Off-Topic / Hudson fans might want this
11/21/2018, 11:14 AM
I saw this for sale and thought Hudson fans might want this as I don't see plushies of him as often as other famous video game characters.

I just finished watching the new Star Wars.

In a spoiler free sharing of general thoughts on the movie, it was less of a rehash than the last numbered one. But it was also generally less entertaining.

What are everyone else's thoughts.

Sad news here.

I was a fan of his, I got the chance to see him live on the Wildflowers tour in 94. It's a sad day

I just picked up Tengai Makyou Dennou Karakuri Kakutouden which has fantastic animation and is based on the awesome Tengai Makyo series, and I've tried it out. The problem is, I have no idea how it's actually supposed to be played. In thumbing through the manual I see that there are special movies but I'm unsure exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. Does anyone know how this is intended to be played?

Off-Topic / Arrested Development Season 5

It's finally been announced!

Is anyone else excited enough to do the chicken dance?

I gave this game a try after discovering it has a translation patch and it's quite a bit of fun with quirky humor and a unique gameplay mechanic of needing to take pictures while avoiding falling underwear, rolling skateboards and bouncing dodgeballs.

What do you think of the game?

I'm considering buying one of these to get RGB SCART video out of. Has anyone tried this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC-Engine-AV-Booster-RGBS-output-TurboGrafx-16-Composite-RCA-RGB-/311719707543?

I also noticed that I may need to cut plastic off the connector to get it to work on a US TurboGrafx.

Off-Topic / Dragon's Lair: The Movie
10/26/2015, 05:52 PM
Don Bluth has put up a kickstarter to begin the process of getting Dragon's Lair: The Movie made.

As I've brought up a few times in other threads, traditional animation especially in the West is basically dead. So it would be really exciting to see this project take off.

Maddox made a pretty great video here.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Let's talk about US/Canada released sports games, which ones are your favorites.

I personally have a 1./1A tie between "Hit the Ice" and "World Court Tennis" but I'm curious to hear what others everyone else likes.

I just watched this video.
I'm appalled. Regardless of the fact that Contra isn't even that hard of a game. These kids are fucking terrible. Just jumping into enemy fire and complaining "In Call of Duty you can get shot like 10 times before you die".

Do kids these days really need tutorials to play something as simple as Contra?

Off-Topic / Fitness
05/06/2015, 10:19 AM
So like many people with a desk job and bad eating habits, as the years have gone by my level of fitness has dropped to unhealthy levels. This week I've started dieting and perhaps just as importantly joined a gym to try to get into better shape. Outside of my high school and college gyms, I've not really worked out at a proper gym before but am getting in the habit of going immediately after work everyday.

My question for the board is do you go to the gym? If so how often? What kind of workouts do you do?

Ten years ago today I joined some web forum about PC Engine, PC-FX and TurboGrafx 16 games. And I'm happy to say that I'm still posting on a semi-regular basis. How long have you been on this forum and what brought you here?

General Gaming / Playstation TV
10/14/2014, 07:51 PM
Did anyone else pick one of these up?

Mine has spent the past few hours updating and downloading my free voucher game, with the apparently super congested Playstation Network.

I'm noticing no YouTube or Netflix app for it either right now.

Is anyone having more fun with theirs than I have so far?

We've had quite a few discussions regarding CDR compatibility and the various models of CD units but we've not had too many discussions about this on a more general level.

Due to the recent Dragon Slayer discussion I busted out a copy of Dragon Slayer I bought years ago that was scratched up and has since been run through a Spin Dr. Disc repair device. I've since upgraded to a better quality copy of this disc, but having kept the original one around I eventually decided to run it through a disc repair unit, I figured I'd give it a try on a few different systems as the last time I did so on my Duo it froze.

I first fired it up on my Turbo Grafx + CD and had no problems with playing the game. I then tried my original Turbo Duo and found it froze right as Logan leaves Exile ("We're under attack ma lard! monsters everywhar!"). Once that audio clip plays the game just freezes, so sure enough I tried it on my other Turbo Duo. The same problem occurs. I then tried it on the laseractive, and it played fine past that point. My general experience seems to be that despite replaced caps and even new lasers the Turbo Duo isn't nearly as strong at CD reading as the add-on CD.

Does anyone have other experiences with these to share?

I saw this news and was deeply saddened.

I'm a big fan of their work and I see this as a big loss for 2D animation.

Feedback / My post count went down?
10/08/2013, 08:56 AM
I noticed I was nearing 2000 a few days ago, and my post count has seemingly gone down. Might that be due to a thread being deleted? A recalculation of posts or some other bug?

I don't mean to pull a Nando here but.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/09/20/konami-licensing-hudson-ips-like-far-east-of-eden-to-other-companies/

It looks like Konami licensed out Tengai Makyou to another company, more could be coming.

I finally had the chance to play Annete Futatabi for Mega CD, the sequel to one of my favorite Genesis games El Viento, and even though I knew going in this was a lousy beat-em up. I had no idea how bad it actually was until I tried it. Enemies hide from you off screen in inaccessible places, lousy collision detection, lots of slowdown, mindless AI. It's hard to express how bad this game is.

What are some games you knew going in were going to be bad, but let you down even more than expected?
#25
I tried doing a search for this but didn't come up with much. Is there a list of which games support the Express/GT in link mode. I know Bomberman, Bomberman 93, Spin Pair and Falcon off the top of my head. Anyone know any others (does Bomberman 94 support it for example)?

General Gaming / Fun with Retr0bright
03/17/2013, 07:57 PM
I recently obtained a very inexpensive Famicom. Unfortunately it was quite, quite yellowed to a point where it was nearly brown. Determined to correct this and restore it to it's original beauty I set out to obtain the ingridients to make the legendary de-yellowing gel known as Retr0bright and here are the results.

