10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: Official Ninja on 02/08/2011, 06:13 PMHere is more information to consider.

My tg-cd had the warm up issue, gear was "stretched" looking and fell apart when i touched it. I replaced the gear with one sent to me from these forums. Still had a warm up issue.

Today I stopped by the electronics store to get a 5v fan for my trs-80 disk drive case. I look on the junk table and I see a NEC CDR-35D-01.
Its marked $5.00 so I grab it up and purchase it with my fan.

When i got home I plugged the tg-16 power adaper up to it and BINGO it starts playing my Ozzy Diary of a Madman disc. SCORE.

I hook the drive up to the tg-16 cd base unit and it doesnt work when i press run. BUT, if i press play music plays through the TV.

So, I get my broken drive, gut out the whole laser assembly. It was a 166(?) I then gutted the whole laser assembly from the 35D to the tg-cd drive.
Had to solder 4 wires is all.

Plug the TG-CD drive with 35D laser unit (220 type) in to my CD base unit and BAM! Perfect working tg-CD. Works perfect even reads CD-R like a dream.

For $5.00 !!!!
The 35D PCB is different then the 30A. But yea, if you put a 30A's PCB in the 35D it wil work with the TG16/PCE. It's what mine is. The middle is from a 35D, the lid, the PCB and the bottom are from my broken 30A.

Quote from: nat on 01/28/2011, 07:57 PMNEC Interchannel is NEC Avenue. Avenue simply underwent a name change sometime after the release of the FX. The wiki page for Interchannel seems to indicated it was founded in 1987 under the name "NEC Interchannel," which is incorrect. It was founded in 1987 as "NEC Avenue." I think the name change occurred in 1995 based on game copyrights; there are no pre-1995 games credited to NEC Interchannel to my knowledge, as there are no post-1995 games credited to NEC Avenue as far as I know.
Fixed, but for how long is not known. Wiki is big on not believing in things.

Like I said on youtube, I'm gonna suck at this game.

KSS-160 is the proper laser assembly for the TurboCD/CDROM2. KSS-210 or 220 is the same laser but different assembly.

Quote from: guest on 01/26/2011, 05:20 PMMeet the perpetual black Bomberman hat's new 'rare' white friend.  Since the former has been up forever and failed to sell at $200, I bet the latter will sell like a hotcake at $300.
Wow. And the first one looks of higher quality.

The Pyle SCART to HDMI convertor works great for LCDs aswell.
#10
That doesn't follow Neo-Geo, or MSX2 Scart. Can't think of anything else that uses Din8.

Quote from: OldRover on 01/24/2011, 11:08 AMBasically, my aim is to write a microdriver capable of initializing the CDROM system enough to enable redbook playback and access to the ADPCM circuit from a regular hucard. I don't know if any emulators would support this though... YAME probably will because of how it's set up, and a recent build of mednafen might as well... but I doubt Hu-Go! will, and Ootake is only a maybe.
Mednafen should do it, even 8.0. Just have to tell it that your HuCard is your cd system card and load the cd you want to use.

What kind of connector is the other end?

Quote from: Duo_R on 01/22/2011, 04:45 PMI wish there was an arcade card bootup screen.
That would have been a nice touch. I'm not really sure why NEC didn't take the relatively small effort in making the change. Even just a simple textual change would have been nice - just something to distinguish it from the 3.0.
When I first got my arcade card I thought there was something wrong with it because it didn't say arcade anywhere.

Well you have both. Photos!

Quote from: BlueBMW on 01/23/2011, 02:30 PMIf the RX pad is like the FX pad.. then I agree... sucks ballz
It's not just like it, it's the exact same pad. Only the connector on the end of the cable is different.
So I could made a PCE pad to PCFX pad cablé?

Quote from: Keranu on 01/23/2011, 12:50 AMthe grid lines over them, similar to Master System's!
I look forward to that the lest with the 2nd print. I could care less about the lack of CD. I wanted the Damn JPN artwork, not this "ugly" multi region art crap.

