10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 04/03/2018, 12:42 AMVoultar looked at it and he said: "C60 A.C. couples composite video. It doesn't have anything to do with csync."

I'm curious, what makes you think it's for C-sync? Either way though, it should be flipped.
You are absolutely correct. I just rebuzzed out the pins and found that it was indeed hooked to composite video rather than Csync. I never realized composite video would need to be amplified on the PCE.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 04/02/2018, 07:55 PMReverse the capacitor marked C60! If you use composite video or sync-on-composite for your RGB cable it could cause issues over time. Just flip it around. It's mounted in the wrong orientation. If you use C-sync for your RGB cable then you should be fine.

IMG
Actually, that capacitor C60 IS for Composite sync, not composite video.

So if you use a Csync cable, it should really be flipped around. However don't expect a change in video quality.

ahh, cool. I'll have to check that out.

I was under the impression there isn't a menu system.

My review of the Super SD System 3 is out!

Cross post from NG . com

I received the revised PCB for the SSDS3 from TerraOnion and put together this little quick video showing off the difference between the original and the revised board. My PCB is hand soldered rather than factory soldered, so that's how they were able to get it to me so quick.
My full in depth video will be posted next week.

Quote from: CZroe on 02/09/2018, 01:41 PMHey, man. Did you ever make a video about SSDSys3? I've been waiting for it to pop up but haven't seen it even though I have seen vague references to "Todd's review."
Not yet. I am waiting for my revised board.

Review will probably be up in about 2 weeks or less.

Edit: Ohh, and for anyone who has seen it already:

Has there been any compatibility tests of the new UpperGrafx? The SSDS3 has been tested with 100% game compatibility.

The DVI output is nice, but it mentions 1 frame of lag. Add that to whatever you TV has and that might be noticeable.

Also, the UpperGrafx still requires you to have all the system cards for whatever stuff you are playing. Actually, I don't think it emulates any Hucard system cards or games at all? The SSDS3 has that all built in. Supports all HU and CD stuffs.

And the instruction on the UpperGrafx website are cryptic as hell about what all features it has and what image formats it supports. It seems like you have to use their special tool to create the cd images.

Plus the thing is butt ugly compared to the Super SD System 3. But that's IMHO.

In my eyes, the only redeeming thing the UpperGrafx has is the DVI video output.

I would like to see a really good review on the UpperGrafx though. I looked and haven't seen anything yet.

I can confirm that jailbars are still present with the SSDS3 and you will need to do the internal jailbar fix to eliminate or reduce them.

Hi guys. I posted this at Neo-Geo.com and thought I would post it here too.

I have up for sale a recapped NEC Turboexpress. I completely recapped the unit and it now has beautiful and loud audio. However it will need some attention in the backlight as the picture comes and goes due to the back light needing attention. I took some pictures when it was working at first. I have included photos showing the condition of it and of my recapping job which I think came out pretty well.

Internal speaker and headphone jack both tested and working. All the controls and even turbo switches work.

Unit is in overall very, very good condition. Just needs the back light looked at. If you plan to replace the screen with a different one, then this won't matter.

Please don't purchase this unless this something you are willing to repair. This is a project machine.

Asking $225 shipped in the US or best offer - SOLD!!

Quote from: esteban on 02/08/2015, 09:19 AMYes, most folks prefer the arcade/HuCARD tunes.

They are great.

But I am glad that we (PCE fans) got the totally wacky Red Book for R-Type Complete, too. It is unique; I enjoy the 100% pure 80's vibe. Some (most) folks can't stomach it. Or, they only enjoy it as a "joke"...

IT AIN'T NO JOKE FOR ME.

:)
While I like the HuCard tunes, I kinda prefer the Complete CD music myself.

Especially the first stage music.

Current batch of amps are sold out Or pending payment.

I only have parts on hand to build about 10 more amps. I have ordered another 50 pcb's which will be in in a couple weeks.

I will build the remaining on hand amps probably in a week or so and offer them up for sale.

Also, in other news, I will once again be offering Cables and connectors! Connectors are on their way to me and I am waiting on parts for the cables. Plus I am hoping to receive some different, higher quality scart connectors to use with the cables. I had someone make a comment awhile back about the connectors not being super high quality and I tend to agree. So I am evaluating some gold plated ones that have a better design to them.

It will probably be a couple weeks before cables are offered. Just an FYI.

Sorry guys for the lack of response. I had temporarily suspended orders while I completed getting caught up to a backlog of orders.

However those are all shipped and I am free to build more.

Here is the thing: I don't currently have any more cables or connectors and not sure when (or if) I will resume building cables. Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

However, I am still building the amps. I no longer take preorders for them. I will post when I have a certain quantity available and they will be on a first come, first serve basis. I do it this way so I can build them when I have the free time and can do them in batches.

