10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I've tried RGB modding several IFUs over the years, but have never been able to produce what I consider acceptable video output. There are 2 issues I can't seem to eliminate, and I'm hoping someone will be able to provide some guidance. I've seen past posts about this, but never any solutions.

1) When I do VileTim's jailbar fix to the PC Engine, it looks great on its own, but when i put it into the IFU and use the IFU output, the jailbars return. This has been a consistent problem on all the PC Engines and IFUs on which I have attempted the mods.

2) There is always very noticeable image noise, usually diagonal lines moving across the screen. It can also look like swirling noise on solid colors. I have tried pulling ground and/or +5v from several places on the IFU board, and tried using a larger gauge of wire for power and RGB lines, but nothing seems to improve it even a little bit.

Thanks for any help you can all offer. Hopefully someone has success stories to share, I'd love to figure this out :)

I mod and repair lots of Duo consoles, but I've never run into this. The CD part functions perfectly - SuperCD games play fine with no skipping or any graphical problems. The games actually run, I can control the character on screen and such. But no Hucard games will run, it's just a yellow screen. The slot is very well cleaned at this point, and the Hucards I'm testing with work on other systems.

I've tested continuity between the slot and huc6280, huc6270, and several chips on the bottom of the board (IC518,517,520,516, AND IC906). Based on simply visually following the traces, continuity seems good.

Is there a ram or other chip that is only used on the Hucard side that may have failed? It seems totally bizarre that the game part of the CD actually is playable if there's something wrong with a main chip.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi all,

Longtime modder/repairist working on my first couple of DUOs.

I recently bought 2 non-working DUOs from a seller on ebay.  Apparently, they were someone else's mistakes, because they had both been recapped with very sloppy soldering, some pads missing, wires disconnected, etc.

Anyway, one was purchased as "no video out to tv," which i thought might be a fuse or something else easy.  Unfortunately, it must have been relegated to a parts machine, because the 3 coils near the AV Port were removed!  I swapped in the 3 from the other unit, and everything works great after the re-recap.

So now the other unit has none, and I need to find some.  I'm really not familiar with this part, which I assume is a filter for video and audio.  The only thing written on it is "TOKIN 10."  I found something on Mouser, but the physical sizes on the datasheet are about 3 times the size of what I need.

Anyone able to help me source them?  Thanks in advance!
