Does the game keep loading from the CD? If not then why not just put another game disc or CD in the TG16 or pc engine CD player and hit the play button. Or better yet. Hit play on the disc that is already inserted for music.

I just answered my own question. No audio pass through from the CD audio while the game is in play. doesn't work.
#202
Is it just another caravan shooter or a complete game?

Quote from: Keith Courage on 12/10/2017, 11:06 PMI wonder how they got around the legality of being able to include the CD ROM bios files?
You put it on your SD card and choose it from the menu.  I recommend watching that lengthy video that was linked to on the neogeo forum.
Well on the back of the box it says (Built-in System cards for CD-rom2, Super CD-rom2, and Arcade CD rom2). Well at least the ad of the box. Who knows what it will say on the real thing.

Built-in doesn't mean downloading the CD bios yourself. Maybe they just messed up on the ad.

This picture also claims a Built in Arcade card.

Sweet looking device nevertheless.

Just thought I'd post a pic of my latest cleaned/re-whitened system to entice anyone else who may be interested. CD drive has new gearing as well as having other general maintenance done. Upgraded S-video port installed as well. This particular setup is already spoken for but I have more on hand. I'm about a week and a half backed up on getting more of these ready. I have some DUOs on hand as well.

Quote from: Flare65 on 12/10/2017, 06:07 PMDumb question...

How would I go converting my SCD/CD games to some sort of file to place on the memory card for this thing?
I was kind of wondering what type of file format it used for this as well. It's got to be something that isn't too uncommon though. Otherwise people would have too many issues getting it to work.
#207
interesting peace of hardware. Too expensive for me to validate getting one. Maybe when the price drops.

Has anyone seen this? https://starforcepi.wordpress.com/2017/04/19/the-pc-engine-sd/ Don't think it does CD games though.
#208
I've used the method mentioned in the NES controller modification to make all different kinds of joysticks work with a PC engine. shouldn't be too difficult to go that route or just take the innards out of a PC engine controller like you mentioned.
#209
This is awesome! You and your translation team are awesome! Now I can play this game to find out if it is also awesome!

Ugh, no fun working around the gamedoctorHK region mod.

Anyways, there could be a number of reasons why you have no audio. However, being that you have no audio at all I would check the 4558 op amp just to the right of the AV jack. Lots of times old cap goo can get underneath these and short things out. The contacts can also corrode. 95% of the time the op amp can be removed, contacts cleaned, then re-soldered and all is good again. In some cases new leads/wires have to be soldered in to fix corroded contacts on the board and in more rare cases the op amp has to be replaced. Also, check that the op amp is getting around 3.8V from the 22UF next to it.
#211
Check to make sure that the little grounding strip on the lens ribbon cable isn't touching the motherboard. I've seen many cases where that strip will touch the motherboard and short things out causing CD read issues.

In all honesty that grounding strip is not required. You can just remove it along with the black wire that's attached to it with no ill effects.
#212
if it works then keep using it. I couldn't see it causing any harm. it could simply be that maybe a few of your pins were dirty and reinserting it made a better connection on the card slot pins.
#213
I've come across many V2 everdrives that don't work well with a core grafx or pc engine regardless of it being a V2 V2.1 V2.2 etc... Not sure what the issue is. Kind of aggravating since the original V1 everdrive would work without any issues. Seems to be luck of the draw if you get one that works well with one or not.

Generally Tg16, DUO, and DUO-R/RX systems work fine. Must have something to do with the extra long ribbon cable for the card slot found inside a pc engine or core grafx is my guess.
#214
I'll enter, if I win I will give these to my dad because he's a crazy Big Star Trek fan.
#215
I'll say what no one else will.

If you really want a pressed disc, maybe get the pce works English version for much less than the original from Tobias.

not saying I agree with the practice. Just saying it's an option.
#216
All I've mainly seen is people doing new screen mods for these but in my opinion it's not really worth it unless the original screen is no good.

These make great replacement jacks for the LT systems https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-10pcs-DC-Power-Jack-Socket-DC-002-1-3-x-3-5-mm-Black-3-5-1-3MM/322162741242?hash=item4b02654ffa:g:hHYAAOSwepJXaWDR
#217
The original AC is crappy poo poo. It ruins the AC adapter port in these systems because the tip is slightly larger than it is supposed to be. Makes everything all loose which usually makes it necessary to have the AC jack replaced at some point. Whenever I replace the AC jack in these for a customer I tell them not to use the original power supply anymore.

