10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: turboswimbz on 12/30/2017, 09:46 AMI really don't enjoy Gate of Thunder...

I don't know why, I love other shooters like it, but after I die once or twice, I just move on, it never holds me.

I mean it's got great music, graphics and I know many people love it, I just can't get into it.
Dis you try hard or devil modes?

QuoteIt was presumably originally sold in France (with French paperwork), not bought from someone in Japan and mailed directly to the end user.  Maybe through Sodipeng?
Yep. Sodipeng GT. I remember the day I bought it in  93, and throwing away the box and manuals in a street bin on my way home, because I had to hide it from my parents.
So I don't remember the exact packaging, but I'm not sure the japanese reg card was part of it.

Thanks for the feedback, greetly appreciated! :D

One project I really hope will be enventually finished is the Team Innocent translation. I had actually started to play TI when I read about the translation project, then stopped playing to wait for the translation.

Others projects I hope will come to a good end are ManjiMaru, Kabuki Den and Gulliver Boy. Wait... taht was a dream   :D

I'm very interested! In both 3.5 and regular screen covers!

Growing up in PAL land was hell. That's surely one of the many reasons I so much loved the PC Engine, the semi-official french distribution being Japanese RGB modded consoles. It was unbearable for me to play PAL MD and Super Nintendo, and imported systems were really expensive.

Sealed games. And keeping them sealed.

Thanks,  I knew it was obvious, but i needed to be sure

Thanks for the reply schweaty, it could indeed be a bios issue, but I have no clue how to test it.
I tried to launch the laseractive with the bios removed, only a black screen shows, with no possibility to read any type of discs, even music ones.

Choijimmy, thanks to share your experience :)

I'll have a look at the transistors on the FSTB board, but I'll wait to have another Pac to test before touching the INTF board, this one is a real PITA to extract!

One more (dumb) question: The Pac can launch CD/LD games even without an ML2016/32 battery inside, right?

Sorry for the double post, but I was afraid my edit wouldn't be seen

A "laseractive" search on the forum led me to the "REPAIR GUIDE - Laseractive NEC PAC-N1 / N10: Total capacitor replacement chart" .  How did I miss that

Choijimmy provides some really usefull informations in that thread!

So I started by the laser lens pot: no luck.

To resume, so far:

- I have 2 working lens, one from a CLD-900 and one from another non working at all laseractive. Turning the pot didn't help with the two lenses. If I turn the pot clockwise too far (180° for a lens, 90° for the other one), discs wouldn't be recognized anymore.

- With their pot at its original spot the 2 lenses behave exactly the same.

- With or without the Sega PAC, Music CDs and Movie LDs play fine and launch really fast, even with a badly scratched LD.

- Without the PAC, it can read music tracks of a burned MegaCD disc.

- Without the PAC, my MegaLD disc is recognized: A message says that a Sega PAC is needed to read the disc.

- With the PAC, once a disc is inserted, the cursor moves on the screen's "play" button. I press the A button of the controller, the disc starts to spin, but nothing launch. The disc keeps spinning , I can move the cursor left to right, but the onscreen or physical eject buttons don't respond, the disc keeps on spinning with seeking noise from the lens every ~20 seconds.

All this makes me think that the problem does not come from the lenses, but from the PAC or from the INTF assy, but I'd like to hear opinions of members who have the knowledge and some experience on these units.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! [-o<

Another Laseractive thread  :-"

I received a junk laseractive last week. The tray opens (with a little help), but it would'nt read anything: any type of discs wasn't spinning.

I swapped the lens with another one (BlueBMW, if you read this, you can add the CLD-900 to the compatible units list) and now regular CDs and LDs play fine.

BUT Mega LDs and MegaCDs don't work. The discs spin, but don't launch. Cartridges work.

So I need help from the tech gurus to narrow down the source of the issue

- If regular CDs and LDs play fine, should Mega CDs and Mega LDs also work, or could the lens be strong enough to read regulars discs but too weak to read games?

- Or could the Sega pac be faulty? I recapped it a while ago, so I quickly checked my old soldering job and it seems fine at first view, except 2 NP caps that don't look genuine  and that I'm sure weren't soldered by me.

- I read in some thread that it's possible to adjust the lens power, but I wasn't able to find info  in the service manual or in forums. Does anybody know wich pot(s) is concerned?

Thanks in advance  for your help  :)

My ringtone is the title screen music of WOT.

An other PCE CD track I once used as ringtone is the first track of Ranma III, the CDrom warning message. On this game it's not the usal one, I suggest to anybody who has the game to listen to it, it's pretty hilarious.

I would have killed for a Arcade Card KOF back in the days.

Yes, Override is Awesome, one of my first game in 92, cleared it on GT :)

Once mastered, the yellow option makes the game even more fun.

