10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: guest on 06/27/2017, 05:52 PMThe more I look at the pictures the more this looks like it was pulled from a cabinet similar to the one another member here has.  If I remember right (it's been awhile) his had a lot of those molex/quick disconnect connectors and that go to each section (monitor, power, controls, coin mech, etc) and they weren't all off a unified JAMMA connection.

A little info on where/how you found it would be nice to know before you throw it up on ebay.  Like NecroPhile said I think there is some value, but your market is real small considering it is untested as well.
Yeah, if you are willing to hang on to it for a couple weeks, I'd love to do some research and see if it fits in the cab. I won't pay tons for it, but maybe we can work something out. I'm pretty busy for the next couple weeks though.

Quote from: BigusSchmuck on 02/23/2017, 10:44 PMCurious, has the homebrewn scene cracked huvideo? It would be interesting to see what else could be used with it and what limitations you could do with it. It would be rather humorous to see like an early Turbo/PCE commercial being played on the platform. It also would be even better to see Guilver Boy get a proper fan translation some day. :)
Tom had a HuVideo demo with Bubblegum Crisis videos, IIRC.

Quote from: TheClash603 on 02/18/2017, 12:01 PMI just watched the conference at your suggestion, I did not see anything better or worse than I've seen from politicians in the 20 years I've been old enough to follow.  Which points of the video were standout problems in your opinion?
I know this wasn't directed at me, but calling news "very fake news", repeating bullshit ("won in a landslide!"), and bragging about how awesome he is when in reality he hasn't done much of anything yet were my problems with it. Basically he acted like a douche, and I get it. That's his personality and some people love him for it. It irritates the shit out of me, and again, I get it. Some people love the fact that he pisses off people.

He's only been in office for less than a month. I don't think the sky is falling and I don't think he'll end all of humanity. Frankly he hasn't actually done anything terrible yet aside from acting like a jackass. I'm hopeful that he'll do a great job. I just wish he'd act like an adult.

QuoteThe irony with this thread and with all similar conversations on all sides is that we are primarily a centrist country, we just let the loud voices on both sides overpower the sensible centrists.
I'm with you here. It gets old seeing meme after meme, slogan after slogan shouted at me about "god emperor trump"  just as much as it gets old being told that Trump is the worst thing that's ever happened and all his supporters are racist misogynists who want to end anything that isn't white and male.

I really liked the phone prior to this. I just went to the Verizon store, it's covered under warranty so that's good news. :D They're overnighting me a new phone, so I just have to endure a day without phone.

EDIT:

As a huge PCE fan with a couple games I've worked on being demoed, I walked away with a stack of Intellivision and Neo Geo games. :P

Sarumaru turned out to be as cool as people say, which was honestly a relief. :) Tried out Henshin Engine for the first time and it's much more satisfying than it appears in videos. The new miniboss in the latest stage was a nice surprise.
Wish I could have met up with you. Sadler and myself hung out by that booth for a good hour or two on Saturday chit chatting. Once again, we missed Aaron lol but at least I got the opportunity to meet with a few folks here. It was so unbelievable how many the vendors were this year in comparison to last year. I got a few pictures I can post of my fat arse and the Oregon Trail booth and of course kicking ass in RC Proam until some schmuck (no relation) beat out my top score by literally a few hundred points. Overall, a lot of fun and got a chance to meet with a few other youtube guys (8-bit guy, The gaming historian and Ben Heck) and will definitely make a trip there next year if my new job permits it.
Yeah, it was awesome getting to meet you guys! I *think* I saw Black Tiger at sarus booth Saturday and Sunday, but he seemed pretty engrossed in the game and I didn't introduce myself. I picked up some boxes from syphic, and a few misc other games. I also cornered Bob Mackey in a bar and drunkenly demanded more tg16 episodes. He was super cool and chatted with me and my buddy for an hour or so. Anyway, I had a great time! Hope to do it again next year! :D

I plowed through 10 seasons of the X Files (and both movies) and the one season of The Lone Gunmen earlier this year and I've been looking for something to fill the void. Several years ago I started watching Fringe which certainly had an X Files feel to it. Unfortunately Fringe season 1 is pretty rough. A buddy of mine has been telling me for years that Fringe really gets awesome and just stick with it, but I gave up near the beginning of season 2. I thought I knew what the big reveal was and it just didn't live up to the hype for me. Still, in my desperation, I had to watch something, so I figured I'd give Fringe another go.

HOLY. SHIT.

My buddy wasn't joking, this show gets damn awesome and I had quit just before it got awesome. The episode "Peter" in season 2 (episode 16) is where it gets amazing. I mean, there are decent episodes before this, but after this it's just great. Is it as good as the X Files? Well... probably not, but the mythology of Fringe is much better than that of the X Files. So that's what I'm watching now, I'm about midway through season 3.

Quote from: guest on 08/19/2016, 05:50 PMWell I guess I should say it's not necessarily the hobby that's getting bad (except in terms of higher prices) but more the way that many newer folks in the community are acting.  To me it's always about getting to play/replay fun games when I can.  The goal is not always collecting, but having a library of titles that I want to play and enjoy.

