10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: guest on 09/23/2010, 10:17 AMThat artwork looks so damn sexy; I can't wait for Xymati's release!  Two player shmup.... fappitty-fap-fap.

P.S. - There's a typo on the case liner; hoardes should be hordes, as in "Tatsujin hoardes hordes of system cards".  :D
Thanks for the typo spot, Necro!  :)  I'll fix it when i get my computer set up.

As for releasing it on XNA before the PCE, that's a decision that Bt has made that I happen to agree with... It will be released to a wider audience, have more playtesters in the alpha stage, and be generally more lucrative.  Due to lack of interest/time from PCE coders (not just Bt), it makes more sense to go this route.  After all, I'd rather see the game released in some form on some kind of platform, than wait around indefinitely for whichever PCE programmer to free up some time to get something rolling on the PCE front.  Once the XNA release is done, if a PCE programmer wants to step up to the plate and code the game for the Super CD-ROM2, then I'll be all for it.  That's why i'm going to continue to draw the rest of the graphics for Xymati (and PC-Gunjin for that matter) with PCE limatations in full effect (9-bit color, single bg layer, sprite/tile limits, etc.)

Some news regarding this project.  Xymati development will pick back up after the holidays when Bt has some free time.  Catch is, that the intial release of the game will likely come on Windows/XBLA and then on the PCE at a later time.  The game will still be drawn with PCE limitations in mind, so the PCE port of the game should be somewhat easy when the time comes to do it.  Also, I'd like to finally reveal the manual cover and traycard art i drew up quite some time ago... these will likely be the manual/traycard art for the PCE release, as well as any other releases of the game.  These images are quite large.  Hope you all enjoy them.  :)

They already made a Pac-Man style game on the PC-Engine... it's called 'Batman'  :|

Here's a little medley of some of the Xymati tracks, in their current respective states, that will be in the game.  The first sample is the title screen track and the last is the enter initials track.  all the samples in between are from various stages.  For your listening pleasure....

Quote from: guest on 06/29/2009, 10:57 PMIf you guys manage to complete the upgraded rom, I hope that you'll also improve the palettes for sprites like alternate Dhalsim & alternate Vega and touch up the few imperfections (like alternate Saggat's shorts).
Oh?  Please elaborate on these sprite/color issues.  I'd be happy to do some tweaking anywhere it's necessary.

Touching on SF2:CE thing again.  It wasn't completely a joke.  Tomaitheous and I have been tinkering with the PCE version of SF2:CE off and on for the past year or so.  While translating the endings, win phrases, and switching the boss names to their US names is on the agenda I have taken the liberty of also touching up a few of the stages i felt could use some work.  I was never really happy with the way the Ryu, Guile, and Vega/M.Bison stages looked on the PCE version as well as a couple others.  Oh yea, the title screen will indeed be changed to 'Fighting Street II' Champion Edition'.  Had to do it  ;)  Here are some shots of the newer touched up stages next to the original PCE stages.  original ones are on the left, touched up screens are on the right...

Yea... I'll go ahead and "leak" the end credits track because I know Louis doesn't mind sharing his stuff.  It's a pretty brilliant track, as the rest of the OST will be.  It's up to Nate if he wants to leak any snippets of the rest of the OST.   Enjoy!  :)

Quote from: nat on 06/15/2009, 09:39 PMI hope the music has a more arcade feel to it that compliments the gameplay style, as opposed to the ambient techno/trance music in Implode and Meteor Blaster. Don't get me wrong; that kind of music goes really well with Implode, but it wasn't as effective in Meteor Blaster and I think it would definitely be unfitting for Xymati. Just my opinion.
I can assure you there will be no eurotrance/techno.  Nate McClain, of Vodkatron, is creating a soundtrack for Xymati that I can only describe as something like Gate Of Thunder meets Border Down... like if Syn Sound Design teamed up with Yasuhisa Watanabe and made some fast paced arcade shoot 'em up music.  There will be wailing guitar, there will be crazy spaced out synth, there will be kicking drumbeats and overtones of heorism, dread, and sinister intentions.

Dungeon Explorer?

It's hard to overhype a game that is quite possibly the best platformer on its respective system and likely the best Castlevania game of the 16-bit era (and in some people's opinion the best CV game ever - I dunno about that).  The graphics are top notch, they pull off just about every known hardware trick they could get away with, the soundtrack is legendary, the level design is fluid and varied, the control is tight and responsive and the overall presentation is really kind of awe inspiring.  It deserves the hype.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 04/07/2009, 12:41 PMFirst off, those pics of Afterburner look FAR too dim.  They look much brighter on a real TV so I don't think that is a good way to display them.
Welp, it's about as good as you're going to get with trying to fake aspect corrected NTSC scanlined screenshots on a computer screen.  Emulators basically do the same thing.  they blur/interpolate the screen, sometimes add the NTSC artifacting, then they just add in a black line every other line with a preset transparency and then some emulators adjust the final brightness/gamme up a little bit.  That's basically what I've done with the Afterburner images.
#664
No clue about that.  Maybe there's a broken router between mindrec.com and your machine somewhere.  Maybe you could try a tracert.exe or something?
#665
the ".../~fragmare/" directory on mindrec.com is private and not accessible to the public.  I can, however, link to individual files within that directory at my whim.