I expect to have more built this weekend.

Susbscribe to this thread that way you will be emailed when I post up for some for sale.

Quote from: guest on 03/24/2014, 01:06 PMGood job! Does this amp eliminate the annoying vertical "jail" bars?
Not really. However it isn't nearly as overly bright as the common transistor only RGB amp that many people use. It brings the video levels down to a more appropriate level so therefor the jail bars might not be as noticeable. thesteve has a fix for jail bars that works really well.

Quote from: schweaty on 03/24/2014, 02:14 PMlooks like a great board.  this might be a stupid question, but why are we using a SCART cable?  I am assuming that is all you could find that has a 8 pin DIN that has the right internals to hack up to make component connections?
I use scart cables because it's something retrogamers in the US have started adopting over the last 4 or 5 years for RGB video. And of course Europe has used them for 20+ years.

However you are free to build and use any kind of cable and connector combo you wish.

Also, these are the Scart cables I build for the kits:

Buy/Sell/Trade / New PCE/TG16 RGB amps
03/24/2014, 10:47 AM
I am now offering RGB amplifiers that are designed with the PC Engine and TurboGrafx16 in mind. It should work on a RGB capable N64, but I don't have one on hand to test it with.

This board uses the popular Texas Instruments THS7314 3 channel amplifier. It has a biasing network, decoupling caps and DC filtering caps. You might see some other designs that use the THS7314 and a couple resistors and that's it. Well, they are built wrong and not designed per the TI spec sheet. This circuit and pcb layout was designed by micro over @ NFGGames forum. I asked micro for his permission ahead of time to build and sell his amp design. You can also find a link to the gerber files for the pcbs in that thread.

So far to date I have built over 30 of these boards. Up to this point they have all been hand soldered. This is pretty time consuming as you can imagine, so starting with this run of boards I am switching to solder paste and a reflow device. This will allow me to build these at a far faster rate.

I have made a change to micro's circuit by opting to use 100 ohm resistors on the output rather than the original 75 ohm that he specs. I found that with 75 ohms the picture was a little too bright and over saturated where as passing it through 100 ohm resistors seems just about right. For more information, including pictures of folks installs or screenshots, see this thread @ Neo-geo.com.

The blank PCBs are fabbed in China/Hong Kong (of course) but everything else is assembled right here in Ohio.

Each board is approx. 1.25 inches long by .75 inches wide. It's tiny. Easy to fit in even the most cramped of spaces like the original white PCE:

IMG
Very first of the finished amps. New ones have cleaner soldering and output through100 ohm resistors.

IMG
Installed in a White PCE with 8 pin mini din connector replacing the stock RF unit.

IMG
Installed in a Duo-R.

IMG
Supergrafx install

The amps are fairly easy to install. They need 5v and ground for power. Then just solder 3 wires for Red, green and blue to the amp (from either the expansion port or Hu cpu) and then 3 wires from the amp to your RGB connector on your system. You will use composite video as your sync as this is only a 3 channel amplifier. The board can be secured down with simple double sided foam tape which is provided.

White PCE/CoreGrafx/TG16/SuperGrafx/SCDrom2 can tap RGB from either the bottom side of the expansion port or from the HU cpu directly. On any of the Duo's you must solder to the Hu cpu directly to obtain RGB.

I also offer kits that include 1 amp, an 8 pin din socket to replace the original 5 pin and a Euro Scart cable. This would be suitable for all PCE systems except the original White PCE and TG16 as they don't have 5 pin Din A/V outs. You will need to roll your own cable/connector solution on those machines. Mmmonkey's website has a good guide to replace the original RF socket with a 8 pin mini din (like my White PCE pictured above).

I wouldn't say this is a difficult install, but you need good hand soldering skills when soldering to the Hu CPU and appropriate desoldering tools if removing the stock 5 pin connector and replacing with an 8 pin din.

These are $25 shipped for each amp.

or

A kit which includes the Amp, 8 pin din socket and Euro Scart cable (Euro only, no JP21) which is $45 shipped.

These are domestic shipped prices. International will cost a couple dollars more.

I expect to have the PCBs on hand towards the end of this week/beginning of next week. I can then begin assembling them.

So I imagine the first of this batch will start shipping late next week and it will take a little longer for orders which include Scart cables since it takes a bit of time to build those.

For those that choose the kit, here is a pic of the back of the 8 pin din and where the RGB wires need to be soldered to correspond with the Scart cable wiring:

IMG

The 8 pin din will already have the 3 rear pins trimmed so that the it can be installed where the 5 pin din was.