Basically anything from 7V-9V 1A(1000ma)with the correct tip size(1.35mm) will work. These work great but the cable length is a bit short. https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-7-5V-1A-Power-Supply-Adapter-Mains-wall-charger-3-5mmx1-35mm/172565129472?hash=item282daee900:g:fkoAAOxy5QtSBhD6

I'd try another AC adapter first but you might end up having to have the input jack replaced.
#218
These look great. Too bad I rarely have time to take on screen upgrades anymore.
#219
Weird, I've only come across that when a controllers wiring was done wrong(cable replaced) but You've tested other controllers so I am at a loss.
#220
Great video, makes me miss my original dynastic hero that I sold like a dummy when I was in my early 20s.

Awww, who am I kidding. If I still owned dynastic hero I would sell it because I can't in my right mind own a game that's worth what it demands now days. I'd forever be worried about scratching the case or CD to where I would never touch the game and then it would just sit there never being played. So probably good I don't have it anymore. lol
#221
Usually this is caused by bad traces in the controller port area. Have you checked the traces for the ports pins using a multi-meter?
#222
I've just gotten used to the idea that we will most likely never see anymore CD game translations because of Tobias stealing translations. It sucks, but it is what it is. Doubt he will stop anytime soon unless there is some legal recourse that can be taken. I'm perfectly fine with him making and selling repros to whoever may want them but steeling translated works for money is just downright wrong.

I wonder if we will not be seeing future translated HU card games as well because of the repro Hu cards some other people are making now. I've seen a few translated ones floating around.
#223
I recently received this with some other Turbo Games I wanted but I already have this one. So here it is for sale.

Cosmetically the game itself looks good with just a couple minor scratches on it. The case is good other than the case label looks like it is missing a very small portion off of the top like it was stuck on there a little too high and someone then just cut the top off to compensate. The manual has a few wrinkles and creases but no tears. However some of the pages are yellowing.

Blowing out the fuse is usually a leaky capacitor. Almost always the 1000uf cap. Did you change them yet?
#225
I just worked on a coregrafx with a RGB mod and swapping out C120 for a 4.7uf cap made the biggest difference for me. Every possible combination of two caps didn't make a difference until I got the C120.
#226
Yeah, lots of auctions for games are going for a little less than usual now. This is good because the market should drop a little for certain games. Then again, I've also noticed that certain auctions that end at a lower then normal price typically end at odd times of the day.

No idea why Diamond Mine has never received a console port or conversion of any sort. Such a great game. Drol and Aztek also seem like games that should have had a console port.

because a "walk" button doesn't sound edgy enough.

Most likely there are some bad traces on the board in the audio section or old cap goop causing a short somewhere. The majority of the time when people do recaps they do not clean or address this when they should. However, this is also something that can sometimes happen no matter how well things are cleaned up prior. It's going to be difficult to fix the problem on your own unless you are good at soldering and using a multi-meter.

Small chance your AV cable or AV jack is the problem since the headphone jack doesn't work either.

I do these repairs as well as others here(thesteve, turbokon, MobiusStripTech, MNKyDeth). Feel free to message me if you would like to ship it off for repair.
#232
Maybe, but that could also be the sign of a dirty lens(clean with qtip and rubbing alcohol) or the drive might need some minor potentiometer adjustments.

With this in mind though if it only happens once in a while I'd leave it alone.
#233
This is the center gear for the lens going bad. If you let it sit a few days the gear will get stuck again. Lubrication does nothing. The reason for this is the center hole for said gear swells making it too tight to move freely over time. You could drill it out and make it larger but that typically only delays the inevitable(gear crumbling apart into tinny pieces). https://console5.com/store/turbografx-cd-rom-pc-engine-cd-rom2-replacement-middle-gear.html
#234
I would only keep the other one sealed if you are thinking about selling it. if you plan on keeping it yourself forever then definitely open it and get it recapped.
#235
I do have a few left but unfortunately no more manuals to accompany them.

I was so excited when I saw this but... it's the snes version not pce. I guess cool though nevertheless.
#237
You are burning an ISO? Most games do not come as just an ISO. Normally there is a .cue file or something along those lines that is needed to make a correct burn.

You can test that the CD drive works correctly using a regular audio CD as well.
#238
I like to put a little rubbing alcohol on one end of the Q-tip. Gently wipe off the lens with the rubbing alcohol end of the q tip and then wipe it back off with the dry end afterwards.

