Localization Legend "Supper the Subtitler" has "joined the club" in being targeted for CD-pressings by bootleg master Tobias/PCEWorks! His projects like Private Eyedol, Galaxy Fräulein Yuna 1 & 2, etc. are now being sold on Chinese factory-pressed CDROMs...

Looks good.  No distortion.

Little update, and probably last post in this thread.  I decided to order the white tomee cable (I'm such a cheap-ass).  Got it today, tested out my humble collection of 20-ish games, and everything but KOF 99 works.  No boot disk necessary.  I knew KOF would not work before I tried it.

Thanks for all the help here.

Parasol Stars for me.  Don't get me wrong, it looks great.  I just have never gotten into single screen platformers.  I think it's just a little before my time.  When Super Mario Bros came out, it literally changed the game forever for me.

As far a Ninja Gaiden goes.  I like the PCE and NES versions.  The PCE version does look better, but it's not a graphics leap like the PCE version of Double Dragon II was.  For me, the difference is the music.  The NES version is one of the all time great soundtracks.   Fast and frenzied, it fits the gameplay perfectly.

Quote from: Gypsy on 01/12/2018, 10:34 PMThe Akura can trick games (I didn't have to with Skies) but it's $85. I'll let you know on the cable and test some games that would require tricking.
Awesome... I will be monitoring this thread

I pretty much only use original game discs for Dreamcast now. Anyway it had been a long time so I grabbed the game, it actually does say it is VGA compatible on the back of the US and Japanese cases. Sure enough it does work. I tested with an Akura HDMI box which only outputs to 480p. I have a cable coming (because I want something to easily hook up to a CRT monitor) but it just shipped from Poland today so it will be a bit yet. I can test with it when I get it if you'd like, but I'm sure it will work.

If there are any other games you are curious about just ask me odds are decent I have them.
I am just trying to figure out if most people are using cables or boxes to trick the non-vga games into using vga.  There's a few ways to do this and I just want to know which works at the lowest cost.

Quote from: schweaty on 01/12/2018, 10:58 AMI feel like Im missing something here.  I've seen a couple of posts about most dreamcast games being vga compatible, but when I look on the back of the games I have, it looks like at least half are not.  Huh?
I wonder if this is because most people use CD-rs and at least 95% of games are patched to work with a VGA cable now days.

Also, I have two super generic VGA cables that were maybe $15 each. Never had an issue with either one as far as video quality or buzzing audio is concerned.
Not every piece of supported hardware is mentioned on every game, especially US release. The VGA box was not promoted in any way in the states, I'm not sure if OEM ones ever were sold here. So many games work and they just don't mention it.

From my experience usually the games that don't work or work badly if tricked are 2D or have some 2D aspects to them. I'm not sure why this is but that's what I've noticed. The 2D fighters come to mind but also even some games like Sakura Wars 1 or 2 (one or both of them, I can't remember) have a malfunction or two if played in VGA even if the rest of the game is fine. The other two SW games are native to DC (1 and 2 were ports of SS games) and used no code in common, are largely 3D, and work great in VGA as do many games from my experience and I've played almost nothing but originals.

I would go check Skies of Arcadia right now but my fucking power just went out and it's going to hit 11F tonight so I have to go haul some fucking wood into the house. WeeeeeeehhhAaaaas!
I'm very sure Skies works. I could check Sakura Wars if anyone cares but no one cares. Man, it's been so long since I played through those games.

With the fighters, I know Last Blade 2 doesn't work, as it's one of my favourites and the best I can play it with is svideo.

Another game that didn't work was some derpy ass baseball game that sucked anyway. Most stuff pretty much just works and I've played a shit ton of Dreamcast games.
Are you using a box or cable?  Original discs or patched burns?

Many that don't mention it on the back of the case can be forced into it anyway.
Ok, but can they be forced into it with a boot disk like codebreaker or do you have to have a box with a Hz switch?

I might be in the minority, but i like the new name a little better than the old one.  I also like that it will be an umbrella title for future releases.  More quality homebrew to look forward to.

great thread.  this is off the top.  i will have to look at my wii u and ps4 games and update the post later:

Prince of Persia (TG16-CD) - mea culpa:  i never actually beat it.  i can get all the way to the end but i cant make that last jump into your mirror image.  it surprised me how much fun it was.  pro-tip:  if you havent played this yet, read the manual first.

Firewatch (PS4) - one of my first limited run purchases. great, if short, game.  reminded me of point and click adventure pc games.

Inside (PS4) - everyone should play this game.  that is all.

Zelda Spirit Tracks (DS) - great game.  i liked it better than phantom hourglass.  the issues with the stylus control are completely over exaggerated.  i had no problems

Zelda Breath of the Wild (Wii U) - game of the year for me.  that is all

Until Dawn (PS4) - me and the missus had a lot of fun playing thru this on the couch at night

Captain Toad (Wii U) - really liked this.  captain toad was one of my favorite parts on super mario 3d world.  reminded me of old school single screen puzzle games.  liked it so much i 100%'d it.

Little Nightmares (PS4) - in the same vein as Inside with a little more polish.  play it and thank me later.

Zelda Link to the Past (SNES) - ashamed to admit I had never finished this until this year.  started it many times but never stuck with it to the end.  i guess its been a very zeldy year.