This is after having basically washed up the Famicom but before having applied any Retr0bright.
IMG

Here it is after one approximately three hour treatment.

IMG

Here it is after a second roughly 11 hour treatment (two coats of Retr0brite were applied)

IMG

Third treatment completed. This was two coatings. Left it out in the sun approximately 11 hours.

IMG

Treatment #4 Completed

IMG

Treatment #5 completed.

IMG

And after treatment #6 which will be the final treatment

IMG

It's pretty close to looking good as new. Unfortunately I'm getting diminished returns with every subsequent treatment so I've finished with this Famicom for now. Anyone else have any good Retr0bright projects?

I have a couple controllers where select and start need to be jammed in to be recognized. I've gone through, cleaned out the PCB of the controller and reassembled to no avail. Having repaired many NES controllers in the past I've had to replace rubber pads on select and start buttons however for regular TG16 (and PCE) pads the start buttons stick out further than for NES. So those replacement rubber pads are basically stock with the controller and as a result not a good replacement. Has anyone else found (besides sacrificing other pads) good replacement rubber pads for TG16/PCE pads?

I tried out 3x3 eyes for the first time, popped it in my arcade card equipped Duo, When you boot the game it starts a countdown starting at 30 and then starts to wind down. This counter would just stall and probably took around 2 minutes to actually load. Is this my disc, my Duo, or is this normal?
#29
I figured it might be a good idea to put together a thread where we go over the pluses and minuses of various HuCard converters. Example,

The Diving board converter works well and works in a Duo without breaking off the HuCard door but is long and flimsy. IMG

Chopsado's attach directly to the HuCard and are inexpensive but can be somewhat difficult to apply to the cards.

Does anyone want to add different convertors pluses and minuses (and pictures) so we can better document the different convertors and their strengths and weaknesses?
#30
I've not seen a thread or a list of this before so I figured I'd ask. What controllers came with what model of Hardware, the original PCE came with the turbo-less white PCE pad for example. The Shuttle came with a unique looking controller, and Duo-RX came with the six button pad. Other than that as far as I'm aware they were all basically the same pads just with different color scheme, the question I have is what color pads came with all the other hardware variations?

Off-Topic / Monster World IV

I saw Monster World IV hit Virtual Console yesterday and finally picked it up after all these years. It's a very solid games, and it's in English. Has anyone else played it?

I've noticed a few types of HuCard sleeves in the wild. The first are the standard ones, the second have kind of a grainy texture, still made of clear plastic but a thick grainy texture. I've noticed these coming with a lot of TTI games so I have a feeling these were actually packed in with US TurboGrafx games. Has anyone else noticed different types?

WTB: US Chase H.Q. with manual and Gunboat with manual to finish my US Huey set. If anyone has either of these for sale send me a private message or reply here.

Added in edit: Gunboat acquired. Only Chase HQ remains.

Everyone has an Achilles heel of a game, I'll list two series for me that come to mind as being really difficult and I never got a feel for playing.

First off is Ghosts N Goblins/Ghouls N Ghosts. I am terrible at those games.

The second series I suck at is R-Type.

What about everyone else?
#36
I know the PAL TurboGrafx uses TG16 not PCE/Duo controllers. But does anyone know if it's compatible with the Turbo Booster, Turbo Booster Plus or CD-ROM?
#38
I should have a working TurboGrafx with add-on CD-ROM setup shortly. Unfortunately, I don't own a 3.0 system card or an arcade card pro to play games above 2.0. Does anyone have an extra they're looking to sell. If so PM me.
#39
Read the description, are these simply mislabeled cables similar to those at monoprice? Or are these TG16 cables?

Happy Birthday SuperDeadite!

I will have a SuperGrafx in a few days and am looking to pick up a few Super HuCards, I will have Ghouls N Ghosts with it, But am considering Aldynes and Darius Plus.

Anyone know roughly the going rates for these games? Also what SuperGrafx advantages does Darius Plus have over playing it in a regular PC Engine?
#43
Which announced but unreleased Turbo game are you most disappointed about not being released for the domestic Turbo. I pulled together a list of good ones that were announced at various times but not released.
#44
What do you think the worst TG16 game is? I've tried to list off all the most likely culprits. Let me know if you have any more to add.

In listening to various chiptunes I've found myself very drawn to listening to music coming out of the Master System. It has a very unique sound to it, I could listen to 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog or Phantasy Star 1 music for hours.

Does anyone have a favorite system soundchip?

I figured I'd ask the board what anime they like.

I'm very particular about anime and for a long time didn't really watch much of it (largely because most of what I saw was crap). I grew up watching old Streamline distributed movies in edited fashion on local broadcast TV here in Chicago, enjoyed a lot of the movies I saw. Then as anime because more popular in the US as the mid 90s approached, I saw more and more crap and really quit seeking out good anime.

I now have every Studio Ghibli movie in one form or another and am for the most part am a fan as I'm greatly impressed by quality 2D hand drawn style animation, while I borderline detest CG animation.

In any event I was wondering what anime people here like or recommend, or watch?

I just played Night Creatures for the first time, oh my god is it terrible. I spent about five minutes ducking with attack on juggling three enemies in the air. Then a bird eventually killed me. I thought, well maybe I'm missing something. I continued playing. This is horrible, how did this even get released. This is worse than either of the Disney games.

I found one about the systems Mascot

Anyone have any others that aren't reviews or history videos?

I decided to make this very strange poll because it seems to come up quite frequently in the shotbox. The TurboGrafx seems to be in proportionately popular in certain regions of the country. I thought it might be a good idea to test this out and find out where you're from, and also what got you into the TurboGrafx in the first place.

I found a loose copy of it up for grabs. What's a fair price to pay for it?
