10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

If you are comparing the basic flip-up design, then yes they are similar but that is where the similarities end.

Please post this in the correct forum.  Dracula X is NOT on the PC-FX, but on the PC Engine.  Moved topic.

Welcome to the PCE/SuperGrafx General Discussion area of the pcengine-fx.com forums.  Feel free to talk about JPN NEC PC-Engine/SuperGrafx systems and games however you MUST follow these rules:

Expected Behavior
The Pcenginefx NEC Console Community Forums is a place to hold civil discussions about the NEC line of video game consoles. Heated debates on the forums are welcome, as long as they abide by the established guidelines (listed below). If an administrator or moderator sees that a thread or poster violates these guidelines, the thread may be closed or deleted, and posters may be permanently or temporarily banned from the forum no matter how long they may have been a member.

Transactions/Deals/Trade Policy
pcengine-fx.com is not responsible for any transaction, deal, auction or otherwise that is posted on this forum.  Please use common sense when dealing with people - ask for references, a web site, eBay feedback, talk on the phone, etc.  People have been scammed before, and though this is unfortunate, it does occur so deal at your own risk.  If a deal does go bad, pcengine-fx.com can ban the username(s) from this board and spread the word to other related Turbo forums/groups about the user, but this is the extent of pcengine-fx.com's participation in the matter.

Language
Sexual, racial, or ethnic slurs will not be tolerated in any form and are bannable on the first offense.  We also recommend that cursing be held to a minimum, as it does not promote civil conversation.  Foul language in the form of insults directed towards other forum members may result in a ban.
> Example violations (including, but not limited to): Referring Japanese people as "Japs".  If you want to talk about the Japanese, then spell it out completely.

Keep posts on topic
By posting in a thread, you are responsible for keeping the thread on topic.  Any reply to a thread may be deleted at any time, and without notice if it is determined that the reply doesn't contribute to the thread.
> Example violations (including, but not limited to): Replying with an image; replying with the words "me too!" or similar; derailing the thread to a topic not related to the original post.

No warez/ISO/ROM/P2P links
Posting or asking for warez/ISOs/ROMs & P2P links is prohibited on the forums and is grounds for a permanent ban.

Hi alonzomourning23,

You can try to sell it at $70, but IMO it's not worth that much, even unopened.  Go ahead and try it, and if it doesn't sell, then you priced it too high. (maybe have it start at $50, and have your reserve at $70 or so)

Hmm....that's a bad sign.  If nothing happens when you press RUN and the light comes on, then it looks like the motor that spins the CD is broken (in other words, you probably have to get a replacement DUO.)

kenshi:  I know this is late, but did you ever figure out this problem?  Did you post your problem to the Turbo Mailing List?  If anything, someone on there would be able to help you out since you are using a TG-CD (Everybody I know has TurboDuos)...good luck!  Hope you get it fixed!

Hi Calier,

I do not believe you can use the TG-CD with the PC Engine (at least I've not heard of anyone trying it.)  Even so, I would not pay the money to find out...better to stick with PC Engine CD units for PC Engine systems.

EDIT:  It has been verified that the PC Engine CD unit IS compatible with the TG-CD unit.  It's the exact same unit, except for the color...so yes the TG-CD unit will work with the PC Engine.

Hi hyuri0011,

PC Engine games are very hard to make for the average user.  I think the #1 reason is that there isn't a big development community out there for the Turbo/PCE.  There are less than 10 people that I know of that actually know how to code for the TG/PCE, so that right there should tell you how bad it is.  There is a huge lack of online documentation on how to program for the Turbo/PCE so anyone who wants to learn can't without contacting someone how knows.

The Develo CD is a good tool, but if you don't know how to read Japanese, you are pretty much out of luck.

Wow....guess they really never "cleaned up" themselves at all (just the customers)...well forget what I said then :)
#1662
I haven't heard anything about them recently, but I thought they were good to buy from (at least in the past few years.)  Back a few years ago, I think they were under different management or had different staff...needless to say, anyone who bought from them was asking for trouble (a huge story behind that.)  But one day they cleaned up their act and people started buying from them again with no problems.
#1663
Hi,

This isn't a super-active board, so don't expect instant replies.

Anyway, the problem you are experiencing is not common - I've not had this problem with my TE at all.  Maybe you just got a few bad TE/GT's....could be the speaker or the volume control...I'd try different games and batteries just to make sure too.

Hi caldwellpa,

Thanks for the post.  You don't need a 3.0 card to play SCD games on the Turboduo...it has it already built into the unit.

As for great SCD games, well my personal favorites are Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Dungeon Explorer II, Dragon Slayer, Shadow of the Beast & Cotton to name a few...

Hi kempobot,

Yes you can use the JPN Super System Cards in a USA Turbo, HOWEVER, if you want to play Super CDs on your TurboGrafx+CD, you MUST have the Super System Card v3.0 and a JPN-to-USA HuCard converter.

I've already been in contact with Bt about why MindRec.com has been down. He said that the site has been going through some server upgrades, and thus the reason for the downtime. However, he said that it would be down for a short time...I just checked mindrec.com and it is still down (going on 3 weeks now?). If you are looking to purchase IMPLODE, you can still get it (I believe) from Turbo Zone Direct @ www.tzd.com.

Hi Xylob,

You can talk about mostly anything here, but talk about roms and such are not generally accepted (as in, posting links to roms/isos).

As for a good emu, the best one is of course the Magic Engine @ www.magicengine.com.

Neo Nectaris was a JPN only release on the PC Engine...however I thought that the PS version of Nectaris was the port from Neo Nectaris...?

That's a great idea...however making an accurate rarity list is a lot harder than one might think.  Just knowing which games are rare for the PC-FX is hard enough not living in JPN....but for the PCE/TG...I don't even want to touch that!  Anyone else up to the task?

LOL....dude you crack me up on that last question :)   To answer your questions...

1)  Please email me directly about this...

2) No official release date is set..however last I heard it was sometime in July.

3) Yes, I believe 2 or 3 other games will be on the CD.

4) Metal Slug 1 AES JPN version.  Currently at TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!! ...It's pathetic that any game could command such a price (not to mention not worth 2K!)

5) Well, I'd say I'm a "Turbo Shiznit" since I got all of my own shirts and over 500+ originals.  I'm not the prez of MindRec, but pcengine-fx.com is the next best thing :P

Hmm.....that sounds like some problem with the redbook audio.  The circuits inside the DUO that process the audio from the CD to laser to the A/V output jack seem to be going out.  If this is the case (and it really sounds like it) then you will have to send your DUO to someplace to get it repaired.  Retrogames has been around for a long time and I've not heard of any problems with them.

Hi slashhhy, welcome to the boards.  If you can answer my questions below I will have a better idea of what your issue is.

1. How long have you had your DUO-R? (did you buy your DUO-R new or used?)

2. Have you tried other CD games?  Does it restart with every CD game you try to play?

3. Are you using originals of the games or CDRs?

Also, you might want to try to clean the CD lens, but be very careful that you don't scratch the lens.  Air it out, make sure there isn't any build-up of dust, maybe use a lens cleaning brush if you can get one.  Also make sure that the CDs you are using are as scratch-free as possible as the CD unit will fail if it can't read the data in a reasonable amount of time.