Might and Magic III (TG16-CD) - lot of nostalgia for me on this one.  this was my first PC purchase I ever made when we got our first IBM 386 BITD.  i believe it came on 8 3.5" floppys.  really took my time on this game and loved every minute.  totally underrated game that I cant believe doesnt get more discussion around here.  its got a pretty steep learning curve but if you can get past the initial asskicking, its worth it.  as bithead1000 said, "you spend 9 hours making this party then go out into the field and get killed by the first monster"

currently about half way through Metroid Prime 1 (GC).  probably wont finish it by the end of the year.

EDIT:  how could i forget the delicious dragons curse (yeah, you heard me) remake on ps4?

I'd expect $30-40 for a good one
If its going to be that much i might as well spring for the kuro box.

Anybody have any experience with the hong kong vga boxes that cost about $40?

I recall with one of those I had to press it in the DC's port pretty hard for a good connection.

Didn't have the problems you describe, though. Which one did you get, this one?

Gents,

My 1st generation pioneer plasma has an 15-pin vga input labelled 'analog rgb' as a pc connection.  My question is, can i connect my dreamcast with a vga cable to this input?

I cant find much tech data on the pioneer tv.  I basically just need to know if tv manufacturers considered vga an analog rgb connection.  I know it isnt really, but that doesnt mean it wont work on this tv.  I just dont want to buy a decent dreamcast vga cable and not have it work

Gents,

I recently did the FM sound mod to my SMS and i am picking up compatible games.  I have a few but would like to add the following:

Cloud Master
Penguin Land
Shinobi
Fantasy Zone II

Looking for the case and manual for Rampage

PAL games:
Lucky Dime Caper (not an FM game, but i just want it)

I would like them with case and manual, but i need at least the case.

As far as pricing, my usual rule if thumb is to pay average ebay prices minus 10 percent and a small discount for multiple games.  I will pay via paypal as a gift.

by generation:

1.  intellivision - this is what we had as a kid.  never had a 2600, but the intellivision kicks the shit out of it so no loss there
2.  NES
3.  Turbo
4.  PC  (my gpa in college wouldve been a half a grade higher if blizzard never existed)
5.  GC  (still holds up)
6.  360
7.  PS4

i picked up a nomad off of craigslist and did the tft lcd screen mod.  i also figured out a much easier way to wire it in than all the tutorials online.  had to use the flash because the screen was so bright that was all you could see in the pic.

Quote from: Waverider on 10/23/2017, 07:07 PMI'll send the boxed one in to have the caps replaced after the other one done. I'll just leave a note to be careful with the box.
Um, just a thought but take the Duo OUT OF THE BOX before sending it to be fixed? It'll save on shipping and you'll know no harm will come to your cardboard.

As for being sealed, isn't the US Duo box just a flap or did the retailer put a sticker over the opening? I could swear, when working Babbages, we manually opened the box to put in the bonus bundle game we had in stock before we put the sleeve around it (when they started the $299 promotion). But that was many beers ago...
Agreed.  Take it out of the box for shipping.  You're just asking for that box to get eff'ed up in shipping.  The shipping will probably be a little less as well in a smaller box.

Just wanted to add:  any perceived "value" lost by un-sealing the box will be made up for value gained by having a re-capped unit.  More importantly, you will also be preserving a working console for the future.

The 3ds version of ocarina of time is perfect example of how to do it.  It's a complete remake graphics-wise but retains all the same gameplay.  The kind of update that makes a somewhat dated looking game fit right into today almost 20 years later

This is just based on memory from a little over 3 years ago, but I believe the NEC computer CDROMs do not work with the pc engine or Turbo CD dock.  They look very similar, but they aren't exactly the same thing.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 08/01/2017, 09:44 PMTime Gal and Road Buster are a load of fun. I *do* like LD games, the problem is that none of the Bluth ones made it. Also, those two games and an LA will cost you like $3000 which is fucking crazy. I could own a couple of LD arcade machines for that.

I called Triad Stone Powerstone again. I think anyone who has played it can forgive me though :)
I saw about a year ago.  Someone made a time gal cabinet with side art and a marquee.  Inside it was a LA with the disc.  I think the same guy also made a don Quixote as well

I am almost certian this was a scam listing

It was relisted at $375.00 5 days later on 7/30
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-CLD-A100-Sega-Genesis-SegaCD-Laserdisc-Combo-/122618962901?

Relisted again the next day for $365.00 and was ended early because "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."
http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/122625368997?
This listing was kind of strange.  It started at $395 then a couple days later it was lowered to $300.  That's when I posted it here.  A day later I saw the new listing with the same pic

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!

got the game in the mail yesterday and immediately went to work.  here's what i received.  lots of corrosion like in the original post.
IMG
i always pop in a game just to see what's wrong with it before i do anything to it.  in this case, it was as advertised:  solid color screen of death.  my go-to move is to hit the pins with a plastic eraser.  i figured it was the quickest solution and at least worth a shot.  the eraser had minimal effect and the result was predictable:  solid color screen of death.  i was all out of brasso and counter-top cleaner so i moved on to what i thought was my last best hope.  i soaked the pins in white vinegar for a few hours, dried it off and hit it with the plastic eraser to remove any remaining corrosion.  i let it sit overnight to make sure it was dry before i put any electric current through it.  here's what it looked like when i was done:

and here is the result:
