10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I too have improved with age. 8)

If you collect a certain power-up, you will not have to start at the beginning of the level after you die. These power-ups are random as far as I know and must be activated. They start as a normal power-up, but when shot, they freeze in position and absorb energy. When you've pumped them up enough, they start to flash as well as move again; grab it and you will be granted the ability in question.

People buy software?

While I am for freedom of speech and protest, I think that the act in question is foolish as it will only lead to more hate. However, I do not see how this act would anger any logical person. Books are just objects; what is the significance of their destruction? Burning the Quran does not hurt the Islamic religion, or anything else. I could care less if some asshole burned a copy of AirZonk (my favorite turbo game.)

I'm tired of sale threads that are just links to ebay; there should be a rule against that.

I have also suffered from such an instance; the wait for the post office to reopen is quite unbearable :x

I'll give you some tips to get you through the first 2 levels. One great tip is that there is a hidden fairy in level one. There is a bush on the right side of the screen immediately before the stream. Shoot this bush to rescue the fairy. When you die, the fairy will grant you some of your power-ups back. I'm sure there are hidden fairies in the other levels, but I haven't found them. As far as the bosses go, I use the blue laser on the level one boss and the machine gun on the level two boss. This makes your job a lot easier. For the level one boss, get real close to him while blasting your laser before he is fully rendered on the screen; this should obliterate him before he even gets to fire on you. The level two boss just requires some fancy bullet/kamikaze plane dodging along with a large spread machine gun. There is not much advice I can give you for the latter levels; they start to get hard starting with the level three boss, who is a chore to beat. With a little practice, you'll find yourself progressing further and further into the game. good luck!

I like the Turbo version a hell of a lot better than the Jag version. The Jag version has an annoying sidebar that kills the mood as well as a controller that takes away from the experience. The Turbo version on the other hand is the opposite: Awesome controls and no annoying sidebar; it really does feel like the arcade. I love when I press run and am greeted with the awesome level one music in TurboGrafx-16 PSG; It doesn't get any better than that. I've taken my copy on the toilet with a TurboExpress on many occasions! I guarantee that you will be satisfied with your purchase of Raiden for the TurboGrafx-16. 8)

Ribbon cable replacement is difficult, but not impossible. I had to replace the ribbon cable on a ps2; it wasn't that bad. However, the replacement ribbon cable for the ps2 was readily available, in your case, you would have to find a universal replacement ribbon cable.

Haha, that would be cool.  I'm hoping to find an easy computer program to pick it, maybe there's even a live online one somewhere.  Otherwise, I'll just assign numbers to each name and write a quick random number generator on the calculator lol.
I made one for you! (windows only =P)

I voted for Columns, Implode, and Panic Bomber (not in any particular order.) Columns is a definite classic for me; I love the music on it. Implode is just strange and addicting for me, lol. Panic Bomber is really just lots of fun.

use the blue/water armor along with wise spending of your jewels. Don't forget to use the jewel cheat code.

LORDS OF THUNDER cheats

Boss Mode
Go to the configure screen, set up level=HARD, music=01 and sound=01, then press Select+I (you can return to level=NORMAL before exiting) - this will bypass the stage and go directly to each stage's boss.

Start with 10K crystals
Go to the configure screen, set up level=SUPER, music=02 and sound=02, then press Select+I.

Looks like square may be dismissing the fatigue system. idk. To be honest, I've been looking at porn all day on that site geralds linked lol.

There is a pretty decent list on pceDaisakusen. I've already sorted the list to U.S. only for you in the below link:

Quote from: guest on 08/14/2010, 09:09 AMDoes anyone else have dreams where you walk into some random shop and spot rare/unowned PC Engine games hidden away somewhere? Or is it just me?
lol, I get those quite frequently. I hate waking up and not having the games though!

The mirai will work on a PC-Engine console if you ground pin 29 on the Hu6280. This grounding is very difficult as said pin can break off if you are not careful; you must be very gentle. Check this link for further information:

I used to steal milk crates to put my vinyl in, lol. Then I found out that I could get better shaped and more attractively colored crates at the hardware store.

Water is my favorite armor. I like the spread it has when powered up.

Well, it definitely looks like a fuse (it especially reminds me of the fuse I blew on my Famicom, lol). I assume you do not know how to test a fuse (hence this thread), so I will tell you. Grab your multi-meter and set it to continuity. Apply the red probe to one metal leg of the fuse and the black probe to the other leg. If you get a beep, your fuse is alive. If you get nothing, your fuse has failed. Any fuse that meets the device's requirements may be used; which would be one amp in the case of the TurboExpress. Ultimately, you may jump said fuse with a wire as a temporary fix, but this method is neither endorsed nor advised by turbo D. I will also provide a quote from myself which I left for another user about continuity testing. Said quote contains a link to a nice tutorial on using the multi-meter continuity setting:

Quote from: turbo D on 04/29/2010, 01:06 AMGrab a multi-meter and follow the trace of where the solder pad used to be (use the continuity setting, looks like this: -l>l-))) .) I imagine you can follow it to one of those holes that are in close proximity. If one of those holes works out, then you've scored as you can run one of your cap legs through it and solder away. Good luck friend. =D

Quote from: kid_rondeau on 08/07/2010, 06:03 AMI don't know...maybe if it is a fuse, it'll say "F01" or whatever.
If you take a closer look at the provided picture, you will be able to make out "F500 1A" above the fuse.

