10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

L-DIS and Gradius 2

The last of the higher rated shooters I've played for the system. A delight to play. I haven't beaten it either but I'm working on it.

Someone bought the whole lot.

Thanks for looking..

Thanks to those who bought games. I cleaned up the list removing the sold games and lowered the price on the games with no manual. Probably throw the remaining games on Ebay Friday if they don't sell on here by then...

1.) Soldier Blade
2.) Nexzr
3.) Lords of Thunder
4.) Rayxanber 2
5.) Gate of Thunder

Gosh, Image Fight 2 is so close to these also, I could make an argument for all 6 they are the best on the system.
#6
Street Fighter 2 on easiest mode. They can mash buttons and win and of course it looks cool.

Quote from: geise on 02/14/2014, 03:03 PMAs of right now I think Image Fight is the toughest game I've played on the pc-engine.  That's mainly cause I've never really played the Arcade and I just got the Hu card this past year.  I find it more challenging than Rayxanber II (which is only hard on level 4 due to slow down) and Tatsujin.
Man, I love Image Fight, Image Fight 2 and Rayxanber II. All three are easy in my top 10 PCE shooters. However, I have 1CC both Image Fights but never been able to in Rayxanber II and I've played Ray II more than both Image Fights combined. I've been to the final boss twice on my first credit but failed those tries. The 6th level is also crazy hard (I think) but not in the frustrating way of level 4. You have to memorize the whole level and get in a flow where you are moving in and out without really thinking blasting every canon avoiding the moving boulder things (I love it).

Agree.  Anyone beat it?  Any tips for getting passed level 4?  I can easily get to level 4, but beating the level seems impossible for me.  I've attempted level 4 over 100 times now and only got to the boss once.
I've beat it lots of times. Level 4, during the 2nd half the stage get the ice weapon and use the straight up or down position (this will help kill the chaser aliens quickest). Memorize when all the snakes and aliens come out and you will need to use your speed burst quite a bit to try to avoid all the mayhem. Make sure your turbo switch is in the middle position for shooting. Concentrate on killing the aliens and avoiding the balls. It takes skill, memorization and some luck as those bouncing balls are unpredictable.

Keep playing!! Level 6 is my favorite level of any shooter ever and stage 5 is also very cool!!!

Figured it out, can't use the duotap for 1 player. Is that in the manual?
#11
Quote from: Tatsujin on 01/17/2014, 10:55 PMso you're talking AI cho aniki?
No Cho Aniki - the sidearms don't shoot - looking at youtube videos and a picture in the manual they seem to have the ability and I can't figure it out. My bodybuilder sidearms just sit next to me doing nothing. Here is a video that shows them working:
#12
I just started playing this but how do you make the sidearms shoot and do the charge weapon? All they do is sit there for me unless I hit the other button then they go out towards the enemy.
#13
Forgotten Worlds is great and way better than both. Sidearms is OK in doses but just not addicting to me. Spriggan Mark 2 is fun but not great but I would take it over Sidearms pretty easily though.

Quote from: monads on 12/31/2013, 09:56 PMPassed it!!!  I switched to the male fighter ship and upgraded the 'V' weapon to max.    My favorite stage has gotta be level 6.  I love flying/dodging through an asteroid field to cool tunes :)
Yes, I love stage 5 and 6, great tunes and action. Glad you beat the Boss. For me I memorize when she comes to the bottom and go in the top corner when she does then go back down. I don't follow back and forth when she shoots those blue energy ovals, I just avoid when she comes over me and keep shooting.

Awesome game, one of the most underrated shooters IMO - Tons of action, great music and bosses. I could probably help what are you stuck on? The Boss?
#16
Soldier Blade is way better. It has my favorite chip tunes, perfect difficulty, plus you get the best Caravan mode ever. I like Axeley but never really go back to it. I have way more fun shooting through Soldier Blade and play through it at least a few times a year.
#17
I think MUSHA is the most overrated shooter ever.
#18
Both are great games! I'll take GoT by a little since it has better graphics and sound.

I've never played TF4 but recently picked up a copy; going to get into it soon.