Quote from: esteban on 07/22/2017, 08:32 AM• DEKOBOKO DENSETSU (this song is annoying and corny, but I have always wondered if the lyrics were interesting or just STOOPID. This is another game I have dismissed, but, who knows? I should see if it is more fun now that my three kids and I can play it together).
Dekoboko's song is AWESOME. I used to air it in my car for the lulz.

I'd love to have it translated.

Please please please  [-o<

Hey !  That tennokoe looks exactly like one I made and sold !

Did someone mention Strider?

If you like shooters, and have an everdrive, try Eliminate Down.

And that shitbag set a reserve price.

And those idiots bidding like crazy.

And Fudoh being venerated on the shmups forums.

That shit starts to really get on my nerves.

I bought Aldynes with the cardboard less than 60€ 3 years ago, it was the usual asked price then.

Despite the lack of parallax, I always found the game great to watch. Robots are big and well animated.

According to pcedaisakusen, japanese retail titles:

Hello, Welcome aboard!

The broken PCB thing is very common on SGX, because of the mount posts that make the PCB cracking from a minor bump.

I had the same problem, solved in this thread:

https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=20187.0

There are other threads that talk about the posts problem, the advice is generally to simply cut them.
You can try to do it, so there won't be any pressure point on the PCB anymore, but if it doesn't work, you'll have some solder work to do.
#31
Yeah, I'm very happy with mine. Marqs keeps implementing new features, even though things should slow down a bit since the profiles feature and x4 / x5 modes have been added.
#32
That was awesome, really interesting.

BITD I thought the games I loved were made by large teams of serious grown-ups.
It's funny to realize that most the time it was 2-3 guys barely older than I was.
#33
So far, among several non working Hucards, I had 3 that I'm sure are not working, as I really tried everything I could:

- a Parasol Star that don't even start.
- a tennokoe that don't even start.
- a Jacky Chan (japanese) with corrupted graphics.
#34
IMO the voice is the only good thing in this game  :D
#35
Yeah,  Sol Moonarge is awesome. But hard, couldn't get very far when I played it. At least I saw the girl in her bath

Tarantino's Death Proof. My worst experience of a movie saw in a theater. All that blah, blah, blah was unbearable. During the whole movie I wanted to burst my ears and eyes.

Quote from: cabbage on 12/25/2016, 05:59 PMI wanted to get a scan of the manual and maybe translate some parts of it (if there are any helpful), but I don't have a copy of Energy  and neither did anyone I asked, hehe.
Cabbage, I have a second copy of Energy I got in a lot after winning the other one in Sarumaru's raffle (thanks again  :D ).

I can send it to you if you want, just PM me.

Had to google Shadowland to figure out what the hell he was talking about.

Quote from: csgx1 on 12/15/2016, 01:21 PMI'm also interested in hearing more about swapping the original GBA with replacement backlit screens if anyone has any experience with them. Is it as simple as unplugging the old screen and plugging in a new one?   I still have the old Afterburner front light kit installed in my original GBA.  Not great at all by today's standards but it was impressive 15 years ago.
I recently did that mod, it's not as simple as just plugging the new screen but it's not a hard mod.
You need to remove a bit of plastic to fit in the thicker screen and solder a wire to a ribbon adapter.

you can find guides on the internet, these are pretty clear and simple:

Screen/GBA models compatibilities:

There's also a big thread here, usefull for subtilities and troubleshooting:

Amazing mod, can't get enough of my GBA since I did it.

I think I clearly misremembered, It was the AFC setting .

Second time in one week I say bullshit while trying to help people  ](*,)

I really hope you'll find a solution.
#42
Not sure if it will help, but it reminds me of what does a PcE on a XRGB3. Setting UP the value of the Low Pass Filter was the solution.

Maybe you could post your issue on the http://shmups.system11.org/ forums, it's full of helpfull tech guys.
#43
My bad, read too fast
#44
What you want is syscard3.pce .
Just launch it like a normal .pce rom.

Quote from: cccmar on 12/09/2016, 09:40 AMThe majority of good HuCard games are already translated I think, so we won't be working on many of those in the future (although there are 2-3 more we may decide to tackle later on).
There are a few CD games we'd like to work on, but definitely not anytime soon. I personally really enjoyed some Japan exclusives (especially Blood Gear and Macross), but they will probably have to wait.  :-#
Thanks for your answer that augurs some awesome and exiting things to come in the future!
And thanks for what you already delivered!

One more question if you don't mind:  will you focus on SciFi / Mechs games?
#46
Will you keep concentrate on HuCards or is a CDrom translation imaginable?
#47
Raiden, Kyukyoku Tiger.
Override and Cyber Core too, they're underestimated IMO.