Not too well, but they get the job done. You kinda have to point them at the receiver. They made my journey through the Ys games a lot funner that it would have been with a cord 8).

It's one of those funky SEGA arcade machines.

good deal considering I paid around double; my set was new though and shipped from Japan, so go figure. If you're wondering, I bought it from that expensive dude with the gay pink backgrounds on ebay; I think his name is Yoshi or something like that.

Why not just hot glue a hucard sleeve to the jewel case; that's how the keith courage hucard came. lol @ your popsicle stick cradle =D>. By the way truckman, you might enjoy this:

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/28/2010, 02:39 PMMost of these OEMs make as much money from kickbacks from putting shortcuts for trial software on the desktop (something that Apple doesn't do at all) than they do by actually selling the computer itself. Are you saying that is what they should be aiming for?
Why include links to trial software for kickbacks when the only software that works(or is worth using) on Mac OS is made by Apple? lol. As far as the iphone goes, the same situation is existent except for the fact that jailbreaking has recently become a legal practice(which I was happy to hear).

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/28/2010, 02:39 PMAnyone who was into computers in the 80s had a much better selection*... but that was a different time. Computers were much more reliable back then, and there were more OS to chose from, but computers also cost a lot more and didn't do nearly as much stuff so...its a trade off.
I disagree about machines and/or OSs being more reliable in the eighties. The techniques in software design as well as the manufacture of hardware we have today is so far ahead of the technologies of the eighties. In fact (to stay on topic) my cellular phone is a more powerful and more reliable computer than any computer built in the eighties.

Together they make the ultimate shitter: the jaguar lays out the foundation and the bowl and the R (picture it on top of the jag) is the tank. lol. Also, paint the whole getup the color of the R; seems to be the right color.

Quote from: MaximumRD on 07/23/2010, 12:05 AMI was still curious about what the members here think of them in general, opinions, comments, stories.
I really love mine. The best use I make of it is playing turbo on the toilet, lol. It is really quite addictive to play as an alternative to a television setup; you can easily switch cards in an instant without having to get up or anything like that. In fact, I have a special stack of TurboExpress designated hucards that I transport and play exclusively on my TurboExpress!

Quote from: MaximumRD on 07/23/2010, 12:05 AMIs it particularly rare compared to the other NEC consoles?
I don't think it is particularly rare, but it does seem to have held its value well.

Quote from: MaximumRD on 07/23/2010, 12:05 AMMany problems with them?
Unfortunately, our awesome handheld tends to suffer from leaky || dried-out capacitors :( However, the capacitor replacement is not difficult for someone with soldering capabilities.

Quote from: MaximumRD on 07/23/2010, 12:05 AMCompatibility issues?
The only issue is that it is not region free. Playing PC-Engine games on a TurboExpress && vise versa, will require some sort of hucard converter || region modification.
#31
Your assumption is correct; a hucard converter is required to run a jdm sys3.0 in a Turbo! And yes, muuch cheaper to go the jdm route. I did (prior to getting a duo, lol (even though I now have le~ubber Arcade Pro!!!)), it was ~$30 compared to a U.S. sys3.0 that runs around $100+ on eBay. I plan to go the modded Rx route in the future, though throwing a super sheedee romu romu onto the back of my supergrafx causing it to polymorph into transformer snalien decepticon would be bad-ass!?!

I think he came from le~swissland

I like vinyl best, but c.d.s are more convenient for ripping. It is very hard to get music on vinyl these days. If anyone cares, I have technics sl1200's w/ sure m44-7's w00t 8)

oh man, powergate really sucks, lmao! I played it on emulator; don't think I will be picking that one up. I don't really have any games too terrible in my collection except for maybe those momotaro games (I bought them for like 25 cents each lol).
#36
Super cool and very high quality. I felt like I was reading it at the newsstand back in the day of the Turbo! :)

Hachi Roku, dorifto Zeta san!

lol, that's pretty cool. Now all you need is a TGX kiosk like the one Sparky has.

You should come to So-Cal; we have beaches!

you could also teach me programing

that and also the fact that rom size had a lot to do with it. The roms on superhucard are all a certain size or lower (2mbit I think?).

Good to hear that the sale is underway: now you can tell us the market value! :)

That would be pretty cool, kinda like that sharp x thing that has the pc engine, but only white instead. hehe. Man, I sure wish I had some pancakes right now....not sure why though =P~
#47
My broski has one that has been modified with what looks like some sort of rubberband/paperclip contraption, lmao! I guess the TurboGrafx-16+CD case is prone to hinge breakage.

Hey Jason, welcome to the forums! If you live in America(which your post implies you do), your console is not dead(yay!). Instead of tuning to channels 1-4, you need to tune into something more on the lines of 95 & up. I had the same problem when I first got a jdm rf console(I think it was a famicom). As far as the power thing goes, I have a few guidelines for you to follow to avoid frying anything(with this or future consoles). Generally, +1 or 2 volts will not harm anything. Amperage just has to meet the minimum that your system requires, as the console will only draw out as many amps as it desires; so it's okay to have a psu with a high amperage rating. The most important thing that I cannot stress enough is the polarity of the psu and the console: they have to match! This is how many dudes fry their famicoms with nes psus(not me, I swear). Below is a polarity pic for you to ogle. Hope this helps.