QuoteIt will be simpler, with no need to edit your recordings.
Actually you will need to edit them more because they end abruptly since they are made to loop.  You'll have to loop them yourself as well as add a fade at the end.
Good point.

Quote from: TheClash603 on 01/22/2011, 03:22 PMI have a Twin Famicom that will power up and it works perfectly, but once you turn it off, you have to wait several hours before it will turn on again.  This is fine for playing the occasional disk game, but you better hope those carts read correctly the first time you try them, because you only get one shot.

It all happened when I accidentally plugged the thing into the step-up side of my converter.
The twin uses a power adapter right? (It's been 3 years since I demo'd a twin for Rising Stuff.) You might just need a new adaptor. You may also need a new voltage regulator in the twin.

The rom of an Arcade Card and the Super CDRom cards are the same. Arcade card just has additional vram. It is an on/off option in mednefan. In fact if you load the ver. 3 rom in mednafen it only loads the rom and thus you get a regular CDROM2 splash screen that is ver. 3.

Quote from: ccovell on 01/20/2011, 08:40 PMHonestly, replacing the spring is a bit of a big deal, as it can't have too much tension (or too little), or else the head will spring back too quickly or too slowly, messing up the timing.  The belt & gear positions inside also screw up the timing if you disassemble the whole thing.  I hate the FDS.

Anyway, if you have a working FDS drive, yes, you can just replace the whole drive in the Twin Fami.
That honestly never occurred to me to actually take the old drive out and swap it in with an original model's guts. I'd probably be too afraid to do something like that, so I might just stick with the original plan.
You could also swap the springs :P

But IMO it probably would be easier to swap drives.

Quote from: OldRover on 01/18/2011, 07:54 PMit uses negative dB sample inversion and possibly sample dropping
That is awesome.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 01/20/2011, 03:35 PMThanks for the link, but I'm wondering how this is much different than just recording from the audio outputs.
It will be simpler, with no need to edit your recordings. That and if you have a crapy recorder, you're bypassing it.

Did he have to watermark every damn page? :/

I offered $5 to both. If for some odd reason they accept, someone is welcome to take it, I don't actually have the $5.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 01/12/2011, 07:40 PMlets you play back a few of the PCM songs (probably re-encoded to play in Flash)
They are actually MP3s on the CD in one of the folder, it's just a flash-based mp3 player. (It might actually be Java)

Action Strategy- Vasteel
Platformer- Legendary Axe
Puzzle- Boxy Boy
Action RPG- Neutopia

Does it need to be TG16 or are PCE games fine too?
And what games do you already have?

Not to say that the PC-Engine wasn't the right choice, but Zelda on the FDS sounds wayyyyyy better then the cart version. FM Synth Zelda > regular Zelda, even with the loading for dungeons.

Quote from: Duo_R on 01/07/2011, 12:25 PMSo how else am I supposed to get the CD for the game I pre-ordered? lololol
Interesting question.  They were saying all this time on the forums that the CD-R/iso burned copies were working fine, so just use those......

but now, it seems like they've made a new loop hole to not look like they fucked up.... and that is making a NEW CD (that probably wont work either if the use Chang's Speedy Fast Pressing services in good ol China)..

this CD, since it is for Run #2, will omit the extras, thus making the original 2400 preorders happy in the pants once again.  Now they can go YOU GOT YOUR DAMN CD TOO, BUT YOU DONT GET ANY OF THE EXTRAS THAT ONLY PREORDERERS WERE ENTITLED TO.

BTW, DONT COPY THE ORIGINAL CD ANYMORE, ITS ILLEGAL.  IT WAS COOL FOR THE PAST WEEK, BUT DONT DO IT NOW.

Classic really, as that will cost more to press.   If they hadn't changed the disc contents they could just contact the presser and have them reuse the master that was made for batch #1.  This usually involves a lesser pressing price as they aren't having to make a nice fancy master disc, and all of that.

Though maybe that doesn't matter since disc #1 didn't work.   The pressing house still owes them a functional batch, or a refund probably.  Good luck getting that from a place in China.
The new CD is just a Bin/Cue for download on their site. They aren't pressing.
