhy would you replace the op-amp?
There is usually a lot of leakage around three of the op-amps. When I take them off to clean under them I usually just replace them. 4558 op-amps are rather cheap so to me it's usually a negligible cost.
#128
Maybe the pins are dirty in the hucard slot. Take an old credit card or one you don't like to use.

Then grab a lint free cloth like the ones that you get or use with your computer monitors. Soak the cloth in rubbing alcohol then fold it over the credit card. Push it into the slot back and forth a bit.

I have had systems that worked fine with the cd-rom but always showed a white screen with a hucard. Sometimes cleaning the slot was all it took.

Maybe this issues is similar?
#129
I have never cleaned a board with caps on it. So I can't say if or what are any bad effects of doing this.

I don't have a dishwasher so I literally give my boards a rubbing alcohol bath. I then go over the entire surface top and bottom with q-tips and an old toothbrush.

Once that is done and the board is clean any thru hole location that had corrosion around it or is black I then make sure to pay attention and clean them all put and sometimes even put cap legs thru them and solder them in place.

Then I put the new op-amps,  7805's and caps back on the board. Then any mods people want.  :)
#130
The electrolytic fluid from the caps is conductive.

If you done get it all gone from the boars,  traces and thru-hole locations that go from the top and bottom of the board it can create shorts.

Very hard to troubleshoot until a good wash has been done. Usually after removing everything from the motherboard is when to give the entire board a bath. But washing with new caps should be fine as well as the caps are sealed. The old ones most likely not anymore from the leaking etc.
#131
Aww dang... Got my hopes up there. I wold love some Blaster Master on the TG16.
#132
lol

Well, I started with the 6502 mostly because I do have a hard time sticking with a language. My spare time right now is filled with repairing these consoles and learning Russian.

I learn the programming in my free time at work. So it is fairly sporadic when I can sit down and concentrate on it but I really wanted to get into something with programming even if it is not extremely useful today.

These systems hold my interest far more than Java does so learning 6502 seemed logical.
#133
Mostly what I have done is a little experimenting with some of the branches. I wrote a little endless loop that would cycle through the colors on the 4 or 5 memory areas the little windows provided me.

It would just increment the color by one, compare that color value and once it reached a certain value it would then cycle to the next part of the loop. Once it got to the end it would JMP back to the top and start all over again.

So I havn't done much but I can see how some of the stuff was and some of the confusing stuff of why certain things either worked or didn't.

This is this first programming language I have messed with for this long. I have been poking around at it for about the past month.

I have messed with ruby, perl, python and such but never got past hello world. The only thing I can do any scripting with right now is BASH on Linux.
#134
So I have been starting to teach myself the 6502 assembly language from http://6502.org/tutorials/

I have went through most of the easy6502 and read a lot of the rest of the stuff there.

I can do basic little dot movements and color changes and seem to know how to use JMP, JSR and RTS. INC, IN.... etc.

So beyond these instructions and manuals where would be the next logical step to progress my learning of how to program for this console?

Edit: Wooops, thought I put this under the  PCE  Tool Game development. If a mod could move it, that would be great.
#135
I'll second Mickcris's Duo's.

Hard to find them at the price, fixed and modded anywhere else.

Also, I have been on a repairing spree lately fixing doujindance machines. There not worth it once you need to sink another $50 - $200 to repair what he put in the machine.
#136
I always wipe off the old stuff and apply new thermal paste to the machines I work on.

You should put some on there when putting it back together as it allows the heat to transfer more efficiently to the heat sink.
#137
If your multimeter can do continuity tests. You can test the fuse with that. Just put the probes on either end of the fuse. If you hear the beep it's not blown. If no sound, it's blown.

But yeah, usually when they are not clear and see through they are popped.

But that also means something caused it. So buy two new fuses. That way if it happens right away to the new fuse you can start tracking down any shorts causing the issue.

Once you take that fuse out you should be able to see the writing on it and determine the amp size of the fuse and buy appropriately.
#138
I am at work at the moment so I cannot look up the value of the fuse.

But console5 has some for the Duo's.

https://console5.com/store/components/fuses.html

Not sure if they have the same ratings or not as the one in the PC Engine.
#139
Under the metal heatsink I think.

If that is blown then replace it. If it is not blown, replace the 7805 with a new one.

You can see it in this image behind the two caps to the right side of the 7805.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/u80Ed-_XAfg/maxresdefault.jpg
#140
First thing is find out if it is actually turning on or not.

Open it up and check the fuse. Make sure it's not popped.

Get out your voltage meter and test the legs on the 7805 to see if the proper voltage is going into it and coming out of it.

Left leg = 12v
Center leg = ground
Right leg = 5v

If that looks good I would start looking for other issues, bubbly caps, corrosion around any of the chips. Bad wiring from the mods and then make sure the ribbon cable is still solidly into the mainboard of the unit.

If all that looks good, replace caps and pray. :)

PS. I should clarify, the Left leg I said 12v in reality it could be between 9v - 16v from the typical power supply used. 7805's I think are rated up to 35v and they still only put out 5v so no matter what the Right side should be 5v or very close. All of the extra energy no matter how much the 7805 is fed it will dissipate it into the machine as heat.
#141
If there is one thing I have learned on these consoles.

They are all salvageable unless the HuC chips are bad.
Well, unless the lens goes bad in an IFU.... I havn't figured out where to find new lenses for those yet.
#142
There is this site that has a couple games as well.

https://pce.cabbage.cx/
#143
I think I am on the 4th map maybe 5th map on Vasteel. Trying to play in my spare time. Knock it out for can pcefx beat the games thread.
#144
Yes

You do not need any sort of region mod when using an Ever drive.
#145
There was a thread on the boards here someplace where thesteve explained that they are not needed.

They ground the two audio and video signals to ground and introduce noise to the audio and video because the signals are getting mixed to ground.

They were removed in the pce duo-r and rx. He pointed out.

mickcris have you noticed any issues with this mod chip with the Ted at all?
#146
Yes, retro_tduo is me.

That RGB amp is the last one I have with the tall smd caps. Rest of my systems will have the tantalum lower profile. Cheap region mods that work with TED's is all I really care about. I think I have tested most of the designs out there except  this one from Game-Tech.

Wanna know what would have saved the TG16?

Street Fighter 2 on it's own bitches!!! Should have been a pack in and then the Arcade card should have been built into another console because because yeah...Whatever......

Seriously, box art aside.... It needed more games period. You walked into a store and you looked at how many games were on the shelf for the consoles and the TG16 was lacking. They always had a little tiny spot in the games case compared to the Genesis. And what game was always on Demo? Kieth Courage.... I mean wtf. Sure the colors were nice but the gameplay compared to most platformers it felt very stiff and unresponsive.

Imo they needed a slightly better selection of games. More rpgs, more 3d maze crawling style,... I mean, they had them in Japan and the system did great. In the US all we had was a little splattering of mediocre titles mostly, with a few standouts. They had all kinds of games to choose from in Japan but the few we had it was already a niche market when the system was released as the Genesis library of games quickly outgrew what the TG16 had to offer.

But hey.... There might be other factors I have no idea about. F the planet and play yer damned games. :)