I have one if you're still looking.

The symptom you are having could also be a lens motor going bad. When they start to die they will sometimes get stuck when traveling back and forth. When they get stuck the CD spins up really fast. So this might be the problem altogether. You should try some more games to find out if the CD only spins up when loading in between stages or different screens of a CD game. This can also happen when loading up a game from a cold start as well. Basically you should listen to hear if the lens motor runs and then see if the CD just spins up really quick like. So I would do a little more testing first before trying to adjust potentiometers.

Now if the CD spins up really fast immediately with no lens motor sound then probably move onto pot adjustment.

The only two pots that could help your situation would be the V102 or the V103. This are located on the mother just below the CD drive assembly. I would start with V102. Simply turn it slightly counter clockwise a little and see if things improve. If they do not then try going to other direction a little. If neither help then put it back where it was to start with and then try the same with the V103.

Also, you probably already tried this but you might want to try cleaning off your lens with a q-tip.

If at any point this gets annoying and you would rather send it to me instead of messing with it just let me know.

Quote from: GoldenWheels on 10/15/2017, 11:30 AMCrap! Thanks guys. Recaps already done (I bought this from Keith recapped, LOL) so I guess I'll just see how the CDs play for a while. It's a very inconsistent problem right now.

Part of me wishes it would just shit the bed so I could send it out (Keith you do new lasers?) because not knowing if I'm going to get screwed progress-wise mid game on a load screen really sucks. ALmost makes me want to stick to hueys ANYWAY.
I do replace the lens with a new one if it's bad. I can't remember when you got the system from me but I'm sure I thoroughly tested it and all was working great at the time. you are always welcome to send the system back to me so I can adjust the lens or replace it.

also, has anything changed with where you use your system location wise? the reason I ask is because sometimes Duo CD drives can act funny when placed next to other CD drives.
#242
You could get one of these regular pce pad cables and change the wire order to work with a tap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-Controller-Pad-replacement-cable-9-pin-control-Wire-Game-Joypad-/222505996651?hash=item33ce64116b:g:zc8AAOSwfRdZEoJi

A guide to make the cable work with a tap can be found here http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/2009/07/tech-doc-turbotap-cable.html

I like doing this because it makes the tap cable longer.
#243
Might be a bad gear but no way to know without opening up the system. Also, it could be that the lens might just need a minor adjustment. This sounds like something that could be fixed by slightly turning the V102 pot counter clockwise. I would just barely turn it to the left. Not much at all.

Could be a sign that the lens is starting to go out but unfortunately only time will tell for that. No way to really test it if it's still technically working.

There is an ebay seller from poland who has good quality mega drive 2 cables. I got one for a customer once. Worked great with no noticeable audio hum. These are good http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Mega-drive-Megadrive-II-2-Genesis-II-2-RGB-SCART-EURO-Cable-/172883278035?hash=item2840a578d3:g:RhkAAOSwxp9W9C-1

The bit need for a US DUO,Turbo grafx, core grafx, and pc engine is a 4.5mm security bit. A Japanese PC engine DUO, DUO-R/RX, and super CD-rom 2 drives use a t10 torx bit.

I've used size #4 3/4 inch in length wood screws to replace any of them with great results. They are slightly longer then the original but this is good for any that have stripped out holes.

Just buy an old sony discman. Luckily they can still be found for around $20-$25 working on ebay still. make sure to get a working one.

The two pics you posted , the first one is showing the pins of the chip that needed to be lifted and they all
need to be grounded to same wire?

And what's the second pic for?

if this is the sound I am thinking of then it can be fixed with potentiometer adjustment.

when looking at the potentiometers on the CD drive you will see a spot where there are two black potentiometers right next to one another and two white potentiometers next to one another. try turning the black potentiometer that is next to the white potentiometers counterclockwise slightly.
#249
Is it a really really fast rhythmic sound almost like the sound is sputtering rapid fire like? Or does it almost sound like a scraping sound coming out of the speakers?

And yes a Kss-225a will work. Just might take a few tries to line up the larger of the lens ribbon cables correctly because it is slightly smaller in width.
#250
I'm just saying that if those headphone jacks get heated up in any way that one or both of the contacts that make the connection to the headphones moves out of place internally. To test this you can use a 3.5mm plug to bare wires and then use a multi-meter  to see if both sounds channels have a connection.