If you have any questions, please post them in this thread. Want to order one? Shoot me a PM.

to solve jail-bar issue on rgb modded system replace capacitor C961 10uf with 100uf tant or 220uf aluminum.
the cap is from hu6260 pin43 to ground.
C142 on the TG16
Bumping this back up as I have a relevant question.

Anyone know if there is a corresponding cap to this in the Supergrafx?

I have installed the two tant caps from pins 41 and 43 to ground from the 6260, but curious if there is a similar cap to C961/C142 in the Supergrafx.

It looks like it might be C107 as it sits directly above the 6260 and is also a 10uF cap.

Thoughts?

Quote from: NightWolve on 03/26/2013, 12:31 AMWere you getting jailbars with S-Video or a RGB connection ?? Anyway, that's awesome! Supposedly, this is only a problem when tapping RGB, but just checking.
RGB. I see some very, very faint ones under some specific situations, but it's vastly improved.

Yes, thanks Steve for the great fix!!!
#28
Finally had a chance to install the 22uF Tants for the jailbar fix.

Works great!

If there are jailbars there now, it's damn hard to tell.
#29
Quote from: thesteve on 03/22/2013, 07:43 PMaluminum caps would likely need to be bigger

#30
Yep, JP Duo-R.

I might have to give this a go this weekend.

Already replaced C961 with a 220uf per thesteve and that made a slight improvement to the jailbars.
#31
Quote from: NightWolve on 03/20/2013, 07:57 PMYou need two 22 uF capacitors for it (16V rated or better). Solder one to pin 41 and ground, and the other to pin 43 and ground (negative ends to ground obviously if caps are polarized). They happen to be right near where the RGB and Sync pins are tapped, so might as well do it right after. Since the 6260 chip is on the bottom side of a US Turbo Duo, those small surface mount caps would work best in that case, see his 2nd photo here.
Would regular polarized aluminum caps be ok, or is a ceramic or tantalum cap really the best choice?
#32
Had this duo been recapped?

If not, I'm wondering if a leaking cap has ate away at some traces causing this?

Quote from: Nec.Game.head on 11/23/2012, 08:44 PMCool man thanks .. Will test them out with a multi meter first .. Are all +5 volt 7805 regulators the same ?? Or are their different ratings on them ?? Having fun learning about working on these consoles one day at a time ... This noob is giving it his best !!!

More or less. At least in the context of what you would replace the ones in the duo with.

7805 takes an input voltage of from between 7 volts up to, maybe, 30 some old volts (or higher) and outputs 5 volts with max amperage of 1 or 1.5 amps. Allows flexibility of input voltage to get a steady 5 volts out.

Anyways, I would test the built in 7805's first (after double checking the fuse). Basically when its powered on, the output pin should read approx. 5 volts. If its substantially less (or no voltage) then the 7805 is most likely toast and needs replaced. Check the input voltage as well.
#35
Radio Shack typically sells the 7805's in store...just in case you wanted them faster.

However, if you have a multimeter, I would advise testing them first to see if they are the problem before you go through the trouble of replacing them.

Would take but a few seconds to determine if they are outputting 5volts like they should.

Save you a hell of a lot of hassle if they are working fine.

That's good that it can be easily opened.

I am not sure of the tip size. Probably a 2.1mm or could be a 2.5mm.
#43
You could replace the cable and connector with a new one.

However I doubt that power brick is designed to be easily opened. Many of them are filled with glue or resin and aren't really designed to be opened or serviced.

Someone else will need to comment on the ease/feasibility of opening the original psu.
#44
Unless you want to replace the cable, use 3:1 or 4:1 shrink tube.
#45
As mentioned elsewhere, you need to do a full recap before any further troubleshooting.

Could be simply more bad caps or could be a cap that has leaked and ate away at a trace.
#46
Super slick!

Quote from: OldRover on 11/14/2012, 02:15 PM... but my preference for more simplistic gameplay also seeps into the games I code... MSR, Monolith, and JB were all coded to be pick-up-and-play simplistic games that don't bog you down with details.
That's another thing. I like to be able to jump in and out of games for short play times. Most of my gaming time is in small durations. Maybe 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there.

That's hard to do on modern games with long load times, overly complex control schemes and frustrating intro sequences that you pretty much have to sit through otherwise you are even more confused as to WTF is going on.

Course, that is if the 360 or PS3 don't die before the game even starts.

I am a retro gamer because it's what I grew up on.

I fully believe that our teenage years our are most "impressionable" part of our life. For me most of the late 8 bit and all of the 16 bit years was right in that period of time.

That's why I prefer that era of gaming. Sit me down in front of a NES, PCE or Megadrive and a handful of good games and I will play for hours on end.

Stick me in front of a PS3 or 360 and I would be lucky to make it past most games training/intro level.
