Quote from: technozombie on 10/06/2016, 07:53 AMIs Traysia any good? I always heard it kinda sucked and I avoided it.
I thought Traysia was a fun game.  It felt very Ultima like, as opposed to being JRPGlike.

The presentation and style is basically Ultima 3 for the most part.

Worth playing, I think.

There are some catchy tunes too.

It's actually a pretty nice soundtrack that's rarely talked about.
battle tune is pretty great.

so is the title, and many other tunes.

Underrated as hell, to me.

Super Hydlide is also a good game to play, but it's kind of goony.  It's originally a PC98/MSX game.

I love that game.
I watched a little bit of gameplay on youtube and it seems ok. One of the reasons I was asking is because a store near me was asking around $50 for it. I think the cost has mainly to do with the fact it is a Rennovation release.
It's really weird how Renovation has gotten it's own little cult around the games they brought out for the Genesis.  Even that Tennis game is worth money since it was brought out by them!
Yeah, it's definitely something I don't get.

Gate of Thunder is probably my most favorite shooter, although i haven't played Soldier Blade.

I would tend to agree that if you were trying to "sell" someone on a console it's best to go on the merits of its original and invidual games. Using the "me too" approach so sells people on the TG16/PCE is a bit like the ranger rover evoque clone from China. It will never be the reall thing. The difference is that the PCE is the real thing and did it first. Hopefully my point is clear, it's a pain typing on my phone.

That being said, it is nice to have a list of comparative games.

General Gaming / Re: Nintendo NX Thread
10/10/2016, 07:53 AM
IMO if Nintendo produces a hand held using an Intel Atom chip like those used in some tablets and smartphones and allows it to be docked into a thunderbolt 3.0 station that is connected to a TV and is equiped with an Nvidia GTX 1050/1060 it will be amazing. This would allow them to utilize x86 architecture and make it easier for developers to port games from PS4 and Xbone while also allowing for a console handheld hybrid of competing performance to the previously mentioned. Nintendo won't do that though, because it makes too much sense.

Quote from: seieienbu on 10/08/2016, 02:36 PMSeriously, this looks like the best Castlevania game that never was.
But *WHERE* are the MODE7 chandeliers?!?!?!?

:)

DISCLAIMER: I actually like the SNES/SFC installments, so don't harass me. :)
I played through Rondo of Blood and Super Castlevania for the first time last year. As someone who looks back at each game without nostalgia glasses, Rondo of Blood is the superior game.

Back on topic: Going around showing a playable demo is a hell of a lot better than how most kickstarters....ummmm.....kick off. They had a working game BEFORE they started asking for money.

The Playbasic is ok so far, ive started on my pong game and have both "paddles" on screen and controllable. I just need to implement a ball and I guess edge/ boundary detection. I'm working for the next 7 days so I won't ger much done.

Yep.
BT with the perfect breakdown.

I'm in the same boat. I've wanted to play Snatcher since I first seen pics of it in magazines back in the day. I have recently been contemplating burning a copy of it because I'll never buy one.

It would be nice to play CT with the cut scenes without haveing to deal with the load times of the Psx version. I'm still holding out hope that a prototype of Secret of Mana for the SNES CD pops up and can be converted to run on the MSU-1
#114
I downloaded an MSU-1 hack for X a while back, it was pretty cool. The MSU-1 hack for Zelda:LttP is pretty cool it even adds animated cutscenes.
#115
I installed that PlayBasic and I'm working through a tutorial. We'll see what happens.

You know I have an IRL friend who reminds me of Joe and Nightwolve. He sort of looks like Joe and has similar mannerisms, but politically he aligns perfectly with Nightwolve. Sorry, to detract from this fun discourse, but I've wanted to say that for awhile.
#117
The best way to deal with detractors is keep quiet and make a badass game.  The last Kickstarter update email showing the new background looks awesome, and the music is perfect. This game is shaping up quite well and if this level of quality is maintained it will get noticed. Keep up the good work.