Obviously I could just use CDRs and Everdrives for the whole thing and never need to "collect" anything but I suppose there's a fun aspect to being able to look through what I've got and decide on what to play for the evening and go from there instead of just scrolling through a ROM list.  I can't say I'm not a collector (or collectard) as well either, who else out there has a complete Pico collection.  But seeing the "professional collector" makes me envision a profiteer with no desire to even enjoy the games, just collect them and put them on shelves.

Also, picture from FB :P

Yeah, fair enough. As you know, I'm all about having original stuff. I love fondling boxes, reading manuals, etc. :D I guess I mostly feel that way about TG16 stuff though, so I'm not too upset if I'll never afford all the SNES (or whatever) games I wish I had. I feel like, to me, the larger enjoyment is stuff I listed above. Those Atari games for the TG16 someone posted youtube vids of a few weeks ago far outweighs my inability to find Contra III for a reasonable price. :D

As for the pic, someone get that man a phone charger quick! :shock:

Quote from: BlueBMW on 08/19/2016, 01:04 PMTherein lies the key problem with this hobby now.  You really can't sell anything cheap anymore.  If you offer something at a good price there's a good chance someone will flip it.  Too many greedy vultures these days.  It's not a hobby anymore, it's a business.  When I saw someone use the term "Professional Collector" on Facebook I knew the hobby was done.
Lol, I saw that asshat on the Obey group as well.
I can't remember if I've asked this before, but what is this hobby to you guys? To me it's about playing games I grew up with, learning things I never knew about the systems I grew up with and occasionally kicking it with people who enjoy the same (side note: we should kick it again! :D ). People spending lots on a repro or anything else, calling themselves a professional collector or whatever just doesn't factor into the equation. I just don't care. Maybe I'd care more if I was on the FB groups. :) I just want to get all nostalgic and nerd out with folks that actually know what the TG16 is.

I've been sticking with my diet pretty well, and I've been walking 5ish miles a day. Yesterday marked day 30 without beer. I think I lost most of the easy weight already, I'm only down a bit over a pound in the past few days. I've tried to throw in some biking and bodyweight workouts this week, so I'm telling myself the slower rate of weight loss is due to the massive amount of muscle I've put on from doing pushups a couple times this week. :D

EDIT: I am below 210 for the first time in I don't know how long, at least 3 years. Just barely below 210, but that feels great. Can't wait to see the scale show something below 200!

So are you game for participating in a weight loss competition/support group thing? Weekly weigh-in via PM. I'd maintain two progress charts comparing lbs lost and % body mass lost for all participants.

I've given a little more thought to prizes and will probably give away some turbo magazines to the winner(s), and a JO crystal to any participant who finishes with a net loss... assuming anyone wants to participate.
I'd be down for this. Last November I hit my all time fattest: 237.4 lbs. :( Most of this year I've been fairly steady around 220-225 without really doing anything special. July 5th I started really trying to make an effort again. I gave up all beer and I've been trying to eat at keto as possible the past week or so. I'm probably taking in too much protein and not enough fat, but today I clocked in at 212.6, down from 223.8 on the 5th.  I feel pretty damn amazing. :D

Heh, that's pretty creative!

Edit: Because this forum hates double posts.

public String withouEnd2(String str) {
  Map<Boolean,Integer> scalar = new HashMap <Boolean,Integer>();
  scalar.put(true,0);
  scalar.put(false,1);
  int len = str.length();
  int scale = scalar.get(len < 3);

  int start = 1 * scale;
  int end = (len -1) * scale;
  return str.substring(start, end);
}

The editor on that page is a bit weird. It doesn't support the diamond operator and it really dislikes static.

Is this cheating?

public String withouEnd2(String str) {
  int len = str.length();
  int start =Math.max(0,Math.min(1, len - 1));
  int end =Math.max(0, len -1);
  return str.substring(start, end);
}

Edit: first time I've written code on my phone. That's kinda awesome!  :D

Edit 2: the obvious solution is to abuse exceptions. Please don't abuse exceptions. You could also use a Map or polymorphism.

My first experience with Java was making a game sponsored by Sun as my senior project in college. I knew C/C++ and some assembly going in to it and I knew that Java ran on a virtual machine and had garbage collection. I was pretty biased against Java, I wanted to be as close to the hardware as possible. Fortunately Sun had been working on JOGL, which allowed us to use shaders to do some effects that were neat at the time (normal mapping, environment mapping, procedural textures on terrain, etc).

After I graduated I got a job working on software that basically amounted to a game editor. I convinced them to let me redo the 2D graphics in it with 3D graphics using JOGL. That code is still in use 10 years later. :D I'm still at the same place now, still using Java (and some C#). In the years since college I've come to appreciate the ease that Java allows you to do things, but I do think it's significantly behind C#. I guess I'm a bit out of the loop with how features are handled behind the scenes in 1.8, but generics were pretty hacky in Java 1.5 (the type didn't exist at run time). 1.8 added lambda expressions and concurrent programming is a lot easier than it used to be thanks to parallel streams. I still prefer C# to Java, but Java is slowly catching up. I'd rather use Java or C# than C or C++ nowadays.

EDIT: God, I really need to proofread what I write.