I think the best way to compare PC-Engine screenshots to Genesis screenshots is to adjust them to appear as they would on a normal NTSC/PAL TV screen in 4:3 ratio, scanlines, etc.  I've made an example out of a couple of screenshots i took of Afterburner II from each system below...

mindrec.com/~fragmare/ab2_pce_tv01.png  <- PC-Engine
mindrec.com/~fragmare/ab2_gen_tv01.png  <- Genesis

Here are a couple more images I've been working on recently for some of the lv.4 background scenery.  In level 4 you pass through the outer solar system en route to the enemy's forward operating base on Pluto.

er, i think that's what i'm currently using.  beats the pants off of Photoshop's messy rotation.  it's simply called something like rot.exe.

I look forward to playing both Xymati and PC-Gunjin. They really do look awesome.
Any chance of releasing a demo or gameplay video?
Yes.  Both games will have a one level demo released prior to their actual release.  The demo will be in standard .PCE ROM format.

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 01/05/2007, 08:25 AMIn the future,if we have such advanced technology I sure hope we will still have cars, driveways, and possibly roads to use the cars on still to get to these houses out in the middle of nowhere. Friendly advice you probably wont take, the landscape needs more detail, esp if your goal is to copy the detailed glory that is Raiden.
There exists a concept in life called W.I.P.  It stands for Work In Progress.  This game is a work in progress.  There will indeed be roads and cars in the final version of this level.  In fact, there will be an entire city preceeding this countryside with numerous roads, cars, buildings, parking lots, sidewalks, billboards, malls, etc.  I'm currently in the process of finishing up background tiles for this level.  BTW, I don't remember seeing driveways in Raiden.  Also, why do you continue to fish for an argument?  Is there something psychologically wrong with you that you feel you have to try to debunk or negatively respond to anyone who has confronted you in any way?  A very sad state of affairs...

I haven't been around in while, I'm way too tired to read. I just skim thru the this thread, Mike taking decade old reviews personal and they were biased and off the mark. Blah blah blah... Who cares. Bloody Wolf can only be outdone by Ikari Warriors.

Fragmare, where can I find this game btw? is this on the pce?

-
It's Xymati, the PC-Engine vertical shooter currently being developed by MindRec alongside PC-Gunjin.  As our good friend Mikey ever so eloquently pointed out, it clearly draws inspiration from old shooters like Raiden, Star Soldier series, Blazing Lazers, Vapor Trail and even the DonPachi series.

Quote from: fragmareThere's a reason PC-Engine developers tend to avoid these forums.  It's because people like you make these forums the gamefaqs.com of the PC-Engine world.
but then you say I'm the minority. If I was the minority then you'd come around more Id think,so which is it?

Also,I said your game looked like it was copying Raiden, and the laser and ripple from Konami games, I didn't say it was doing it well however. That remains to be seen untill the game is in motion.
I stand by my previous statement.  :)

Quote from: PCEngineHell on 01/04/2007, 11:29 PMYea,troll like coming from someone who just joined to comment to me and hopefully start shit, lol reminds me of the moose and the worm.

I'm finding it strikingly odd how noobs are appearing as of past couple of days and seeming to dictate how the threads and peoples post here should be done/run,then running off to never be heard from again. I thought this qualifies more as trolling.
Actually, I was directed here by another forum member who alerted me to your troglodytic antics.  Again I find it all quite amusing.  There's a reason PC-Engine developers tend to avoid these forums.  It's because people like you make these forums the gamefaqs.com of the PC-Engine world.  I usually avoid trifling little pissing contests such as you seem to have stirred up here, but i felt it was so hilarious that i could not resist.  Like I said before, everyone is entitled to their opinions.  However, your opinions are certainly in the minority here, and it must be screamingly apparent to you by now.  I'm just trying to somehow make you understand that with each ranting, blithering, grammar error laden post you make, you further cement your position in the minds of the other legitimate forum goers here as a complete fool.  Not name calling, just trying to make you aware of what you're doing to yourself.

Yea Zanac mixed with Raiden and whatever else you plan to copy :P

After all last I remember ripple and laser belonged to Gradius and Salamander. Im sure you can verify this as BT Garner probably knows all about both games
Hey, if I'm successfully emulating the graphical styles of games like Raiden, Gradius, and Salamander, that means I'm doing things right.  ;)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about how something looks.  It's subjective, not objective.  It is simply the nature of the beast.  If you disagree about opinions that someone had about how they perceived something 10+ years ago, that is fine. By all means voice your own opinion... but please don't make a federal case out of it and then resort to petty namecalling.  It makes you seem very troll-like.  Just some advice for future posts.

I find this all quite amusing.  NES graphics on PC-Gunjin???  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