Quote from: elmer on 09/29/2016, 10:48 PMThe whole pixel-art aspect can wait until you get a little further down the path!

The classic starting-point is to recreate the old Atari "pong" game.

You can break it down into a number of steps ...

  • get a 1-pixel ball moving from the top-right of the screen to the middle-left of the screen
  • reset the position of the ball back to the top-right when it goes off the screen
  • add a "bat" on the left hand side of the screen, and bounce the ball off it when it reaches that point
  • allow a joystick to move the bat up-and-down under human control
  • get the ball to figure out whether it hits the bat (or not) when it gets to the left side of the screen
  • ... ... ... and then there's more when you get all of that working!

You could either do that in BASIC on a Commodore 64 (or an emulation of one), or in GameBASIC on a PC, or in HuC on the PCE (probably the hardest to do, but the one where you'll get the most help from other folks here).

Does that make any sense?
This is what I'm looking for, some objectives to work on. I'm working the graveyard shift right now, but I'll try to start on this when I wake up tomorrow.
#125
Well i definitely wouldn't mind learning to make simple games. Actually, my son likes to do some pixel art, and I would like use his art in a game as well as be able to teach him how to do it.

As far as why I have interest in learning, it's really because I like challenging myself with new things. I recently tiled in a shower in one of my bathrooms, it was a difficult, but rewarding experience. Like any kid who grew up with a Nintendo, I've pretty much always wanted to make my own game.
#126
I thought C++ would probably be the best way to go, but I'm open to other ideas.
#127
Quote from: hoobs88 on 09/29/2016, 01:35 PMI don't remember the box art looking like that for Metroid. Is that a reproduction box?
Although a cool box, it definitely isn't the original. The real one is silver and matches the cartride and manaual.
#128
So, like many people I've always want to learn to program/code, but have never really pursued it. I did take a beginners C++ class, and that is the extent of my experience. I've tried to watch Youtube videos, but I usually run into one of two scenarios. Number one: the beginner videos are for the absolute beginner and I get bored and distracted because I already know some of the stuff. Number two: most of the videos are in the format of "here type this,' and you are just following along trying to alt tab and type what they type.  I know there are several people on this site who program and I was hoping someone could issue me a series of challenges that increase in difficulty and complexity.

For example: Some experienced person says "Make a program that does 'X' thing" and then I go research on the internet and figure out how to do it, come back here with the source code, and proceed to the next challenge.

Also, if anyone else on the site is interested in participating in these proposed challenges then they are more than welcome. As a matter of fact if anyone has any good ideas on how to learn to code or even how to keep oneself focused on task/hobby/learning goal, then feel free to add that here. I get distracted easy, even when playing games I tend to play 4 or 5 in short bursts and seldom complete anything.
#129
QuoteIf a game is good, it's quality should speak for itself. People will hear about it, and they will buy it. (hopefully)
As much as I'd like for this to be true, it just isn't. The TG16 being a prime example. Just look at the countless "hidden gem" videos on youtube. Way too often good games aren't hits because of lack of proper promotion.

Quote from: fsa on 09/27/2016, 12:30 PMI went to a Video Game swap recently and anything to do with the TurboGrafx-16 is way overpriced, one person was selling a complete copy of KC for $20.00. Those re-sellers are driving up the prices for all retro games.
Blaming resellers for high prices is like blaming McDonald's for fat people or drug dealers for drugs. People need to learn how to take some fucking personal responsibility.
This is not quite a 1:1 comparison. I have gone to flea markets and personally experienced sellers going around buying up games for cheap from other vendors and then trying to sell them to me for profit. Resellers/flippers(dedicated to extracting as much profit from a game as possible) are very unnecessary middle men.

A more appropriate comparison would be the eyeware industry.