When I was a kid we my bro and I with our friends played a ton of World Class Baseball, Final Lap Twin and Bomberman 93

Awesome! Thanks guys

Re: W-Ring

It's not that it is horrible, and others may like it but for me everything was just average. Average graphics, average sound, average gameplay, nothing special about level design, bosses are average to below average, there are 5 weapons but none are that cool and one overpowers every boss. There are a couple sort of cool spots but I was looking forward to the game and wasn't really impressed.
#24
W-Ring - Meh, not as good as I hoped.
#25
If it's not too late I don't own this one and would like in

I just finally played through Download 2 and am trying to figure out which one I like better. Overall I think the graphics, music, and bosses slightly better in Download 2. I also like cycling through the different weapons during the stages in Download 2. The first Download is more difficult, faster action and I like the life bar system. Both are fun games worth a play especially for shooter fans.
#27
I'd buy the bottom one
#28
Serious shooters prefer pot.
#30
Both games are above average but neither are great. I picked SSS since it has a better challenge, beat that sucker for the first time ever last night!!

I play through the Madden playoffs every year during real football playoffs. Gives me a reason to play, as I loved this game as a kid. The FMV would have been super cool if they left out the cheesy 100LB white guy scoring a TD celebrations. It's funny now, but was stupid and cheesy then. The refs, coin flip, fans, intro etc were all pretty cool back then I thought.

If you suck at football games be the Cowboys and you will probably beat the Madden Bowl easy.
#32
Soldier Blade for me, even as a kid I liked it better. The Caravan puts it over the top. I have spent countless hours over the last 20 years playing Soldier Blade. One life clears and maxing scores in the Caravan, it's probably my favorite shooter of all time. Along with Bomberman 93 it's the reason I have continued to love and collect for the system.

95% of my Turbo gaming happens in winter. I live in MN and take advantage of the nice weather when we get it. Hibernate and play video games in the winter. Typically I play shooters when I play turbo/pc engine since there are so many I have not played.

I was there the first time they played a Rave in the US in 1996: One of the best nights of my life: Here is video from that night:

Yes, gain more levels. The first time I played I think I was around 40 or 41 with no problem beating the game. 2nd time got to her at 36 couldn't beat her and too lazy to get out of maze, level up then go back in so I deleted my file in defeat.

Quote from: rag-time4 on 03/30/2013, 01:24 AMHigh score table updated! Sorry for the delay! Very impressive! Have you tried playing without auto fire?
Thanks, I messed with just about everything a little bit. Maybe I should hook up my Turbo Stick and give the single shot mode another go. I feel uncomfortable with a regular pad without auto fire. I may have to play some again soon, I had a ton of fun with both Image Fight games this winter. I was able to beat the leader class but not 1CC it - didn't play much Captian but put some time in CP just for the absurd hardness of it which was fun for awhile. The recruit class is def the most fun because it's hard but not stupid hard.

A tip that helped me on the 3, 5, 6 bosses for sure is have speed/pod shot turbo switch up and find the weak spot get your pod on it and the pod shot just destroys the bosses. That 6th boss pissed me off like crazy till I figured that out then he became pretty easy. Works on leader class also.

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 03/04/2013, 11:10 AMThe fact that it forces you to choose a different special weapon at every stage continue and start of every new stage I feel is still retarded as hell.

Also, as bad ass as the last boss looks visually, he has only two attack abilities, robot snake thing, and nerve vine like things. The former can be pretty cheap since it will stalk you and its rather large and not always easy to avoid, while the later vine attack crap is super easy to avoid since it has a limit on how far it can reach. Thats what I would call a pretty unbalanced last boss battle.
I do wish I could re-use some sub weapons on multiple stages but seems that certain ones that unlock around the level you need them are the ones that work best anyway. Play the hard mode and you are forced to use inferior sub weapons since you won't have enough points to get the right ones. I'd agree the last boss is pretty shitty and is personally the only major beef I have with the game.

It's not in my best of the best PCE shooters but I personally really enjoy the game.

Gate of Thunder
Image Fight 2
So, "playing through" means beating them.  Right?
A couple of these are relatively difficult, and I haven't beaten them yet, so I'm curious.
Yes, I meant playing through as in beating the games. The only one I can't 1CC is Rayxanber 2 but have come very close. I put a lot of time in all these games, if you get stuck on a spot I could probably help.

Quote from: guest on 02/08/2013, 02:45 PMThat wasn't his point though.

His point was he's a big boy now and he wants to play Warren Spector's Life: The game.  Now with more real-life-applicable content.

AKA:  The dickhead is too stupid to go outside and enjoy life and would rather play video games emulating real life.

Meanwhile, everyone else wants to escape real life and blow the fuck out of some aliens.
No shit!!