Coming right off Final Fantasy 6 and playing Chrono Trigger as a kid I was underwhelmed. That's probably not a popular opinion though. Tecmo: Secret of the Stars is a graphically underwhelming game considering it came out the same year as Chrono Trigger.
#133
Congrats on reaching the kickstarter goal. I cant wait to get my copy.
#134
Yeah, I was thinking it looked cheesey too.
#135
I said screw it and went ahead and ordered some Genesis cables. I'm tired of not being able to play.
#137
In this hypothetical scenario the Saturn wouldn't have existed and therefore, could not be missed.

The idea I'm referring to was that of a 32bit addon, not SoA developing it's own 32bit system and SoJ doing its own. That was obviously a bad idea.

To clarify, if Sega had released the 32x and the Sega-Trio(Gen,Cd,32X in one) then put all of its software development and marketing skills behind it, it would have been a great "mid-gen" system much like the PCE bridged the gap between the 8bit and 16bit era.
#138
I honestly don't think the 32x was a horrible idea, just a terribly, terribly executed one. If it had released along side a "Neptune," and Sega never created the Saturn thereby, putting their full development resources behide it, it would have been great.
#139
I ordered a cheap scart switch from Amazon once. If, for example, i turned on my Genesis the power light on the SNES would come on. So I ended up having to switch cables anyway. Since then I modded the Snes for component output and I'm contemplating getting some Retrovision cables for my Genesis. I do wished I had a PVM, although I never seen one in person.

Quote from: elmer on 09/15/2016, 02:09 AMIt's been a long time since I updated this thread, but I'm glad to say that I'm finally playtesting Xanadu 2 and finally getting to see and enjoy the differences between Xanadu 1 and Xanadu 2.

Of course, it's also and opportunity to help find and fix the (hopefully few) bugs in my translation coding, and in SamIAm's actual translation.

So far, the game is beautiful ... but it's pointing out a few areas that I put-off polishing, or even really looking at too deeply

Xanadu 1 is a massively-complex game, but it runs through a fairly straight-forward game engine.

In Xanadu 2, Falcom took the opportunity to refine and tweak a whole bunch of things.

That makes the game look and play a lot more "polished" than Xanadu 1 ... but it also means that there are a lot more "edge" cases and one-time-use code that needs to be fixed.

When playing yesterday, I found the first "big" screw-up in the translation.

I was playing, and moved to a different area and suddenly this text box popped-up that was full of garbage characters.

IMG

Well, after hours of tracking down, it turned out to be the "You've played for an hour, now take a break." message.

But that message is a part of the Game Code overlay ... and that overlay is full, so there's no room left to fix things.

What followed is the entire day spent reorganizing memory and testing the results in order to free up enough space to put in the proper message in the proper place.

While I was at it, it annoyed me that that message was displayed in white (actor speech color) text instead of cyan (game narration color) text, and so I tried to fix that at the same time.

Here's the result ...

IMG

Now ... I really need to get rid of that annoying half-space before the flashing cursor ... but perhaps I can put that off for another few days.

Tomorrow it's back to playing the game again!
Today I learned my mom has something in common with Japanese game developers. I never listened to her and took breaks, and I sure as hell am not putting this game down when I get my dirty paws on it.

Quote from: technozombie on 09/13/2016, 04:17 PMWhy does the internet have such a hard-on for the Dreamcast? I love the system, i've had mine since the month of launch, but I don't think every retro style game has to be ported to it lol.
I'd much rather do a Sega-CD port and find the best ways to reduce the number of unique colors while keeping everything looking nice. It also suits the premise of the manga and PCE game, being real 16-bit hardware.

It'd also be cool to play as the Mega Drive character and swap out some of the backgrounds inspired by games/series which didn't appear on Genesis/Sega-CD with ones that did.

The first few stages so far are all based on series that appeared on Genesis.
That's a cool idea, and if nothing else would make for a good sequel.

Yeah I put the videos on Amazon when they started offering their program. They pay you. I got my first payment a few days ago. $1.11. Looking at mansions tomorrow.
I searched for some Gamesack videos on my Amazon Firestick, but it showed no results.
Only two I saw:

I'm going to give those a watch. If Joe gets that mansion maybe he'll let us come over and be in an episode of Playing With (ball)Sacks.
